- It might be the international break but there is still plenty to discuss on The Football Fill-In! Ben Foster is joined by Darren Bent and Danny Thomas to discuss the problems England need to address ahead of Euro 2024, following the Three Lions’ 1-0 defeat to Brazil on Saturday.
There are still big questions marks over three positions in the England starting XI and the lads also talk through the players that have an outside chance of being on the plane…

He chose to play for England because he wanted a chance to be closer to losing a trophy than Canada.
The one constant with England win, draw or loss is that we play with shackles on, little style, tentative, slow and afraid to take chances. It does not bode well as Southgate is too cautious and blinks in key situations.

Trent is so pivotal to this team if we want to win something. Often need those individuals in international football. Plus he would allow Declan Rice to be Declan Rice and drive forward, let Trent pick the ball up deep.

Isn’t it obvious after the Brazil game that Trent (in any position) is absolutely vital. How can you argue that we should play our best players and ‘take the handbrake off’ but not start Trent? Be it RB or DM, he HAS to play.

Mainoo has to start in the Euros. I'm spanish, and we have a similar case with Cubarsí who has played around 20 games with Barcelona but has been fantastic and is only 17! I think you always have to trust those players because they are your present and most important, they are your future for the next 15 years!!!

How can you expect someone to get experience as CB for England when Southgate's spent the best part of 8 years blindly picking Maguire regardless of form or fitness?
If Southgate peaked at other leagues he'd realize that Fikayo Tomori is one the best centerbacks England can pick. On his scudetto winning season for Milan he was the defender of the Tournement and yet didn't even get the call ups, just because he plays in Italy (a league rather well known for its quality in defense).
He's tremendous at backward defending which is what you'll need in an English side that wants to dominate the ball more and play a higher line. Unfortunately, he gets snubbed in favor of players in mediocre Premier league teams... It's is such a shame.

I think it's more likely Liverpool will drop points here and there than Arsenal. The City vs Arsenal game will definatelly detirmine who's the favorite going forward imo
Hopefully Bentie gets it spot on and Arsenal win the League, as a Man United fan I really don't want City to beat our record of 3 in a row, and I certainly don't want Liverpool equaling our record of 20 titles. Arsenal is the lesser of 3 evils.

Bent is always a great addition, that new guy is dull as dishwater though, detracted from the chemistry. If Mark isn't on, make sure Watto is on the sofa. Fozzy working overtime to keep the vibe, he's getting much better at presenting.

Maguire not good enough against pace or high line, Shaw if fit is better than Chilwell, Gallagher doesn't fit into this role and Trent starts ahead Jones and Mainoo also better than Gallagher. Rashford depends on how he ends the season.

I think the biggest problem is that international football just doesn't hold the prestige it should. Players are far more focused and committed to their club sides; the fact that Saka and White withdrew says exactly that as they are prioritising their fitness for the upcoming clash against City and for the remainder of title race. I understand it is a friendly, which will obviously skew the players mindset and commitment more than when a tournament comes around, but that should equally be a/ *the* perfect opportunity for this England team to let the shackles go and play with enjoyment and freedom (as Jude exudes perfectly). The sort of mindset we have seen in both friendlies lie with Southgate's approach, which has to be questioned again now.

I find it mind blowing that nobody is questioning Jordan Pickford's starting place in this team. He gave away the first goal with a shocking mistake and failed to prevent the second because he's too short to cut out a cross In his own 6-yard box.
Crazy that they all wrote off United getting even 5th. Spurs will almost certainly pass Villa for 4th, but Villa really could fall apart. They've looked poor lately, and that big cup win could give United a morale boost (and with Mount and Martinez coming back from injury).
