Mahesh Das was a young man living in a small village in North India. He was very intelligent. Once when Emperor Akbar along with is soldiers got lost in finding the right way to Agra, Akbar's kingdom capital, Mahesh Das showed him the way. Akbar was impressed by his wit. He asked him to come to his royal court and gifted him a precious ring as a memoir. After finishing his studies Mahesh went to Agra to meet Akbar. The guard at the palace gate stopped him but let him in when Mahesh showed him the Emperor's ring. He also made him promise to share half of the gift that he would get from Akbar. Mahesh was welcomed by Akbar and on asking what he wished for, Mahesh asked for fifty lashes. A surprised Akbar asked him the reason behind this wish. Mahesh said that he had to share the gift with the guard so would prefer to get twenty five whiplashes and get the guard to get the other twenty five. On knowing that his guard had asked for a bribe, the furious emperor ordered all the fifty whiplashes for the guard and rewarded Mahesh. He also gave him a place at the royal court and named him Raja Birbal.
