I think you should swap the heritage and mainline tracks. The mainline, which is your main running tracks really need as big a radius as possible to prevent that unnatural thing where the rolling stock ends "pop out", which looks really "meh" and it looks like a "trainset" rather than a model.
@@tehklevster doesn't it depend what radius those curves are already, they are probably fine and there is a reason he wants more play value on the heritage line, he's not going to be shunting and using passing loops on an Intercity. Also not really sure what effect you are referring too?
Its all about compromise, for the mainline to be at the back in one format means its at the front in another.
@@Alex-cw3rz So the minimum radius on the visible mainline bit is 700mm, most of it is greater than 900mm, This is more than plenty for oo gauge, Given that hornby 4th radius is 575mm
That’s some excellent editing! Love getting your commentary while also the “boring” but very necessary painting gets done in the back ground. So much better than just having a pop box overlay.
Nice to see the table top painted whilst you relaxed Richard 🙂
I’ve never seen a layout that can be set up two totally different ways. That’s very well designed! I can’t wait to see it come to life!
That is not the usual production you see in a model railroad video. That was outstanding. Several times I got distracted watching you paint and had to go back to hear what you had just said. I really like the direction the new New Junction will be going. Great plan and great work. Cheers - Larry.
Thanks Larry!
Wow!!!! A whole garage for your layout… and a personal assistant!!!!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Excellent video, too much fun, I spent the whole time watching the boards being painted but I could hear someone talking in the background.
haha whatever floats your boat!
Hi Richard. Super exciting stuff. My thought is, if the layout goes to exhibitions via the garage door, then you'll be having to move the river-end units every time. But if you were to rotate the layout 180 degrees, and have the tunnel end by the garage door, then you can load up the tunnel end and the two main straights, and never have to move the river end at all. Please ignore this if I've got the layout upside down from what you're planning. Cheers, Kev.
Ah Kevin, you're on the right wave length! In reality its a long way of a exhibition so I'll scenic the side in the middle of the garage first, then turn the layout round so I can do the other side and it'll be ready for exhibitions. 😅
Exactly the same thought went through my mind, so I had to watch the 2 earlier episodes to see if I had misunderstood your intentions, Richard. You must build it to leave the non-exhibition element permanently at the dead end of the garage. If you do not, and you do go to exhibitions, you have to move that elsewhere every time you take it on show, AND rebuild the complete layout on return, rather than just three quarters of it. You have to have a very good reason to do it as you currently intend, Best wishes, Roger -I enjoy what you do.
@@rogerbass6235 Hi Roger. Just as I thought, but Richard's comment put me right. He's set it up round the wrong way temporarily. This is so he can have better access to do scenic work to the eventual "wall side" and "non-traveling end". Once that's done he'll turn everything 180 degrees and the "non-traveling end" will now be at the back wall of the garage.
Richard, you have me glued, I’m like a puppy dog, so excited to see this progress into ‘New Junction’ with running trains, which I must admit, I have missed. The phoenix will rise once more. Stay safe.
Used to watch you all the time years ago, haven't watched in a while, going to watch this series, very excited! Great content!
Who knew a track plan video could be so entertaining? Excellent video, chap! Looking forward to seeing this come together 👍
Thanks Andrew, as ever! Hope you're keeping well, especially you're brother! 🤞🏻
With the trackplan, if i was doing it:
-I would have a small unstaffed station for two or four car DMU trains on the main line
-I would not use a double slip on the heritage line goods shed - these are a reliability nightmare
-I would keep the heritage line DC-friendly
But I'm not doing it, so keep up the good work (Rule 1 - your railway - your decisions)
Hi Richard well it does sound exciting can't wait to see it all come to life , the only thing im not sure about is it means your going to have to move that end bit near the garage door before you can get out and if its raining that will be needed to be covered up while its outside whem moving the exibition sections it really needs to be moved round 180 degres , otherwise looks good . b t w you really need to have a word with your brother it took him 20 mins to paint that end of the layout lol a bit slow with the tea as well :) that should be firt thing going lol , anyway joking aside good luck sounds great
and i look forward to next video A T B Syd
Love this 🤣 Brilliant - Love the idea on the layout - challenging but definitely worth all the extra time planning as you have done..👍 Gazzer
Most "Track plan" videos can be quite dull, with not much to see. With a little (Probably lots of) out of the box thinking, and a bit of jiggery pokery, you have provided us with a very entertaining video. Clearly lots of effort went into it, and the results speak for themselves. Top Job!
Hey Richard… hope you and the family are well.
Enjoyed the video. Great fun with you and Richard 2 interacting. Nicely done 👌
Looking forward to the next video about progress on this project.
Regards …. Steve 👍
Two Richards! Oh no!!!
