I’ve been watching your videos for a while and I’ve never seen anybody tedious as you when it comes prepping for paint or undercoating. I commend you for patience and patience as you jump into a dirty job.
Have recently discovered your channel and am loving watching this project. I’m also amazed that the undercoat has lasted so long. With some British car of that era I doubt the undercoat survived long enough for it to still be there when the car left the factory!
5:43 It is not pointless. That's why I appreciate you, and that's what separates you from the average car enthusiast. I wish you would be my car mechanic.
If you are a long term watcher like me NOTHING ever surprises you about ocd cleaning by Sarah The standard Is perfection or as close as possible and nothing less Later much later the standards attained early on will all become clear as this build will belie its age and overspray will be a distant memory Well done , proud of this work so far
Fart blaming, LOL. The epoxy coat was brilliant. You still have the sound deadening feature from the factory coat. Both bumpers look so much nicer without the bumperettes. Another great video.
Next time you want to clean fender wells, buy Meguiar’s hot rim chrome wheel cleaner G19124. They make one for aluminum wheels to so make sure it’s says chrome wheel cleaner. I think u will be surprised. Plus I’ve used it to clean a lot of stuff that are hard to get clean. Keep videos coming. We luv them.
Back around 1980 I worked at a dealership as a lot boy, etc. I wound up taking on the responsibility of rustproofing the new cars that came in. The joke was all the cars were already rustproofed at the factory. When I asked why I was doing it again, I was told because it only cost $30 to apply but the dealer charged $300 as an option. What was really bad about it was I had to drill holes in the doors and fenders to apply the rustproofing. This created metal shavings which only made the vehicle rust faster. There was no way to prevent because the metal shavings would fall inside the doors and body panels. I didn't work at the dealership for very long. I couldn't handle the dishonesty.
The undercoating will help with sound levels inside the car. Sound deadening, I think is worthwhile. Looks like many things held up well; lights, etc. it’ll be wonderful when you’re done.👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
The Celica was a popular car in Australia. I've driven this model and it was a whole lot of fun. Many of my friends had them too. They didn't come with those Bumperettes though. I am so enjoying this build! ❤❤
It always amazes me how quickly Sarah’s videos start racking up the views and comments within minutes of the upload. I’m finding this project to be as interesting and entertaining as my favorites from the Mr. Dos catalog. I’m guessing Angel might be starting to pick some of the music selections? Thank you, Sarah. 👍👍👍
34,286 views in 6 hours. Yow. Our Girl is doing deservedly well. I'm glued to this build. I can't wait to see that machine lay rubber in all four gears!!!
Sarah - 01:49 - I have in the past for cleaning wheels and wheel wells and such, attached firm plastic brush heads (once used a toilet brush with a solid handle for my aging alloy wheels) adapted to fit a battery drill. It WORKS WONDERS, and different sized heads get into all sorts of different sized areas and angles! 👍😏 😎🇬🇧
When we clean inside the wheel wells, we use a concrete mixing tub, a garden pump sprayer bottle, warm-to-hot water, soap (simple green) mix in spray bottle with warm water, one of those detail brushes you used on the inside and towels. Don't need gallons & gallons of water and everything just drips into the tub and makes for easy clean. 👍
you should use Chip Foose's method on the rear bumper and delete the bolt heads, and fill in the bumperette holes, so its just all chrome. Have the bolt hidden on the back side. It's a classic move that Chip always does on his builds and I've always loved it because its so clean.
My guess is the undercoat is actually factory applied PVC and was baked on. I worked on the production line of an auto manufacturer in the 80's and that's how it was done. Your decision to freshen it up with bed liner is probably the best way to go.
Your cleaning for sure is more than I've seen on other car build channels. I think it seems like something that you don't HAVE to do and it's kinda glossed over. But I think of it as you are removing any potential for further corrosion on the already old metal/other parts. You could find something that's hiding maybe? There literally is no cons to doing it so it makes sense just to clean it like it was just assembled.
This is a great build. I’m enjoying how much work your putting in. I definitely get it when you say you just can’t leave it. I’ve gone down that rabbit hole quite a few times.
If you have to re-chrome the bumper, I would definitely fill in the holes. I think it will look a lot cleaner. Of course, it is easier to say when it isn’t my car or me doing the work.
I want that car so fkn bad. I had an 83 corolla coupe RWD 5speed when I was young and I've looked for anything Toyota 83 and Older and there's NOTHING left out there. I'm sad about it.
