- In this video I would like to share with you my thoughts about the GBB23 World League Solo Wildcard Winners.
For me it was a big honor to judge this category again. I believe transparency will only help our community to become better and better.
Big ups to all the participants for the crazy wildcards. The level was insane! Thanks for the beatbox inspiration! :)
Guys, please respect the decisions from all of the judges. It is ok if you disagree, I also disagree but I do accept and respect the opinion of the others.

I would be really interested in your opinion on sashe in a new video. I know his basics are not up there but It gave me one of the most emotion while hearing, would be interesting what you thought about it ❤
Yeah Sashe did great. I think he has huge potential. He already has his own character which is probably the most difficult thing. Fundamentals are all about practice.

hello. i dont have anything special to say except for thanking you for being transparent and open about the rankings! i hope more judges learn and open up because due to the hidden judge system, many artists cant get proper criticism and feedback. Thank you!
Thank you! I know it is important for all the participants to know what they can improove. That’s why we need transparency. Unfortunately I know that people sometimes can be rude just because they have different opinion. I think the only way to fight against this is to be open and educate the new members in the community. :)

Decisions for this year were phenomenal! The only ones i have a slight disagreement with is the tag team wildcard decision but that's about it, big up! Can't wait to see the top 25 rock it out on the stage!
I also agree that the solo and u18 results in general are quite good. I did not see all the videos from the other categories. After finishing the 2 round of solos I will defenitelly check all the other videos.
For such competitions, will be great if all do judges do so! Great idea, bro

U r not the only one then, everyone has they own preference even judges. Those scorecards told u already. That's why wildcards announcement usually come with some surprise everytimes. (Atleast for me)

What do you think of Dlow's judging system of Musicality/Tech? He kept 26 points total for M+T, and depending on what style of wildcard it is, he split the max score into 13+13, 12+14, 4+22 etc
Imo this system allows more room for creativity in your own style - doesn't force a musical beatboxer to do tech fillers and doesn't force tech beatboxers to sing just for points
To go one step further, you could perhaps let the artists decide their split. Like say if someone kept Musicality+Tech = 3+23 because they felt more technically inclined, but while judging you realise their tech is not that great. Then their final score would look like (1+11)/26 = 12/26

I have never been a fan of diving so generously the musicality from technicality. Rhythm for example is a key part from music. Technicality without groove is just a bunch of random sounds. That's why I think that being technical does not necessarely mean that you are not musical.
I think that It would be probably good idea to set a standard between the judges. For example if we find a timing issue we need to know exactly how many points to exclude . Same for pitching, structure etc... May be this will help us to be more objective. I know there will be always subjectivity but at least this standard will unify our different opinions.

@@skillerbeatbox Totally agree with this! The categories blend in too much - it often depends on the judge's interpretation, so you're right having official judging standards could be explored going forward
There's a debate about Originality as well - it's obvious when a beatboxer is covering a popular song that it is a cover, and sometimes judges may deduct some points for that. But it's also possible that they took the song of an underground artist and forgot to credit them, in which case we may be led to believe it is self-written
Like for example, I was surprised by the funky-style intro of Mr Androide - the placements of the scratches and the groove were unlike anything I've heard! But I was slightly disappointed to find out it's a cover of a song called Down The Road by C2C
Not taking anything away from him, he did an amazing rendition, but some of the stylish glitchy sounds that I 'assumed' were from his style were actually from the song itself

Jp has great overall ranking. I did not put him so high because he also had a significant timing issue. Even though he had from me a lot of points for his musicality and almost the maximum points for originality. Last time I heard Jp was at Florida battle and I see huge progress just for half an year… he is crazy ! 💥

