    So many memories of my youth. I remember the quest for power in my model aircraft circa 1970, we didn't have winders but used hand cranked drills to turn the props. Soon we were adding JATO and teeny .010 motors to our model craft. Surgical tubing was the Tesla of that summer, BTW. What an outstanding video, thanks for the memories 😊

    I flew a control line .049 Cox PT-19 this way by looping the line around a support post in the basement. Never thought of flying rubber powered models this way. Great way to fly scale rubber powered models without destroying them. Love it!

      @@themadscientest you can run a cox motor anywhere there is atmosphere containing oxygen. indoors, outdoors, inside another plane, inside a submarine, on the top of a mountain, in a cave (i don't know if this is indoors or outdoors). just be sure you have fuel and a battery to start.

    I like the idea. Now, scale it up. Back in the late 70's I was flying C/L. To break in motors I built a Flat wing 36In WS Tethered plane. For C/L engines, there is no throttle, set the needle, release and fly. I have used the rig for my .46 BB engines set at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle. Five minutes of run time to warm the engine completely, then cool the air temperature. Do this 5 times and the engine is run-in nicely.

    Thanks for the "floppy rubber" tip. I can now get a longer stable powered flight rather than a brief burst then glide!
    I did some tests and found that with the same length band the energy stored is about the same, but the fewer loops you use, resulting in a floppier the band, the lower the power but the longer the duration.

    You can learn SO much from building and flying rubber powered models! Start with a simple design, such as a One Night 16 (excellent flyer, easy to build and cover) or similar type. Then maybe a scale model of a high wing aircraft like a Piper Cub or a Taylorcraft. Do some research. Learning really is fun, with model aviation! Get ready for some very long flights!

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC 6 лет назад

      guess and check :) If it flies UP, then the wing will need to move back, if it flies down, move the wing forward. This will change the Center of Gravity (CG aka COG) to change the plane from nose heavy to tail heavy, and hopefully "balanced"

    • @kwacked1
      @kwacked1 6 лет назад

      Use the stock rubber motor first and don’t put a full winding into it. Oh, and try it outside, no wind, and untethered. This lets you play with the wing position in a way that should not destroy the plane while you experiment. Just remember that the plane climbs when the motor has a full wind, and descends when the prop is slowing down,
