Story of the song: 'Hurt', Johnny Cash (2002) "Hurt" - a song on Nine Inch Nails' 1994 release The Downward Spiral - came to the attention of the country legend Johnny Cash in 2002, through a mutual friend, the producer Rick Rubin
Tainted Love and Personal Jesus weren't really much different from their original versions aside from having a heavier guitar sound and harsher vocals. Manson's version of Sweet Dreams is completely different from the original version in pretty much every respect except for the lyrics.
I think the Eurythmics original was better. I almost never listen to the Manson Cover because I've never liked it. I don't care that it's different or similar for its own sake -- only whether the cover stands on it's own. Maybe I like PJ because the original was so damn good and MM added power to it.
Manson’s cover, even though some was changed, it was mostly slowed down and a metal rendition on some parts were done. It wasn’t completely stripped and redone like the songs they’re choosing here. It seems difficult to cover this particular song like that.
@@The_blindpizzaguy1300 What versions of these songs are you listening to? Dolly Parton in the original is quietly drowning in subtle pathos, her vibrato like a baby bird warbling "save yourself" as it sinks beneath the water in the pond behind the shed while Whitney's voice screams her martyrdom from the rollercoaster of her melisma, and you know she'll rise again just around the corner. Besides sounding nothing alike, and despite no change in lyrics, the two stories have opposite endings for the narrator, which is a testament to the skill of each performer, despite whether you like or don't like one or the other.
You missed Mad World by Gary Jules, originally by Tears for Fears. Also, there is Heartless by The Fray, originally by Kanye West. And don't forget about Marilyn Manson's cover of Eurythmic's Sweet Dreams.
that's good of you to know the original artists of said songs.....I always thought though that the Tears for Fears song was originally covered by Adam Lambert
Honestly I had never even heard that cover before you brought it up. I only knew The Fray's cover and personally I like it better. It had a more emotional impact to it.
+Karen Amster - the two versions don't sound ANYTHING alike. The beginnings are similar, but Dolly's is more subdued and has a sad but sweet resigned tone to it, while Whitney's version is more bombastic and triumphant. I guess the tempo is pretty much the same, though.
Funny how everyone commenting on it doesn't know the name of the song ("I will always love you"). Parton said she liked Houston's version of it, especially since as its' composer she raked in a ton of bucks, she said and then laughed. I remember the interview.
@@edwardkay288 It was a B-side track on her album "Crucify", therefore it still counts. They meant no covers that are just thrown in as part of a live show.
@Relle Wilson The Within Temptation version is a nice cover too indeed. But it's not that different sounding from the original past the instrumentation.

Fuck yes, both versions are unbelievably incredible. But this list is a list of covers that sound a lot different from the originals, and, while they do sound different, I can see why that song isn't on this list.
When I got to #2 I almost closed the video because I was absolutely sure that I Will Always Love You would be #1. I was incredibly surprised it didn't even make the list.
Mad World?? (Gary Jules, Tears for Fears) With a little help from my friends?? (Beatles, Joe Cocker) Layla?? (Clapton vs Clapton) I've got no strings on me??? (Pinocchio, Ultron)
Seriously. Clapton vs Clapton ought to've been a slam dunk for inclusion here, along with Norah Jones covering Cold, Cold Heart and basically every Willie Nelson cover Patsy Cline ever did, buuuuut millennials gonna millennial amirite. ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
Joe Cocker was the first thing that came to my mind from just seeing the title of this vid, i wouldve gone with "Feeling Alright" over walhfmf tho, its a cover and is much more different than the original, but either way, give him an honorable mention at least!
Chris Cornells acoustic version of "Nothing Compares to You" is phenomenal too. The amount of range and control he had in his voice is insane. Knowing I'll never get to see him live is a damn shame.
The Doors - Light My Fire. Cover by Jose Feliciano... as a cover sounding completely different to the original, it doesn’t get much better/different than that.
Especially when it was done as a duet w/the Incomparable "Minnie Ripperton"[...Maya Rudolf from SNL, mom] on her last album, prior to her succumbing to breast cancer in 1979!!!(...check it out?!! 😊)
Richard Cheese deserved at least honorable mention. The guy is all about covers packed with comical approach and he is awesome at it. Down With a Sickness was very brilliant cover.
And also Weird Al Yankovic's Polka cover medleys of various songs. The extract of Pink's 'Rock Star' never fails to make me giggle - "I'm alriiight, I'm just fiiiiine, and you're a toooooo-oooooool!"
Lindsay Federico I automatically think of Proud Mary when people discuss cover songs, they took an already awesome song and did a blow away take on it.
Even though I still prefer the original, that is an exceptionally good point. the Turners, er, turned that one on its ear with the triple-time tempo on what was a laidback track.
lol I had a roommate that tried to tell me Tina Turner was the original. In my head I pictured the scene from South Park where Terrence(or Phillip) just smacked Brooke Shields for saying something stupid.