I AM ancient, but I feel even older when I realise my "new" layout is based on a Peco track plan from the 1960s (possibly earlier) and not some computer generated thing. I always admire exhibition layouts as it's hard enough to build a layout, but even harder to make it moveable AND work when you get there! This, to me, seems to be a stage further - it's got to work in two modes. Just as well your twin is on hand to help out. Cheers
Really enjoying watching you progress through planning and building the trainline I haven't the room to be able to build anything as my place is currently too small but love watching and getting ideas off how you all do it 😁
Thanks Dan
Cant wait to see more that comes.
What a great idea, that's ingenious and looks fun to build. Your Brother looks a bit pissed off doing all the work!
Nice one Rich. Great fun, rather well edited, if a little schizophrenic! 🧔♂️🧔♂️
And as for Nunu Junction, thanks for slipping in something (ooh er) that crossed my mind but I wasn’t sure I would be allowed to post 🤣😂😅 Really like the idea of the different levels as it makes it quite clear the two lines were always entirely separate entities. I have an idea though which I hope you might like involving a bit of “overgrown disused station” which is always a favourite feature for me! ☺️ I’ve sent a PM anyhow mate! 👍
Great stuff. Definitely do the automated crossing mate. That will be terrific 😎
Cheers Rich 👍 🍀 🍻
This is a great idea, hope it goes smoothly
If you’re using that paint to seal the plywood from humidity and temperature swings in the garage, you’re going to want to seal the top, bottom, and all sides of the wood parts.
Yes! 😊
And not with a water-based paint.
I was thinking the same - damp may penetrate from underneath and distort the boards into a series of shallow depressions.
I built my 12x8ft shed layout using 13mm cheap internal grade (I.e. not WBP) plywood from B&Q, and painted the top surface only with water based paint. Despite the lack of heating and damp conditions during the winter, the plywood has not warped. My station platforms however were built with 13mm MDF, and they require heavy lead weights to prevent curling over winter.
There’s some very clever editing going on here!
Cheers Richard
Excellent update Richard. Very entertaining! And it’s good night from me… And it’s good night from him! Good night! Cheers Ross, building a layout at East Coast DCC
I love the effort put into this video. And it really worked well!
Few! Glad you enjoyed it!
Like your track plan. Creative design. Also like your baseboard design and height. Please keep posting.
Cannot wait to see how New New Junction looks eventually!
Great video Richard. Very impressive
looks like a butternut squash in garage mode, I like it
Ha you're right!
'Other you' quietly working in the background is a great touch. I think you should employ him more in future videos!
I know this video was made a while ago but I wanted to comment to say that I loved the production quality and style of this: funny and really well done. The sections where you talk to yourself are genius haha!!
Thanks Frank, really appreciate the comment!
@@NewJunction how do you plan out the conversations with yourself? How do you know how long to wait to respond to the other line?
@@franksanteugini1071 keeping the discussions simple and all in the edit to merge it together. The hard bit was actually giving myself a cup of tea at the end. 😄
Omg I didn’t realise but you are local to me if you spot in Langford! 🙌 it’s a great spotting location!
Good video,
One suggestion would be, I don't think the road should go into a tunnel, it'd be more prototypical for the road to go over the hill through a small cutting as it'd have been much cheaper to build.
The bit with the mug of tea is VERY clever
Took a while to get that right haha
Looks epic Richard - love the idea of the heritage line sweeping under the mainline. Looking forward to seeing it at an exhibition one day! 😀
Wow Richard, that looks ambitious, well the way ahead looks exciting good luck with it and I'll enjoy following your progress take care Eddy xx
Genius track plan from garage to exhibition mode 👏
Thanks Kev
First, always love these videos, would love to know your honest thoughts about prices in the hobby recently. As it’s hard for a young person like myself to get into the hobby now as the prices have increased and it’s stopping the hobby grow I feel.
It's a difficult one as many factors will be out of the various manufacturers hands :(
@@NewJunction oh right, thank you very much :).
Thanks for the amazing video, it’s one of the only ways to enjoy the hobby at the moment as sadly it’s also looked down upon at times. Keep up the good work :)
First time they release new Northern and Serco Northern stuff, and it's about the same as my paycheck
@@ashleywilson8033 Don't let anyone put you down for having a great hobby! On the model front keep an eye on second hand and Railroad items :)
@@NewJunction I am, thank you. I am trying to find and have seen a few decent second hand models online just browsing through. Thank you for the help. :)
This video was like watching paint dry :-)
Ba dum tssh! 🤣
So now we have Richard and Richard the Flash collabing on the same episode. Never knew you had clashing realities!
Bear in mind, if you do go for super-elevation, aka, banking in the curves, the greatest figure that the high rail is raised is 150 mm on Network Rail infrastructure. This equates to a smidge under 2 mm in 00 scale, so its not a lot!! I'm also thinking of using it on my own new layout. Good luck in the build, Ill be keeping an eye on developments!!👍
Enjoyed that. Looking forward to seeing your model railway develop.
