  • Serdica, an ancient city, founded around 2000 BC by the Thracian Serde people, was an important city in Roman times, valued for its strategic location and hot springs.
Due to its squinting situation, it was invaded and destroyed by the various peoples who conquered Dacia, and was always rebuilt under the previous ruins.
In 1367, after several invasions and empires that established themselves there, it adopted the name Sofia in honor of the Christian Martyr. The new city completely erased the old city and it was only in the 20th century, after excavations in the center of Sofia, that the ruins of the important city of Serdica were uncovered.