Pretty sure what they meant was covers that were actually sold and recorded in a studio instead of just being played randomly as some bands do every now and then.
They didnt say "Only studio versions", they said they weren't taking into consideration songs that have only been performed live, but ones with studio versions to back it up.
Why not: Sweet Dreams - Cover: Marilyn Manson, Original: Eurythmics Sound of Silence - Cover: Disturbed, Original: Simon and Garfunkel Stone Cold Crazy - Cover: Metallica, Original: Queen Imagine - Cover: A Perfect Circle, Original: John Lennon The Dark - Cover: Stone Sour, Original: Metal Church The Wall - Cover, Korn, Original: Pink Floyd *You Give Love A Bad Name - Cover: Atreyu, Original: Bon Jovi Word Up - Cover: Korn, Original: Cameo Blue Monday - Cover: Orgy, Original: New Order I Love Rock and Roll - Cover: Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Original: The Arrows Or ANYTHING from Richard Cheese?

And goddamnit Richard Cheese. I can't even think of Chop Suey differently anymore.
This one and Joe Cocker's version of the Beatles song "With a Little Help from My Friends" are two of the first 3 songs I thought of, the other one is on the list. Johnny Cash's version of Hurt
David Cook performed Chris Cornell's version of "Billie Jean" on Season 7 of "American Idol", of which he was declared the winner. It has since been regarded as one of the best performances in "Idol" history. RIP Chris Cornell

I really can't believe you left out Mad World. The original Tears for Fears version is so much different to the Gary Jules cover. not even an honourable mention. Come on, Watch Mojo, get your heads out of your collective asses.
Completely agree, some of these are pretty much the same genre, they may as well have included Disturbed's version of Shout or Sound of Silence or Nirvana's Meat Puppets covers for some of the choices made.
@@MrCopenhagen113 look at the art not the man. If that is your criteria you will never apreciate any art. Still trying to educate my wife to this after 35 years
What part pisses you off? The 'gifting' of ownership of the song to Cash? Or that they never mentioned how much more powerful Cash's version was? I love both versions, but The Man In Black did it better in my opinion.
Most of these are songs converted to the covering band's sound for the sake of it. This can sound great, but when the change in music style also changes the interpretation of the song, that's when a cover becomes transcendant for me. Playing and singing Hurt as an old man full of regrets and about to die is incredibly powerful, for example. For this reason, I feel like A Perfect Circle's version of John Lennon's Imagine is missing from the list. The original is hopeful, wishful, naive even.. While the cover is desperately pleeding, and so much more relevant for it's time, and even now.
Hate/loathe/detest the original version of Imagine ever since first hearing it. Then when hearing / watching PCs version, was almost enough for me to fall in love with it. Lyrics and video were near perfect match.
@@almostyummymummy I don't mind the original so much, but I always thought it was too much of a stoned hippy peace trip for the message to have any real impact. Met Johnny Cash not long after his wife passed away i was surprised he even was willing to put out another album and when he covered Hurt it just felt like it was a tribute to June.
I think so. He said many times that she saved his life; he was an addict and felt he wasn't worth saving when they met. He always felt bad about what he put her through in the beginning.
Great, but not better than the original (or the 1982 redo Dolly did for the Best Little Whorehouse in Texas movie...which I think was better than her original).
Also, which version, Whitney Houston's enduring well known and widely affecting classic, or Josh Weathers' recent astonishing turn. Whichever, good call.
Mad World was not that great of a song for Tears for Fears. Now, if the list was "Remade song Better Than the Original?" Yeah, it would be close to the top if not No. 1.

In addition to "Mad World," mentioned by many, here are a few deserving entries: "The Ghost of Tom Joad": Bruce Springsteen's folk song is re-imagined as an angry Rage Against the Machine anthem. "In the Street": Big Star's wistful jangle-pop masterpiece is turned into a head-banging TV theme - twice (the second time by Cheap Trick). "Comfortably Numb": Jazzy space rock turned into disco (and do I really need to say who did each version)? "Black Steel": Public Enemy's gangsta rap is turned into a cool groove by Tricky. "Oops I Did It Again": Max Martin's hit for Britney Spears is given a straight-forward acoustic treatment by the legendary Richard Thompson, who claims it as the last best song of its millennium. You could also do a list of cover albums (1989, The Who Sell Out, Tusk), of surprisingly faithful covers ("Live and Let Die," "Easy"), or of songs rescued from obscurity by covers ("Superman," "Louie Louie").
Actually it shouldn't be on the list at all, as the lyrics were changed which also changed the whole theme of the song (from heroin-hell to chistianity (crown of shit > crown of thorns)) Johnny's Hurt is great, but I can't count it as true cover version of NINs even better Hurt.