Brilliant video, liking the plans and if you do decide to put a mainline Station next to the heritage line, a idea would be make it 2 or 3 coaches long to for Northern Trains stopping there and the LNER Trains pass through at speed still
Great idea, many thanks!
Wow! Very clever this. Literally could not see how exhibition mode was going to join up from the tail chaser and then it popped up on screen! Looking forward to seeing this take shape and the good news is now there are two of you it will be done twice as quickly 🤣.
Brilliant with the mini yous at the beginning of the video Richard and the twinnie you painting the boards 😆 Can’t wait for the next video m8 👍
Making my brain hurt a bit, but brilliant, looking forward to progress. Very clever humorous filming......love it. Peter
Love the dynamics between you and you 😅😎
Brilliant video as ever Richard, I'm really liking the look of the track plan as well, like the sweeping nature of the mainline to. A loop or two on the mainline would certainly look good with that sweeping look to it to. Really like the look of the scenics and heritage line to. I'm intrigued to see how you do the two levels with the mainline passing over the heritage line. Keep up the excellent work as ever
Cheers
James
Ahhh, the track planning stage, by far the hardest part and always so many boxes that should be ticked, haha! I love the concept of making a modular system and have toyed with this myself. I do not know how much you plan to use the layout in each mode however it does feel like you are planning to build an exhibition layout but still have the option to use it at home in garage mode. My concerns with garage mode is that if you are operating in the middle and the main line is above the heritage line and the heritage line is where your operating scope is at, will you be able to see much of what is going on? No fiddle yard in garage mode would also be a concern. Having said all that, if your twin brother is around to help out in garage mode then he could always be there to swap trains for you...! All the best and look forward to the next update :-)
Love how u done the over lay with your double on screen
Ha glad you enjoyed it
I've been waiting for the follow up to episode one, glad I caught it early =)
Great stuff! 😄
Thanks for the video and thanks for sharing the AnyRail file. It's nice to see someone using the Layers function to allow different types of layout elements to be shown. Also, thanks for the pointer regarding being able to move the layout. I am at the advanced planning stage for my own Z gauge project, but will be reworking my baseboard segmentation and framing underneath to ensure that I can move the layout in four separate pieces if we ever need to move house. I shall follow this project with interest. Subscribed. :)
Many thanks, glad to have you on board!
Two Richards 🤣Legend mate!! Really looking forward to progress on this 👍
Hi. First of my visits to your RUclips videos. So I'm glad to catch it near the first stages. It looks impressive... I can't wait for the end product ☺️
Thanks Gus
That's what I need to do split my self up to make the most of the week end. I battle to run and maintain my garden railway. Now I know how to have a garsen railway and a indoor railway.
Re stations. Carnforth is on both mainline & branch, but no mainline trains stop. You could have decaying remnants of the main line station above the heritage station (imagine if they'd close Wigan North Western, but left Wigan Wallgate - probably loads of other examples)
Excellent ideas. Very good two video start. Looking forward to Number 3. Would the painter in blue like to come and paint our spare room?
Wow fair play mate cracking layouy plan cant wait to see the track going down and you starting the scenic's
Well done the ` PAIR `of you .Looks like its going to be a great layout and keep the updates coming ..just wish i had put mine on the Tube !!!
Richard. How about the main line being at the outside for the bends and the heritage line being outside for the "straights" and also having the branch line moving off to the inside? That way you will get the largest radius sweeps for your modern image, the branch lines and the heritage don't need such generous curves, as they take slower traffic.
Your so blessed to have a twin brother, I 've got to do every thing by my self, lol.
Fully enjoyed this video - very funny with your assistant. Like your plan. 🚂👍
Thanks 😁
Hi Richard.
Great to see progress on the 00 Gauge layout, and looking forward to seeing it develop over the next few months.
Also, really loving the new intro, and how you have developed your video technique over the years.
Loved the video Richard! You have certainly got the animation covered for the layout! re the wiring, I would isolate your tracks as you build to make the blocks but just wire them into choc blocks, then onto your main bus so when you go down the automation the track is ready to wire straight into the detectors if your using current sensing! one idea for the heritage line on board 5 at the end of the platform you could have a camping coach which would also add a bit more scenic interest. No doubt I'll see you at Glasgow, whereby you may get more inspiration and a lighter wallet 🤣🤣. All the best Tony
Hi Richard, if you want to keep the river as a feature in Exhibition Mode, how about introducing a bridging piece between boards 4 and 5 which has the river features on it? Something as small as a 2ft board should give enough space for an impressive river crossing for all lines and it would be a good visual break between the Heritage Yard and Station operations.
