DIY - Low Profile LED Can Lights - Make Your Own

- I needed two less than 5" Low Profile recessed can lights to match the rest of the lights in my basement. I couldn't find any commercially available, so I made my own using a standard 6" can light housing, Cooper LED retrofit kit and documented how in this video.
The result was a cool safe light fixture that easily mounts in the soffit below my HVAC runs. Хобби
Ok I consider myself pretty smart and savvy, but you just saved me 3.5" of ceiling space in my upstairs sloped roof bathroom. My roof beams are only 5 inches. Watching this video and $15 at Harbor Freight just cleared a lot more room in the bathroom. The LED kits don't even get warm compared to the bulbs I had in there before. So thanks a lot for posting this.
+elpatl74 Glad I could help out. Yes the LED's are a lot cooler and shallower. Here's to more headroom in bathrooms with can lights!
Great video. I was thinking of doing this and wondered if anyone else had attempted it. Know I know exactly what I'm getting myself into.
Glad it helped...

I've had to do this before lol
Now they make LED recessed lighting that does not need a housing. Even the gimbal type. Very handy
nop.
can't finding what you talking about.
all led lights need a can.
or smaller 3" 4" include basic housing but it's a non insulation.
RECESSED LIGHT COMPANYS..
THEY HATE YOU. .
BUT WE LOVE YOU.
any issues with worrying about heat buildup? I have a low profile can with bulb, need to trip about 1/2" so the top is not hitting the board above it. I left the light on for almost an hour outside of the opening, just to see how hot the top of the can got. can still touch it, so i don't think if i cut it down by 1/2" to allow some room between the top and the platform above it would be any kind of a problem? it is for a 3" LED downlight. Very small place to put it in, above a shelf; need to do 3, they are in a corner and there are 3 shelves with about 4" headroom. the can is 4" itself, so it would be touching the bottom of the shelf above it, inside the drywall.
Thank you for posting this video. You cut off 2.5 inches to get a 5 inch profile. Approximately how much more do you think could be cut off while fitting these very same LED lights into the can? Thank you for considering my question.
I could have cut off another 1" if I needed to. I wanted to leave plenty of breathing room and didn't have a tight fit where I needed to put them. Your mileage may vary depending on the design of the LED transformer setup.
How many of those cans did you modify?
I just had to make 2 of them for my installation.
THINKING THIS IS OK IF YOU USING "LED LIGHTS" (LEDS ARE NOT HOT WHEN ARE ON)
I WILL NOT USE THIS IF I'M GOING TO USE A BULB LIGHT.
you destroy the UL listing of the fixture when you do this. I don't recommend this if you're a hired contractor
+Darin Van Dorn Agreed Darin. If you need UL listed product, this obviously isn't after modified like this.