@@luciennebouvier1006 you're telling me Disturbed's cover, dark, menacing, instrumentally different and in a different key altogether sounds the same as the original? Where the original is in a higher key, the vocals are light and airy, and instrumentally is a folky, guitar driven sound? Righto...
I remember when I found out that Jimi Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower" WAS NOT an original, but a Bob Dylan cover! It should have been #1!
It was so good, Dylan changed the way he performed it.
Meh. You can fill a stadium with Dylan covers.
After hearing the Johnny Cash cover of Hurt, Trent Reznor said the song now belonged to Johnny. That is was no longer his.
Story of the song: 'Hurt', Johnny Cash (2002) "Hurt" - a song on Nine Inch Nails' 1994 release The Downward Spiral - came to the attention of the country legend Johnny Cash in 2002, through a mutual friend, the producer Rick Rubin
Mad World by Tears for Fears (1982) covered by Gary Jules and Michael Andrews (2001)... not even a mention?
I still prefer the NIN nails version.🤷♀️
Much as I like NIN, I agree with Trent. The man in black owns the song. Much like Joplin owns Kristofferson's "Bobby McG ee
Johnny’s version was great, mostly because of his unique and very distinguished voice
You know when he’s on the radio
How the hell was Marilyn Manson's cover of Sweet Dreams Are Made of This (originally by The Eurythmics) not included?
N N : Or tainted love !
I really think Personal Jesus was the best Manson cover.
“Help!” Beatles to Tina Turner.
“Proud Mary” CCR to Ike & Tina Turner.
“Help” the Beatles to John Farnham
Help by Dolly Parton
My only question is how the hell do you leave out Whitney Houston's cover of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You
Because they do sound similar. This is about same lyrics, totally different music.
1mezion because it is almost an exact imitation. It’s even in the same key. And this list is songs that sound different from the original.
You're so right and it should have been number one!!!!
Adam Lambert did do a cover of Mad World for American Idol, but that was in 2009. Gary Jules did his cover back in 2001 for the movie Donnie Darko.
Honestly I had never even heard that cover before you brought it up. I only knew The Fray's cover and personally I like it better. It had a more emotional impact to it.
StatRM Or even Valerie covered by Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse.
Manson's cover of Golden Years by Bowie is pretty amazing too. Not a fan of Manson but his covers are usually stellar.
Where's Whitney Houston's cover of Dolly Parton's hit!!
WatchMojo: ever wonder what it would be like if a bluegrass band covered Snoop Dogg?
Me: No
Them: look no further!
WatchMojo: We are not including live versions...
Also WatchMojo: At #9, Tori Amos covering "Smells Like Teen Spirit" in concert!
It was awesome tho you gotta admit!
@@tonipope3164 it was good. awesome is kobain covering the man who sold the world.
@@edwardkay288 It was a B-side track on her album "Crucify", therefore it still counts. They meant no covers that are just thrown in as part of a live show.
Running up that Hill - Kate Bush as covered by Placebo
Thorsten Steinmann one of my favorite covers - I actually prefer Placebo's version. ☺
Couldn't agree more. Easily one of the greatest cover songs ever.
Thorsten Steinmann Sharon den Adel covered it better
@Relle Wilson The Within Temptation version is a nice cover too indeed. But it's not that different sounding from the original past the instrumentation.
Yes
R.I.P Chris Cornelll
R.I.P Chester Bennington
Sydni Richards yeah cause they were both great singers? Eh not? Honestly once a drug addict always a drug addict..
C. McFluffington Even though i find you a bit rude, you are right. You should walk in their shoes before you open up your mouth. You don't know how it feels till it happens to you.
Aleyna Çiftçi Yes. What I said was very rude..but very true. I'd rather be 'a bit rude' than even the littlest bit of heartless...And thank you 😉 I sincerely mean that. You absolutely got what I was trying to say.
C. McFluffington well I live on my own with my husky dog and since being a former addict myself I learned that all addicts are idiots.. Oh and my "fat mother" is dead.. You couldn't have gotten that any more wrong even if you tried... Well done
Whitney Houston's hit song and cover of I will always love you originally by Dolly parton
Fuck yes, both versions are unbelievably incredible. But this list is a list of covers that sound a lot different from the originals, and, while they do sound different, I can see why that song isn't on this list.
+Amanda Falcone I fel like it shouldve been at least on the honorables list though lol
When I got to #2 I almost closed the video because I was absolutely sure that I Will Always Love You would be #1. I was incredibly surprised it didn't even make the list.
Very similar to original.
