The problem is the uncontrolled use of SF6. Many industries and energy company have leaks in the equipment and they don´t want to outage the system to fix that, so the leak keeps releasing SF6 to atmosphere for years.

SF6 is going to serve in existing HV switchgear for a long time. Only new built facilities are going to use alternatives. VCB for EHV level is more problematic in practice regarding switching overvoltage level

Currently, the sf6 free technology is expensive (very expensive). But it is anticipated as more production happens and localization happens, the cost will go down..
