Surrounded by violence, drugs, underfunded schools, lack of opportunities or dignifying jobs, the youth in these places see the street life as the only avenue to have money, wear designer, and be somebody important. When the Italians came here, they saw their parents working long hours to still stay in abject poverty under discrimination with no real way out thus why gang and mob life became so prevalent among them here. It all festers from lack of socioeconomic opportunities in a terrible cycle when these problems can be helped, if we wanted it, but there's no money in helping poor people when there's much more in building prisons and feeding the criminal justice system.
