I've also broken 2 vertebraes last year and the doctor's said maybe I could never walk again... You can't imagine how that feels being told. After 5 months of rehab and hard work I was able to ride bikes again and that was the best feeling ever! Much respect for getting back this strong man!👏
My brother got paralyzed back in 09 and I know the struggles he faced, I was his full time care giver for the entire journey. Hats off to you Brooke for having the determination to not only learn how literally learn all motor skills back, but having the fortitude to get back on the bike so soon!! #Determination #RipJstreet417
I did pretty much this exact injury racing crankworks Whistler 2011. The rods were left in my back but now 10 years later they give me daily pain and it’s getting to the point where I can’t lift anything without bad pain for 3 days after. After watching this I’m booking in with my doctor and seeing if I can get consultations to get them out. Thanks 🙏 and remember even the longest racers careers are only half your lifespan, you’ve still got to live through what’s after...
Brook, your story is inspiring. Ive had 2 spinal fusion surgeries and I love my mountain bike. I'm not anywhere near a competitive rider, I just ride some local trails but the surgeries are always in the back of my mind thinking anytime i wreck could cause real damage and i think it holds me back. Watching this gives me motivation. Thank you for not quitting and going forward you are truly a legend among mtb'ers.
Thanks from Germany. This video will give a lot of people more confidence after a crash. I had a bad motorcycle accident a few years ago. So this clip reminds me a lot. And you can't thank your fiance enough. Wonderful story. Never give up!
U r a great inspiration sir. I wish I could meet u one day. I once falled down from a small hill which luckly haven't injured me physically but my parents after that hurt me the most mentally. I was out of motivation but now all thanx to u now no matter what I will ride. No matters if I have to leave my parents but then also I will ride.
What an amazing story, I raced DH in the 80's and 90's and one of my best friends who was also a Pro DH racer had a crash and was paralyzed from the waist down. He lived to ride like all of us do and never was able to recover. So happy to see Brook back in the saddle!
Thank you for sharing this. I was reading all the comments about "determination" and " encouraging people to never give up" thinking, sometimes it's not possible to walk again! No matter how determined or how much perseverance someone has. I'm so relieved for Brook he was able to recover and that his spinal cord was compressed, not severed. He is clearly a legend, and yes so inspiring. But I would also like the general public to know that not every spinal cord injury can be rehabilitated to gain feeling or movement back! (it's literally impossible to walk again if a spinal cord is so smashed there's a whole section missing...) I'm very sorry for your friend's accident.
Shout out Brooke for your incredible determination and dedication in this recovery process. Seeing you competing at an international level only few months after being barely able to put on foot in front of another is just amazing. It is just great to see the amount of support from your team and relatives. Thank you for having shared this story with us, I wish you the best rides for this season !!
Incredible that the only person who didn't talk about his confidence coming back into a race weekend is Brook. Never a second thought about an accident reoccurring. Amazing strength. What a legend
It was a massive privilege to have an amazing insight of a determined rider and his awesome support from loved ones and fellow professional riders. Inspirational is often used but this is on another scale.
Gladly, this extraordinary amount of luck is granted to one of the most extraordinarily tough and deserving people. His set will and strong mindset are a true inspiration
Just saw you yesterday in Italy (Viola St Gree) and you were so great! Very inspiring, my husband followed your story and I had no idea what you’ve been through, my compliments. You are a true champion! PS next time someone asks if you are WORLDWIDE famous, just say YES! 😀👊🏻
You and Cathro gave me so much inspiration during my recovery and the dark days. A broken spine does not have to destroy your life, some of us are lucky and through hard work and time we can recover. I was lucky, had a similar break but with no spinal cord pressure, that must have been terrifying?
I had an accident dh riding with some friends the day this came out. I had to get a metal plate and some screws in my arm to hold my bone in place. It sucks that I am out for the rest of the season but this makes me want to comeback stronger and better. Brook Macdonald is a legend.