Dylan: "I have written a decent song"
Hendrix: "hold my smoke"
Mad World?? (Gary Jules, Tears for Fears)
With a little help from my friends?? (Beatles, Joe Cocker)
Layla?? (Clapton vs Clapton)
I've got no strings on me??? (Pinocchio, Ultron)
Seriously. Clapton vs Clapton ought to've been a slam dunk for inclusion here, along with Norah Jones covering Cold, Cold Heart and basically every Willie Nelson cover Patsy Cline ever did, buuuuut millennials gonna millennial amirite. ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
Fuck yes, Joe Cocker. Probably tied for my favorite cover ever. He tore that shit UP at Woodstock. 🙌🏽🙌🏽
Mad World came to my mind as well. Also "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," Judy Garland vs Iz.
And Sweet Dreams, Eurythmics -> Sucker Punch or Marilyn Manson or Mumford & Sons
Joe Cocker was the first thing that came to my mind from just seeing the title of this vid, i wouldve gone with "Feeling Alright" over walhfmf tho, its a cover and is much more different than the original, but either way, give him an honorable mention at least!
R.I.P. Chris Cornell
R.I.P. Jimi Hendrix
R.I.P. Johnny Cash
RIP Kurt Cobain
R.I.P. Prince
R.I.P Chester Bennington
Chester 😭😭😭😭
ok
Chris Cornells acoustic version of "Nothing Compares to You" is phenomenal too. The amount of range and control he had in his voice is insane. Knowing I'll never get to see him live is a damn shame.
I think this is published way before than the Nothing Compares 2 U by CC but im hoping too that they will include it next time
Mad Word originally by Tears for Fears, covered by Gary Jules in Donnie Darko.
Seriously, the fact that that didn't at LEAST make honorable mentions is amazing. Maybe they need to do another list of these.
Steven Wasserman This... I... I... One of the best covers ever made and not on the list. stunned.
i dont know... for me they dont sound very different, both create a very similar atmosphere when I hear them
Johnny Cash's hurt is fucking stunning...
His Rusty Cage is as well
a very powerful song in its own right
Misty Stewart TBH I like it better than the original
Nine inch nails came out and basically said its his song, he absolutely crushed it.
He never did heroin but they way he sings _needle tears a hole_ you would think he experienced that.
Surprised they went for "Billie Jean" as opposed to Alien Ant Farm's cover of "Smooth Criminal", in terms of Michael Jackson covers.
Or FOBs version of Beat It
So was I, I'm glad it's not as it just felt like they were riding the gravy train instead of actually doing anything with it.
I was too at first but AAF's version doesn't really sound all that different tone-wise, than the original.
AAF's "Smooth Criminal" is amazing!
Samuel B to each their own. I still prefer Jackson's, because I'm a sucker for originals, but I think AAF did it justice.
The Doors - Light My Fire.
Cover by Jose Feliciano... as a cover sounding completely different to the original, it doesn’t get much better/different than that.
I'll check that out x
Especially when it was done as a duet w/the Incomparable "Minnie Ripperton"[...Maya Rudolf from SNL, mom] on her last album, prior to her succumbing to breast cancer in 1979!!!(...check it out?!! 😊)
Al Green also did a cover of Light My Fire on his album, Al Green Gets Next To You.
Dude, Smooth Criminal by Alien Ant Farm!
Lol ants more tbh
i was saying that the whole video
The video is for remakes that sound DIFFERENT. Smooth Criminal is exactly the same just with electric guitars lol.
For real
+Muli Elo um......what?😂
Soft Cell's cover of Tainted Love didn't even get an honorable mention? What?! Are you kidding me?
Very surprised that alien ant farm smooth criminal cover is not on here
it's pretty different. i'd say some of these are as much the same as that one.
I literally clicked on this video only to see this mentioned!
I know right
Yeah, man! AAF's version is so awesome! I bet MJ himself loved it.
right... that would have been a good one for this list
I'm partial to Richard Cheese's lounge cover of "Gin and Juice". Lol
I also like richard cheses smells like teen spirit
Richard Cheese deserved at least honorable mention. The guy is all about covers packed with comical approach and he is awesome at it. Down With a Sickness was very brilliant cover.
And it totally made one of the remade Dawn of the Dead's best scenes.
And also Weird Al Yankovic's Polka cover medleys of various songs. The extract of Pink's 'Rock Star' never fails to make me giggle - "I'm alriiight, I'm just fiiiiine, and you're a toooooo-oooooool!"
Karlis Liepa Yes! It was perfection.
Maerahn anything weird al did was amazing 😭 my favorite is the sage begins
saga begins*
Um, you didn't even mention that Proud Mary by Tina and Ike Turner was a cover song originally sung by Creedence Clearwater Revival.
That's one song that I love both versions. They each have something so catchy, in different ways.
@Christopher Bingham You want to. It is very very good!!!! Not saying better than the original, but equally awesome in a very different way.
Gary Jules' cover of Mad World.
