This is NOT the Nintendo Switch 2 (but I wish it was)

  • This week in the world of niche tech, we take a look at a "handheld" that gives us 1080p native Nintendo Switch gaming in handheld mode.

    I'm not sure this device is justifiable for literally any market. Any streaming that isn't the Switch would be better done over Wifi with something like a $200-300 AYN Odin Pro/2, and who is going to pay $350 just to stream their Switch at 1080p with possible connection drops instead of on the Switch itself rock solid at 720p? I'm just confused why this exists other than as a tech demo for the screen beaming tech.

  • @locdogg39

    Also, this is a nice improvement. I wouldn't have thought this would have gotten to a v2.

    All they need to do is make the peakdo dongle support the sunshine/moonlight protocol. Connect to the user's wifi, and blast the stream on that to any client devices. No room level restriction anymore and a lot of devices can be clients. Suddenly the tech won't be as niche anymore. I'd buy at least 2.

    The main thing for me is I wish this had analogue triggers (maybe theres hope for the Switch 2 if the controller mounts are compatible), the wireless technology is a lot better than what the PS Portal uses and I could see myself using it as such a product. It's expensive but also unique and for niche products you always pay a premium.

      Agreed. I'm thinking of getting a budget handheld, so I'm trying 2 figure out which one would be between the ayn odin pro or the axbylute

    • @mattdavis9601
      @mattdavis9601 8 месяцев назад +1

      The Axbylute has a very low end quad core Mediatek processor. It's perfect for streaming; but, emulation and native Android gaming is going to be lackluster. If you like the Axbylute's form factor then I'd encourage you to look into the Logitech G Cloud. Same big screen, same launcher, somewhat better ergonomics, and a ton more power for not a whole lot more money. Supposedly both were offshoots of an aborted Lenovo Legion Android handheld that Taki tested on this channel a while back.
      The Odin Pro will have more power than either; but, a smaller screen. The base Odin 2, rocking an SD 8G2 processor, is an absolute steal at $300 and if you can stretch your budget, it's definitely the one to get vs. the OG Odin, Odin Lite, G Cloud, or Axbylute.

You do have to modify the ipad frame a little but you can use a dremel. All the rest is 3d printing and wire routing. Oh and if you want it to be wireless you just get a wireless HDMI dongle and plug it into the control board.

    I like this for the technology behind it, but I think a much better experience for someone looking to get the most out of their existing switch is modding and overclocking. I am playing through Red Dead Redemption in beautiful 60fps on the beautiful Switch OLED screen and I wouldn't have it any other way. 720p never bothered me on such a small screen.

  • @tomoprime217
    @tomoprime217 8 месяцев назад +5

    I've been asking for something like this but mine is way simpler and cheaper to make. Just have a type-c power and send display port signal with controller functionality. Thats it. No battery, no wireless, no custom soc. Keep it light, and cheap for us PC owners. I hope the next iteration is in a clam shell design. As is the pricing is ridiculous. Might as well invest in a steamdeck or open box rog ally.

    So you can essentially play any digital ps5 games, Xbox games, pc games or switch games as well as emulate any old systems yet people don’t feel it’s worth $350? I don’t get it…then why are steam decks and others like the new Lenovo legion or asus rog products worth much more? Don’t be critical on me as I don’t know much on these…it just seems if it does all that sufficiently (unless I read wrong) then it should be well worth it. I get it doesn’t go 4K or whatever but that’s a rather small setback in the scheme of things

      I guess it's a tad better than the Sony handheld in the sense that you can play non-exclusive games. The problem with the device is that it tries to aim for a very niche middle spot between "good screen" and "handheld".... and also "requiring external hardware".
      If you wanted a good screen, it'd be better to just get a monitor, which have: a cheaper price, a higher quality screen, a higher brightness, larger screen size, etc.
      It's not like you'll be leaving the room either, since this Peakdo handheld can only support a connection up to one room.
      If you wanted a good handheld, there are infinitely better options out there. You can get an OLED Switch or a Steam Deck for literally the same price, and surprise, surprise, they can actually play games without requiring some additional console or computer. These devices also have the benefit of actually being portable.

    Taki, your channel expresses my love for niche and interesting handheld gaming devices so perfectly. I never click on videos so consistently and watch the entire thing so consistently.
    Straight banger content man, keep it up!
    Edit:
    I have had an idea for a while that this device would be the perfect fit for. Years ago I went to a VR attraction in a warehouse where I live and it was amazing, but the way they handled you being able to move around the warehouse was to use a kind of backpack gaming PC (which I assume was a gaming laptop with extra ventilation and a big battery bank). My idea is simply to use something like I just described, but much more inconspicuous. Like a sleeper gaming laptop with ventilation and a big battery bank in a black backpack, using this device to access it.
    All you would have to do is carry around the backpack, almost like a gaming hub and this device is the portal. Just an idea, but since you have access to stuff like this, maybe you would be interested in trying something like that.

    As an oled owner I'm not satisfied with the screen size and the weight is too heavy. I think they should try for something in the 8-10 inch size screen next time. I legitimately don't like playing modern games on a screen this small. As for the weight, it's too heavy to comfortably hold for long gaming sessions. It's triple the weight of a GBA. Remember the difference in weight between the PsP and the PsP 2000? It's clearly design choice, not inability to make it lighter.