You are a unique person i watch a lot of guys repair cars and none take the time like you to start with a clean surface much less a clean underside to start with love the work you put in and the jokes you crack are well worth it one in a million 🤠
for future reference , make up a wet sand blaster , super efficient , lots of diy utube vids on them , ive done nearly my entire hilux , chassis and body with my home made wet blaster.
Keep the stainless rocker trim - DEFINITELY! It’s those little details that make early Japanese cars so cool looking. It would be like spray painting a classic silver-faced ‘70s Marantz stereo receiver black - ugh!
@@SarahnTuned Yes, it is a corrosion vector, but you have ways to alleviate that issue, but I respectfully disagree about “tacky”. You’ve got a vision and should follow it, but I truly believe that you may eventually come around to see the beauty of vintage Japanese bling. I removed the stainless from my Datsun 510’s rockers decades ago and now realize that the original designers knew proportion and detail way better than I did. Wax on, wax off….
The swap is nice to see, a step up from a basic restoration. The progression of a builder is, basic restorations, engine swaps, body modifications, suspension fabrication, then a kit car. And then the pinnacle which is a scratch build.
I'm starting to believe Sarah is gonna need a large pole barn to store all of her automotive collection in. Outside in Arizona sunshine.... The UV rays is equal to road salt where I come from.
New watcher to the channel. Working as the Procurement officer at our pick up building factory, I was wondering what type of liner you were going to use. Then I saw the mixing cup, and realised, nothing is better than Raptor
Happy Sunday Sarah!!! You keep slaying us with your jokes! Never change! The bumperette delete is akin to swapping Euro Spec bumpers onto old Mercedes SELs, night and day difference. High5 to Angel!! Stay excellent!!!😎
Toyota never used Ziebart undercoating...Why did you even bother trying to remove the factory undercoating when you were going to spray catalyzed bet liner ?!?!?!
Hey Sarah, you might find it very beneficial if you somehow were able to purchase a hot water pressure washer. I make up my own spray with pine sol and sodium hydroxide. It completely erradicates the grease and dirt. Leaves it spotless and ready for paint and smells great after. Make sure you wear the appropriate gear cause this shyt burns when it hits the skin. It cleans the area you are working in as well
The Celica is looking really great. The new undercoating looks so much better without all that gold overspray. Pain in the butt to clean up with lots of elbow grease, but it looks so much better.
My experience with cleaning undrrcoating is to use a fiber scrub brush on a cordless drill and use a product that has a strong solvent. Otherwise, I'd do exactly what you did! Great job! Looks awesome.
What I used to get undercoating off was 4.5” grinder with wire wheel attachment. It makes a huge mess, but less labor intensive than the other methods. Cover anything you don’t want dirty
P&S Brake buster FTW… my pops worked down the street from P&S in the 90s he would come home with awesome P&S products, their multi-dressing was the boom back then..
Great video! I scraped alll of the under coating from under my 65 Plymouth Valiant and 67 Barraciuda. I did this because I did not the first time I “restored “ the 67 Barracuda and the front fenders eventually rusted out from th e underside because water had gotten iunder the undercoating. Your 49 year old Toyota looks a lot cleaner with no rust so you probably don’t have to worry about such things. I used a gasket scraper , a wire brush and a propane torch, it was hard work and i looked like coal miner afterwards!
Sarah-n-Tuned is the Gold Standard for RUclips auto channels.
”Regulatoooors.. You gotta keep em separated” is my new motto. 🤣
"Robot Bukake" is definitely the name of my next garage band....And possibly the title of the first chapter in my autobiography 🤔

Looks like that Ziebart undercoating they used to give you when you bought a new car in the '70's supposedly to prevent rust. It didn't. 😁
Have recently discovered your channel and am loving watching this project. I’m also amazed that the undercoat has lasted so long. With some British car of that era I doubt the undercoat survived long enough for it to still be there when the car left the factory!

' What chemicals will dissolve an infant.'

Sarah: "This might be too much,.."
Everyone watching: "I know how to clean and protect the underside of my classic car now".
"It makes no sense to do this now", sure it does, you're Sarah and we would expect nothing less.

If you want to go all out you strip the chassis completely, put it on a rotisserie, sandblast it or dry ice, and then paint it with catalyst urethane

Chip's method is an old school method, probably taught to him by his dad Sam, a legendary Hot Rod and Custom builder himself.

I used that liner on my entire work truck. Cheap paintjob!!. Would say it chips slightly easier that regular paint tho