I like it better than the original
+heydavewhite As do i
I think almost everyone does. Without taking anything away from the original
Yes. His version evokes more feelings than the original.
Can't beat Roland Orzabal's dancing in the original ;)
Disturbed's covers of "Shout", "Land of Confusion", "Zombie" and "The Sound of Silence"
"Only studio versions" proceeds to show live versions of almost every song on the list
I was thinking the same thing. WM is full of shit.
wolfhawk1999 That's because those versions have no videos hence they weren't singles
Pretty sure what they meant was covers that were actually sold and recorded in a studio instead of just being played randomly as some bands do every now and then.
They didnt say "Only studio versions", they said they weren't taking into consideration songs that have only been performed live, but ones with studio versions to back it up.
Right? ¬¬ Watch Mojo always creates dumb rules just to as dumbly break them immediately after
Why not:
Sweet Dreams - Cover: Marilyn Manson, Original: Eurythmics
Sound of Silence - Cover: Disturbed, Original: Simon and Garfunkel
Stone Cold Crazy - Cover: Metallica, Original: Queen
Imagine - Cover: A Perfect Circle, Original: John Lennon
The Dark - Cover: Stone Sour, Original: Metal Church
The Wall - Cover, Korn, Original: Pink Floyd
*You Give Love A Bad Name - Cover: Atreyu, Original: Bon Jovi
Word Up - Cover: Korn, Original: Cameo
Blue Monday - Cover: Orgy, Original: New Order
I Love Rock and Roll - Cover: Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Original: The Arrows
Or ANYTHING from Richard Cheese?
or No Diggity cover by Chet Faker, originally be blackstreet
I agree with the majority of your list, and was looking for a few of these myself. I Prevail's "Blank Space" cover of Taylor Swift was phenomenal; Issue's "Boyfriend" cover of Justin Bieber was great; Halestorm's "Bad Romance" cover of Lady Gaga, Manson's "Tainted Love" cover of Gloria Jones... And goddamnit Richard Cheese. I can't even think of Chop Suey differently anymore.
+funky skunk Oh my gosh! Yes!
tainted love as well
SuburbanAxMan Wait a minute . . . That was a cover?!
Tainted love, originally by Gloria Jones and covered by both Soft Cell and Marilyn Manson
Yes Soft Cell's has to be one of the best covers of all time!
Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt" moved me to tears the first time I saw the music video.
Uh, Gary Jules version of Mad World?
yeah would have prefered that over Style cuz that sounded the same
My second cousin is Gary Jules and my favorite band of all time is Tears for Fears lol
This one and Joe Cocker's version of the Beatles song "With a Little Help from My Friends" are two of the first 3 songs I thought of, the other one is on the list. Johnny Cash's version of Hurt
and its not even in the honorable mentions... like wtf?
alien ant farm's version of Michael Jackson's smooth criminal should be on this list.
Sweet Dreams- Marilyn Manson?
+Vince Cooper and Marisa Wolff outside of Manson's super dark
undertone and death screams, they sound similar. Probably should have been on the list.
It was covered by the band called Dope not Marilyn Manson. Some people do get it wrong.
Pero Gol What are you talking about ?manson made a cover of Sweet Dreams by The Eurythmics that souns nothing like the original, everybody knows that!
Vince Cooper and Marisa Wolff no he wrote a line that gives it a more sinister tone.
Vince Cooper and Marisa Wolff yes man manson covered you spin me round
Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" covered by Guns N' Roses, should be number one.
I actually prefer Guns N Roses version, they did a pretty good job to me
Yeah, if they just cut out that strange phone call thing that plays in the middle of it, it would be even better.
Guns 'n Roses also did a great version of "live and let die"
+Rick de Vroede and Rolling Stones' Simpathy for the Devil
also the RAIGN version as well, its a really good cover in my opinion
David Cook performed Chris Cornell's version of "Billie Jean" on Season 7 of "American Idol", of which he was declared the winner. It has since been regarded as one of the best performances in "Idol" history.
RIP Chris Cornell
Joe Cocker's With a little help from my friends
That's one I expected to be on the list. Not so easy to take a Beatles song and improve it.
fatbelly27 It was a good cover but not an improvement in the slightest, the original song was fine.
agreed i loved the improvement , not a fan of the original
IT'S NOT AN IMPROVEMENT. Fuck sake.
Media Haven it most certainly is!
Sinead O'Connor did not originally write "nothing compares to you". It was originally written by Prince. Fyi
Chris Cornell's cover is still my favorite. He was amazing!
Thank you! I was PISSED when I seen that. She did a great job on it which is why prince gave her the rights to the song. BUT no she didn't originally write or preform or record the song.
Yes we know.