I didn't realize the tempo change tbh, it was not that much of a deterrent for me. I hear it now, but imo he used the liproll/synth part as a 'tempo bridge' if that makes sense - smoothens the switch up
But yeah every judge has his unique flair tooI guess - Dlow for instance values Originality a lot, similarly I feel Timing is your forte so you value it a bit more. So I can understand that too
When I am judging, I am looking for the perfect and complete wildcard where you can not say that anything was wrong. From the fundamentals to the structure, dynamics, execution and all the other aspects. I am not focused only on the timing or on the technical aspect. In my top 50 you can see a lot of beatboxers who use melodies and harmonies as a main way to express their musical idea.
In the particular case, timing was the main issue. If he did it on purpose than I can argue if this was the best decision for the structure in the end. There were some little sounds that were not very clean (I am not talking about the mic cupping) . Still Mr. Andoide smashed it with supper nice wildcard. Do you understand how crazy was this competition. On my 50th place I have a World Champion. :O In my top 70 I can also show you some crazy names. The level was insane and I am really looking forward for the 2nd round. I am not prejudiced. I know that mr. Androide is a world class level and he can be 1st place for me next round. I just saw this little inaccuracies which reflected on my score.

Yeah Mr. Androide does have some inconsistencies - as a listener it doesn't matter too much, but yeah probably sticks out during judging since sooo many wildcards are near perfect!
And I didn't imply you're biased ofc, but having different judges having different 'flavours' is also something that could be tried. Instead of categories for each judge, what if we had one judge for each category? Probably not sensible lol, but could be a nice experiment - you judging timing/tech, Dlow judging originality, Gene judging musicality something like that. Could possibly reduce the 'unconscious' subjectivity across different categories - or probably just a bad idea idk haha
@@sahaj8693 For sure it is good to try this formula. The thing is that the expectations for GBB are so high and I don’t think that it is very appropriate to make experiments at this level. We need to be sure that it works beofre aplying it on the big events.
I am fan of this idea with the individual judge for each category. There were some small events but in a different ( strange ) format.

Totally agree! Even though his wildcard was so interesting and stylish it was not enough to be in top 25. The competition is supper strong and everybody gives 100%. I think Two H decided to do more minimalistic wildcard because he has nothing to prove. We all know that he is a beast!
I would love to see you showing off your entire scorecard, with all 120+ entries just so see you total scores for all (and of course I would love to see how you scored mine haha)
After top 50 we were not obliged to rank people so I can not tell you exactly what was your rank. But I remember that your ideas were well presented because I felt the emotions from your wildcard. You were honest. The melody was catchy, you were energetic, the structure was fine. If I was on your place I would work a little bit more on cleaning some of my sounds and adding some interesting and original combos in my music ideas. So just keep enjoying bro! You have the passion, so it is all about time... :)

Cloud did supper stylish wildcard as well. May be he just needed to add a little bit more special flavor and he would have been easily in.

What if there was a judging panel with judges judging individual aspect of the sets? Like techinicality , musicality, execution etc. how could this be different from the current system since in the end it’s still the average of all the judge’s opinion?
This is something that we discussed many times and I think there were some small events ( in Germany or Austria ) where this system was tested. We need to try it in a smaller events before we can say what is better . GBB is too big to experiment.

I 1000% think you should all have the same system, otherwise it’s like scoring a boxing match with different rules, I understand every judge is different but this is something that deffo should be the case 😁
I agree that if we use 1 system it will be better. Still we gonna have different perspectives from judges but the decisions will come out of the same algorithm.

Can you make a detailed explanation of how the rankings work? or if someone already made a video doing that? Because even though Remix wasn't in dlows top 50 and got 0 points he had enough points to make it top 25 regardless.
If we have 25 beatboxers the first place gets 25 points, second place 24 points etc. to be honest I am not sure if SBX counted our top 25 list or top 50. Eirher way, the system is the same.

Hi Skiller, I have some question.. What happen if someone got the same average rank after 2nd round wildcards? I dont understand in case we have no.10,11,12 at the same average rank and we need only top 11 wildcards to go through.
If I understand you correctly … when there are beatboxers with the same amount of points ( ranks ) than the individual scores from the judges decide who is going trough. The beatboxer with the higher votes from judges has advantage.
@@skillerbeatbox I would like to know if we're deciding final 11th through rank, doesn't that means people who is 25th, have no chance going in even they got 1st on second round? as there's only 11th place.
@@junyan2604 The final rank isn't straight up the average. They give 50 points to 1st, 49 to 2nd....and so on, 2 points to 49th and 1 point to 50th
So final ranking is based on sum of scores of both wildcards
While it's pretty hard for anyone under 20th to get in top 7, it's still possible
@@sahaj8693 what about point system in 2nd round ? 1st place still get 50 point or just 27 point? Because round 2 only have 27 guys to give

I ranked him lower for similar reasons like some other beatboxers. Some of his combos were out of timing.

