Thanks for the video. Are you able to describe or demonstaret on the practice logs as to where the measurement comes from that is the distance on the marking point ( pencil) and the tip of the scribe? Where does that width measurement come from? Is it half of the diameter of the lower log?
Thanks for your support! We set our scribes so that the belly is a minimum of 3 inches wide at the narrowest point along the belly groove. Prior to scribing, find the widest gap between the two logs and then open your scribes to ensure that you have a minimum of 1 and 1/2 inches either side of center line.

Hi Dave and you guys ROCK!!!Also I had to sub!!One question?So after you scribe the top do you also scribe the bottom?Or do you only cut the top board?Im obviously a novice,Well not even,But I’m bout to buy a jig and try my hand at building a log home,I have a double wide,But it took some damage in a storm right after our world caved in(my 3 children’s mother has been gone almost 8 years)and I really brought a lot on myself,But I want to redo our house,But dream of a log house so I will hopefully learn from all your awesome tutorials,I know TMI,But this all seems so foreign anyways as far as starting over I mean I’m sure it does to everyone!!!Wish I lived in an area that produced the gorgeous wood you guys work with,Anyways thank you so much for teaching such a beautiful craft!!!

@@TJ_ONLY the scribe setting size is determined by the widest gap between the two logs prior to scribing and the location for the fixed pt is controlled by maintaining the dble bubble level in the level location. With scribes held level in both orientations there is only one place that the pointer and pencil can land.
That would be the point of the dble bubble. Using the same setting on the other side, If you keep the dble bubble level, you’ll automatically be at the proper location.

ok... butt ... what if i dont have a scribe? ,,, could i not just use a scrap 2x4 and add a pencil to 1 corner and a punch to the other corner. then add a round bubble to the flat of the 2x4 to accomplish the same thing? $200 - $700 for a scribe seems dumb. just saying ;)
OK, so you've calibrated the scribe again so its now set for that width ....... Now why or what would be the reason to ever change the width on the scribe? Why would you not just "pick" a width or gap for the scribe and weld it shut so it's constant for the entire log process? I don't understand the relationship between what you end up with for a cut or the joining of the logs and how any of it is effected by the width or gab between the pencil and the other fixed end of the scribe tip? Why would it change? I'm sorta guessing/assuming that further apart or the wider gap is on the scribe uses up more log? So if the gab between the pencil and scribe tip is small or narrow you don't cut away a lot of the upper logs bottom joint so the joinery is small, like a round figure 8. (two stacked circles) Whereas if the gap on the scribe is bigger, and the pencil tip and the scribe point are further apart - that would make you remove more material from the upper log so the joint is wider across the two logs and you do take out more material from the bottom side of the upper log? The logs are “nested” more together? It’s kind of hard to describe what I’m trying to ask !!
I think it just depends on the size of the logs. When they are thicker, sometimes there will be a larger gap in the middle, which would require you to open the scribe more. Ideally, the scribe would not be very wide? Maybe that is wrong.
I believe you are correct. Although the gadget is also used for scribing the Saddle Notch. And for every NEW log the starting gap is bound to be different than the previous setting on the previous log. That is when you have to adjust and recalibrate the gadget on the board.

did you level the log on top with the little pieces of wood so your scribe line would be accurate
In reality we would rough notch the full length logs prior to scribing which equalizes the gap between the bellies.

We scribe both sides of the logs as well as a cup on the end grain of the log.

Some scribes have bullseye levels on them but we prefer the response of two separate bubbles.