He may have wrote it but he never recorded it the original version was by 'The Family' in 1985
Yeah, no one said she did write it? It says a version was done BEFORE she released hers, so unless she was a time lord...
where's Smooth Criminal by Alien Ant Farm & Michael Jackson at?😢
Billion covers they chose ten
That came to mind, but they still sound fairly similar.
+
+Iliketurtles Ronning they did ask for other suggestions on the conments.
I was totally bummed that they didn't include this song, it is one of my favorite covers.
"The Sound of Silence" - Disturbed
With a Little Help from My Friends, Joe Cocker (orig. by The Beatles).
Good catch!!
What about Cocker's cover of "The Letter"?
Indeed, in fact, Cocker changed the time signature from 4/4 to 3/4...this should have been NO.1
I was going to say that, too. I don't understand why it's not on this list.
I really can't believe you left out Mad World. The original Tears for Fears version is so much different to the Gary Jules cover. not even an honourable mention. Come on, Watch Mojo, get your heads out of your collective asses.
Yeah I was expecting it too
me to was expecting it
Completely agree, some of these are pretty much the same genre, they may as well have included Disturbed's version of Shout or Sound of Silence or Nirvana's Meat Puppets covers for some of the choices made.
yeah i was waiting for mad world
+Aaron Dunn or even any Richard Cheese covers like his of Down with the Sickness or Oasis's Wonderwall.
You should of just put every punk goes pop song ever
That's what I was thinking
truthfully
I was also thinking this!
I came here just to see some punk goes pop songs
ikr
Behind Blue Eyes - Limp Bizkit
Cats in the Cradle - Ugly Kid Joe
Smooth Criminal - Alien Ant Farm
Does Limp Bizkit have a version of Behind Blue eyes they don't ruin by throwing an ad for themselves in. I was enjoying it until they did that.
Loved that smooth criminal cover
Crossroads - Robert Johnson - covered by Everyone. There are a lot of
covers of this one.
Alien Ant Farms cover is better than the original! And not done by a child molester. So you know its got that going for it
@@MrCopenhagen113 look at the art not the man. If that is your criteria you will never apreciate any art. Still trying to educate my wife to this after 35 years
Hurt should have been #1.
The Rageaholic that’s what I thought
They also never mentioned how Trent Reznor loved Cash's cover so much he said it was no longer his song, and now belonged to Cash basically.
Matt Chateauvert that really pisses me off
But they sound similar....
What part pisses you off? The 'gifting' of ownership of the song to Cash? Or that they never mentioned how much more powerful Cash's version was? I love both versions, but The Man In Black did it better in my opinion.
Where's Marilyn Manson ?!
Which song because the Eurhythmics had Sweet Dreams first.
Prob every cover he has ever done ;d
there is absolutely nothing different in Manson covers, it's a verbatim cover with a heavier chord. Nothing different.
DrumDummy YES WITH SWEEY DREAMS!!!
Probably on food stamps by now.
No muse- feeling good? That's an amazing cover
Both the original by Nina Simone and the cover by Muse are great songs! The Muse cover actually made me seek out the original.
hawk622 right? I love both versions i suggested the muse cover because it is vastly different from the original but both covers are amazing
or the house of the rising Sun?
yeahh!! there is someone who felt the same! how is it that Feeling good wasn't there...
+gwolf2004 The problem with House is that the Animals cover is the definitive version, and very few people know who wrote it.
“You Keep Me Hanging On” by Kim Wilde, originally by The Supremes
Great cover indeed!
Nirvana's Beautifully and parrillada rendition of "Lake of Fire" by The Meat Puppets definitely deserves a spot
JJ Anthony López-Russell and plateau
and Oh Me
JJ Anthony López-Russell Yeah, but they're not studio recordings
Then neither is Cornell's because Billie Jean came from Unplugged in Sweden
I will survive by cake originally by Gloria gaynor
Hurt definitely should have been first. Love Blinded by the Light but it doesn't have remotely the same impact.
Johnny Cash's "Hurt" should be #1. Hands down.
Wire Mother Johnny Cashs version is far better than Nine Inch Nails
APC took that out and filled the space with desperation to the point of nearly giving up, and as a result the impact of their version is like a punch in the gut for me.
Where's Marilyn manson sweet dreams
Marilyn Manson did do a cover for Sweet Dreams....the Eurhythmics had it first....not a lot of people know that...just like Mad World...I think it was done by Tears For Fears before Adam Lambert....
Lunideth those versions sound too similar
TwentyØneFallOutMansonCrybabies That's the best...
Mr. Fancypants I prefer Personal jesus and tainted love but it's still an amazing song
TwentyØneFallOutMansonCrybabies I luv your name
Disturbed - Sound of Silence
I was just thinking this.
Thanks for clueing me into this. I had never heard of Disturbed. I went staraight to him and listened to his version of Simon and Garfield's song. I was alive when they first published it, and had that album. I really like Disturbed version. He has an incredible voice. I am going to listen to more of his own songs.
