I was supposed to go for my checkride on Friday (two days from now) and after watching this video, I cancelled it and will reschedule it. I have never filed a flight plan, I have never called a weather briefer, and I have never seen a helicopter route chart (didn't even know it existed). Thank you Kenny for saving me $700 and a fair bit of embarrassment.

Glad we could help! We here this from students around the country! Instructors not covering all the required actions a pilot needs to know!

If you are struggling with ground prep, get into HOGS corses and and grab a study guide. You will be glad you did.

Kenny..great video! How I remember pilotage vs. dead reckoning…pilotage, first letter is P. I think of the word Places..which are visual aids. Dead reckoning, first letter is D. I think of the word Distance..distance, speed and time = computations. Works for me!!!

My memory aid for Dead Reckoning is to think about what I've seen in movies about submarine navigation. Submariners can't see outside. So, they use charts, stopwatches and calculations to determine their course and position. If they mess it up, they might end up dead. Hence, Dead Reckoning.

Do they have to add the difference in course and speed and time with differences in water pressure and temperature and direction of the tide?

Helicopter route charts are the best ,use them more then regular charts. better detail and landmarks. i fly on long island ro the NYC all the time, u need to know them for all 3 bravos.makes transition so much easier

I wish there wasn’t so much variation in what and how DPEs can do in a check ride and oral exam. Because you can ask one person how there’s was and it can vary greatly to your own.

It's all about how well a person learns the knowledge! If a person has a quality instructor, and that same persons utilizes the PTS and studies hard to learn the knowledge, that person can excel during the checkride!

I always use the helicopter route charts when flying in Chicago air space.

Pilotage makes me think of portaging which is the process of moving a canoe over land. Obviously pilotage is a method of navigating using visual ground references.
