Football is not a snootier term than Soccer. Soccer is an Oxford Uni/ public school style abbreviation. I.E rugby football is Rugger, a boy named Cameron would be Cammers, Association Football is Soccer. Whilst other football games (Eton school rules, Rugby school rules etc.) were mainly popular in schools, football association set national rules and took the game to 'the people'. Its anti-posh snobbery to say the FA rules are the only thin called Football.