But they kind off kept the original style, not turning it into their's. I guess xD Sorry, music's not really my forte ;)
But it didn`t changed much from the original!
or Land Of Confusion (though I prefer the original by Genesis)
I think that "Come on Eileen" By save Ferris, originally by Dexys midnight runners hold be on the list.
I can't believe you missed the Talking Heads cover of Take Me to the River
Halsey's "I walk the line" should definitely be on her
Love that!
Wait that's a cover????
i was searching for someone to say this!!
Very yes. Sad that wasn't on here.
yes
RIP CHRIS CORNELL
YOU WERE A LEGEND
I'd love to see them do a Top 10 covers by Chris. He was an amazing talent. RIP
He may be gone, but he remains a legend.
Tori Amos covers Smells Like Teen Spirit.
Still no one can understand the lyrics.
They're not really meant to be understood. At one point he says: "An albino, a mosquito, (something blah)." Its like Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin, the lyrics make no sense whatsoever but its a really compelling song.
yeah that. thanks!
1) Ya got me floatin Hendrix to PM Dawn
2) Superstar Carpenters to Sonic Youth ( yes I know it was written by Leon Russell )
3) Big River Johnny Cash to Beat Farmers
4) Ain’t no love in the heart of the city Bobby “Blue” Bland to Whitesnake
5) I wanna be your Dog The Stooges to Joan Jett
6) Heroes David Bowie to Motörhead
7) Back in the USSR Beatles to Leningrad Cowboys
8) Come Together Beatles to Aerosmith
9) Just like Tom Thumb’s Blues Dylan to Bryan Ferry ( without a doubt THE Suavest Man in rock n roll!)
10) I can’t get no (satisfaction) Rolling Stones to Otis Redding ( YES!, I know it’s a live recording, but that MAN!, singin THAT! Song, on that stage with Booker T & The MG’s is without a doubt the BEST cover of that song!)
Honorable mention: You’re No Good Betty Everett to Linda Ronstadt ( The original’s obscure but Linda did make it her own!!!)
Not even an honorable mention for Joe Cockers version of "with a little help from my friends"?
Yes definitely!
I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt cheated with this list. I thought for sure Cocker's cover would have made it to the top.
Riiiiiiight!? Probably the only Beatles cover to outdo the original (and I dig the original no end)! This is downright egregious, is what this is.
The first song I said when I saw this video.
I thought for sure I Will Always Love You would be on here.
it definitely should be
That fits better on a "Covers that are better than the original songs" list.
It doesn't really sound as different as some of these do--definitely more similar than any of the ones I suggested.
Great, but not better than the original (or the 1982 redo Dolly did for the Best Little Whorehouse in Texas movie...which I think was better than her original).
Also, which version, Whitney Houston's enduring well known and widely affecting classic, or Josh Weathers' recent astonishing turn. Whichever, good call.
bizarre love triangle should be on that list
Mad World by Gary Jules originally by Tears for Fears
Sound of Silence by Disturbed originally by Simon and Garfunkel
When you see "Everybody wants to rule the world" And you so think its gonna be Ninja Sex Party
But instead you get more Hunger Games ._.
Kingster 14 I wish NSP was on here, they did that cover song justice
But theirs was pretty similar.
You could've done anything from their _Under the Covers_ album (Apparently there's a second one coming out later this month and I'm way excited)
NSP was better than Lorde's. They used to be the top result when googling the song
Gary Jules - Mad World, originally released by Tears for Fears?
good one
How was it not number one
Mad World was not that great of a song for Tears for Fears. Now, if the list was "Remade song Better Than the Original?" Yeah, it would be close to the top if not No. 1.
+The Leap I like the original more than Gary Jules version. sounds better to me being upbeat
+petervanwinkles Same, I am a fan of Tears for Fears.
Here are a few honourable mentions:
I Will Always Love You -- Whitney Houston (originally by Dolly Parton)
Zombie -- Bad Wolves (originally by the Cranberries)
Live And Let Die -- Guns 'N Roses (originally by Paul McCartney and Wings)
Tears In Heaven -- K-Ci Hailey (originally by Eric Clapton)
I Saw Him Standing There -- Tiffany (originally I Saw Her Standing There by the Beatles)
To Love Somebody -- Michael Bolton (originally by the Bee Gees)
Landslide -- Dixie Chicks (originally by Fleetwood Mac)
Reason To Believe -- Wilson Phillips (originally by Rod Stewart)
Have I Told You Lately -- Rod Stewart (originally by Van Morrison)
Many of those covers you listed are not versions that sound considerably different than the originals.
I have to admit, I don’t want to hear another version of Zombie. Delores O Riordan had a unique go all approach to that song.
@@craighenry2351 Yes she did!
Cake's cover of I Will Survive.