2006 .. I pile drive into the reef headfirst, splitting 7" of scalp open, compressing upper thoracic n most cervical vertibrae and knocking my cervical way out of alignment. My cervical curve is reversed starting at C-6. The arm nerves radiate out from the top of C-5 and are pinched significantly. Problems arose in 2016. This last winter I lost a large degree of the use of both hands and all fingers. This, after having a phenomenal season on my Banshee Rune, pushing my downhill and jump skills here in Hood River, Oregon. I'm 57 but had surfed The North Shore all my life, being born on Oahu. This had kept me going strong but after loosing the last head-butting contest, I focused all on my second greatest love .. the mountain bike. Not being able to work has made everything next to impossible but am lucky to have health care thru Oregon state. It is married to big pharma and frequently wants to address the symptoms and not the root issue. The first thing they did was send me to a spine surgeon specialist .. to screen me for fusing my vertebrae .. !?? I told em to go climb inside a cement mixer with a bunch of super old nitroglycerine .. Being off my beloved Banshee has just made me want to .. .. scream !!!! Not being able to don my gear and go take my agressions out on the mountainside has been far beyond devastating. Watching your story Brook, has helped me remotivate .. TO .. FIND .. A .. WAY .. to have my vertebrae straightened .. AND RIDE N JUMP AGAIN !!!!! Peace, aloha n GODSPEED !! Ride Jump or Wither !! Jeriatic Jump Club !!
Estou me recuperando de uma cirurgia e assistir a este vídeo não só me emocionou como me dá mais motivação para voltar o mais rápido possível para a bike! ✨
Travis Pastrana went through a very similar thing when he was like 15 (weeks before the 1st X-Games FMX competition). He was on a wheelchair for a whole week (he had the mother of all cases, he came up short and basically landed on the wrong side of a jump) and then he had to regain the feeling and all before X-Games.
I ve pee in my eyes when is see bulldog lost his passion for just a moment and how strong he has work on himself to dont lost it forever. Great athlet and great wife!
I had an accident a month ago. Broken left elbow, left leg needed a surgery. Lucky, my spine was ok. Day split between bed and wheelchair, only light exercises allowed. Muscle fade is staggering. On my way back up. Long road ahead. And that's an uplifting video.
He gets unsettled right before the landing (they talked about a root), which makes him fly very awkwardly and basically cannonball into the ground further below.
Amazing to see the recovery come so fast!
good to see you sending it Brook.
I've also broken 2 vertebraes last year and the doctor's said maybe I could never walk again... You can't imagine how that feels being told. After 5 months of rehab and hard work I was able to ride bikes again and that was the best feeling ever!
Much respect for getting back this strong man!👏
Brook, honestly best comeback ever, followed some of your journey on strava, next race you can go for the win, I am rooting for you.
Yes this is like the Scotty Cramer come back story I bet they could be very good friends and could relate a lot
Brook you're a legend and an inspiration. And I hope every rider can find a fiance like Lucy because her support was just amazing.
My brother got paralyzed back in 09 and I know the struggles he faced, I was his full time care giver for the entire journey. Hats off to you Brooke for having the determination to not only learn how literally learn all motor skills back, but having the fortitude to get back on the bike so soon!!

The man was paralytic, and 10 months after was riding Downhill again. Unbelievable.
that's what determination looks like 🔥

@@RedBullBike Yes and a lot of luck. No determination will help when the injury is just a bit worse.

Humongous effort and determination by Brook, and his partner! Brook: Please wear some armour for Downhill - especially a back protector.
Flawless video, congratulations guys 👏👏👏😎👍

Brooks the MAN! Such determination, the BULLDOG has to be a contender for the G.O.A.T. Legend 😎🤘👊

Hey man, healing vibes from all of us, we're glad this gave you some motivation! 💪 You got this! 🤘
I wished they showed and talked more about the crash and how brutal it was. Then to see the comeback.
He gets unsettled right before the landing (they talked about a root), which makes him fly very awkwardly and basically cannonball into the ground further below.
Best comeback ever!
Good bless him
Doctors: He might not walk again.
Brook: Hold my bike.
Wow. That’s impressive.
Vídeo impecável, meus parabéns Galera 👏👏👏😎👍
Respect 💯👊✌️
CRYING, LITERALLY !