Looking forward to seeing this layout evolve. Just curious why the end section that will not be used in exhibition mode is next to the garage door. wouldn’t it make sense to be on the back wall and then you never have to move it.
That exhibition and garage mode seperation is an excellent idea
If it works it will be haha
I love me a good track plan video! Thanks!
The split screen is amazing
Looking forward to seeing lots of Richard II/New New Junction/Blue Jumper Rick
You could have a shorter station on the mainline, something built recently to replace a closed platform from the heritage line station that would have closed in the 60s and reopened in the last few years and thus would only be built for a shorter DMU with minimal buildings, that would allow you to have a station without it being so dominant as to overwhelm the scene
Top idea, will see what room we have. 😊
Love it. Very clever design and I look forward to seeing the progress. All the best from HILLSHOT TRAIN LAYOUT.
Thanks Marin
Smooth camera work - we'll let you off the couple of cut-off hands. The mug was NEAT.
Double trouble 🤣🤣 nice one 👍
Gets the job done haha
Great video!
Watching form the U.S., I am looking forward to seeing your progress on this new layout. Always interesting to see how you address different modeling challenges as your layout evolves.
Thanks Grey fox!
Brilliant work
Thanks for the update, Richard, looking forward to seeing the progress, and maybe see the layout at an exhibition in the coming years!
That was awesome, with the 2 of you. At least it will now take have the time. 😂.
Really enjoyed the video, the plan look impressive, getting everything to meet up is really hard. Look forward to seeing it grow.
Hiya Richard and Richard, loving the idea and watching with great interest…it’s gonna be a good one..Chris
Looks like an interesting challenge Richard. I do like the idea of a raised mainline - The new Gowerton Parkway struck me as being a great concept too - you've probably seen that already. Kind Regards Matt
I missed it in the first Ep of New New Junction, but I just noticed the figurine of you in the opening title to the video.
Nicely done and well played! Leamington Spa looks like a nice station IRL and model form!
Haha yes he gets around 😅
Hi Richard, a really great update, looking forward to following the build process, lots to look forward to.
So 1st off, AMAZING EDITING.
Second, you just can't get the staff these days ehy 🤣
And finally, I'm so excited to see the progress and I love the idea of a hybrid style changeable layout
See you next time fella
Who's your mate?
Interesting Richard. I am looking forward to seeing it develop. I used Anyrail for my Melbourne Military Railway. That layout has a river and two sound modules: a farm and lineside. I also used the railway station and urban sounds on a child's under-bed stored layout.
Oooo very nice, the moduals are surprisingly effective
I think a good compromise not having a fiddle yard on the garage layout but maybe a couple of loops just to store trains on the mainline without having to remove an 8 coach 125/Azuma etc!
So glad you're back. Clever video skills!
What a brilliant idea to make a changeable layout looking forward to seeing this develop 👍🏻👍🏻
Many thanks!
Made me chuckle, like the idea of disused platforms on the ECML built in to be part of the heritage line station split level of course, the branch line could be similar to new junction, be a New Junction being built that way you can form the track bed but don’t have to worry about a working line. Will watch with bated breath 👍
The real test will be to see what the track looks like when its down
This build shouldn't take too long , what with Lulu and New New helping . Good fun .
I think New New Junction is better looking LOL
Personally I would also make the heritage line a double track aswell.
Enjoying the video and looking forwards to the progress. Shame it is not N Gauge though.
Regards Chris
Fantastic video Richard. I love your track plan I like the idea of having the mainline with a heritage line running along side it! kind of reminds me of some of the lines that I have here in Australia! Looking forward to seeing some track laid and trains running. - Nicholas.
Brilliant video!
Great video, both the layout stuff and the editing. Really looking forwards to see this develop.
Cheers Caz
Great video Richard and really like your plans! Think the concept of a garage model and exhibition mode is excellent and I'm sure you'll get a lot enjoyment taking it out!
Hope you tipped that fella in the blue hoodie!
Joe
Hi Richard. Your twin brother - I'm afraid I don't know his name - is clearly a dab hand with a roller! I'm not competent to give any advice on layout design but I do think your two level solution sounds brilliant. If it goes well, I shall hope to do something similar in my next layout. Really looking forward to watching how you tackle all the challenges, and integrate all the features you've already identified. Chris Moss
What a brilliant video ..so glad your back doing these...hopefully is a must use word on this video ..looking forward to see how this develops ...Great stuff cheers
WOW Great Video Richard , Very clever filming mate , Your proposed track plan ticks all the boxes in my opinion , I didn't know about the Gaugemaster signal box sound system this could be of use to me Regards David
double inpact :D brilliant idea
Hi Richard, excellent video, the concept sounds great getting it all to match up in both modes sounds interesting! will look forward to seeing how you perfect that aspect. as always stay safe.