Lukas Lawler yes so much yes
Sorry, but the WORST COVER EVER!!!! It used to play where I worked and I would constantly see people stop shopping, look up and make a face like, "What the everloving FUCK is that?!" I agreed with them.
MissNovemberTuesday dude shut up that cover is far superior to some of these covers on this list
Worst...Cake...Song...Ever!
Cake is for morons. Any idiot can do a deliberately awful version of something.
I'd love a Top 10 RUclipsrs Cover Songs.
There are a lot of famous RUclips artists out there and most of them got famous by covering mainstream songs.
Like Natewantstobattle. He's amazing. He recently did an incredible cover of Fire by PVRIS. It's a great song, and he's got a great voice. He has also made some original songs about FNaF and Undertale, along with Pokémon and LoZ. I encourage everyone to check him out.
Impala 67 I haven't listened to music like that in a decade. Fire - PVRIS is a good cover for that style, but I'm not into that style anymore. I liked his Irish/Celtic LoZ cover. The 7 Deadly Sins cover totally fits this guy's style (added to a playlist). :)
Smooth McGrove is the best video game cover song person I've ever heard, and I sub to a TON of them. If you want me to share some more let me know. :)
+Chaz Evansdale I am subscribed to Smooth McGroove, and I'd love it if you recommended me more. I enjoy listening to music of any kind☺
Impala 67 My favorite music RUclipsr is Dodie Clark (Channel: doddleoddle). Reason: Because she's real. If you knew Christina Grimmie, think that kinda real. She hasn't been changed by having 500k+ subs.
Next is kylelandry. He's an amazing piano player, game/anime music, lots of imrpov playing based on songs.
I don't want to overload you with too many too fast. If you want me to go a certain direction (more piano, more acoustic guitar, more harmonies, more game music, more pop covers) let me know. :)
Feel free to suggest some for me too. I love music! :)
They've already done that video. I believe it is a Top X video. Walk Off the Earth's cover of Gotye made the top...
TBH I clicked on this video only to see if "Hurt" was on it
Just like me XD
I was hoping they'd pick I Hung My Head (Sting) or Rusty Cage (Soundgarden) from the same series....
I was hoping that the Kermit the frog version would have been chosen.
"Hurt" and "Rusty Cage" would have both been great.
How can one not like Cash, NIN and Soundgarden?
I fully agree with that.
The Bangles cover of Simon and Garfunkel ‘s “Hazy shade of winter”
Courtney McCarroll pretty good
Courtney McCarroll its pretty cool but i still like the sodom version better
the KĪCK AЯSE AussĪe 3.0 I haven’t heard this version... I’ll check it out.
And Gerard Way's cover of Hazy Shade of winter feat. Ray Toro
Caitie Ross III I will check this out, as well! Thanks for the info.
You forgot the most drastic cover change ever. The Cardigans version of Black Sabbath's Iron Man.
I was hoping to see that make the list too. But I didn't think it would... probably only you, me, and the Cardigans remember that one.
+Jason Curtis I think you right about that one, lol and I'm pretty sure The Cardigans wish we would forget it!
There was an electronic cover of Paranoid. I can't remember the artist for the life of me but it was pretty crazy too but also a lot more shit than The Cardigans Iron Man
I loved The Cardigans' version of Iron Man. They also did a cover of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath that was pretty cool, too.
Cake also does a very unique version of War Pigs
why the fuck not distubed sound of silence cover of simon and garfunkle?
Not a bad suggestion, it's a great cover, but not exactly "Way Different" from the original.
blardaboopwehbamoop because it's terrible
your taste in music is terrible
disturbed's version is more powerful, but they didn't change the song structure, or alter the music very much.
That would have been an excellent addition.
my number one: BLACK MAGIC WOMAN, originally fleetwood mac, successful by santana
Originally and successful by Santana. Fleetwood's cover didn't come until 5 years after Santana released Black Magic Woman in 1970.
Wrong! Peter Green wrote the song and released it in 1968. Santana's cover came out two years later.
Wrong.
yep - early (peter green era) fleetwood mac sounds a lot like rolling stones
In addition to "Mad World," mentioned by many, here are a few deserving entries:
"The Ghost of Tom Joad": Bruce Springsteen's folk song is re-imagined as an angry Rage Against the Machine anthem.
"Hurt" should have been #1.
Agreed! Both the original NIN version and Cash's version are amazing. I even love the version of Reznor on the piano singing Cash's version.
Not really different than the original
Actually it shouldn't be on the list at all, as the lyrics were changed which also changed the whole theme of the song (from heroin-hell to chistianity (crown of shit > crown of thorns))
Johnny's Hurt is great, but I can't count it as true cover version of NINs even better Hurt.
Totally agree!
Just because a lyric or two is changed, doesn't prevent it from being a cover version.