Every judge could use another method of judging instead of using sbx method? How is that fair ?

I think that it would have been better if we all use 1 system. I guess the logic is that they select judges who have experience so they delegated responsibility to us to do the work. Considering the fact that judging system is very delicate topic, SBX treated this situation respectfully. I believe we need to discuss this topic more often in public. This is the only way to find the best way to judge subjectivity. That's one of he reasons I made this video. We need to talk about that.... :)

He only applied for the normal solo category maybe he did not apply correctly for U18 or not at all

I heard he is 17, but because he'll turn 18 before GBB so he can't participate in the U18 category, so it was probably a misunderstanding. But it was allowed for people to submit to Under 18 and Solo category with 1 wildcard if they wanted.
@@YnEoS10 if you are u18 abd you want to try in solo category you can decide which one to chose after the results.
@@skillerbeatbox Small correction. If your U18/Solo wildcard gets a passing rank (Top25) in Solo, you may no longer join U18. But yes ultimately, U18 can join solo.

all in all, its just your taste and my taste.
I think judgers should jump out of beatboxers' taste.
The good old tricks that make you feel well are the same thing. they are not as impressive if you really taste and think about it. (will you listen to it again if you cover the screen?)
I am not even talking about musicality or anything here, I am talking about beatbox from a normal person's perspective.
Just like how wing napom and android get top3, thats the thing community really need.
If they make it to the champ, they won't just sell their CDs of special combos in their Discord or Onlyfans. They are the type of beatboxer who can be real influencers.
I am not saying normal person's taste is good. I am saying sometimes beatboxers have worse taste than normal people.
You mentioned if mr android didn't have "tempo mistake" you would rank him 15th place.
You see, you already put him in 15 place even if he try his best to fit your taste.
and "tempo mistake" is not a mistake when it sounds good.
If you really skeptical to tempo mistake, you should review GBB21, and tell everyone they should wash their ears and listen to some good music with good tempos. (I will appreciate it for real)

The reason for me to type these negative stuff is probably because here is the only transparency we can get.

and I wanna say more, Me as a beatboxer, I have been into crazy combos/skills for years. you know. I had the same old "beatboxers' taste"
But those crazy stuff are not necessarily good as a music. They are probably a part of uncompleted concept if you know what i mean.
I think judging beatbox nowadays in Event like GBB. Judgers should say "oh that part sounds good" rather than "ohh that part is cool".
you don't have system that auto mix&master competitors' wildcards. You don't imagine what the processed crazy combos would be.
You receive raw input, ahh that sounds awful. and you make it rank lower, thats what judgers should do.
@@pinky797 Before we discuss anything, lets be correct with the quotes. I never said something like "tempo mistake". I would never do it simply because I can't be sure if he did it on purpose or he did it unintentionally.
If he did it on purpose I can argue if this is the best decision for the structure because he already proved us how he can switch the tempo in a supper stylish way with a drastic change. That was classy. Check out his original video from 0:24 till the tempo switch. This change worked 100 % and actually gave him more points from me. Considering the fact that his style is so progressive and he has so many sounds and textures, I think that if he had used twice the same method (transition) for his outro ( which is actual comeback to his first theme ) would have only helped listeners to understand clearly his ideas.
If he did the tempo change unintentionally than we talk about a little inaccuracy which unfortunately dragged me back from my enjoyment.
In both of the cases this costs points.
Don't forget that the work of the judge is to look for this kind of things. I am not too picky, I just try to see and hear things that will help me to take a decision.

i still dont get why mr androide is ranked so high in the judges scores, for me it was just so basic, especially imagine him on stage he wouldnt be that powerfull as a helium or remix, trust me he is so overrated
I've seen him live many times live and he is very impressive. And by the way he is very powerful. I like his style a lot even though I scored him at 33th place.
