Nope, not really. These are an easy 275 hp. with some simple mods that are all over the 2.3 sites. What it needs is a transmission swap to a T5 or AOD using an adapter. 3 speeds doesn't get it especially when they put 3.73 gears in the back. Has to scream going down the highway. 87/88 had a light duty 4 sp. auto but they had to cut the power for it to survive.
@@rondye9398 I used to own a 1986 Turbo Coupe. Not as fast as a Mustang, but still a lot of fun to drive (even with the three speed auto). When that turbo kicked in, you could really feel it pull you back into the seat. Pretty sure the '83 thru '86 version was sold without an intercooler, so it made somewhere around 150hp. Like you said, the '87 to "88 version with the 4 spd auto had the same lower power rating, but if you got it with the manual (plus intercooler), I think it made more like 190hp (closer to the specs on the Mustang SVO).

Salvatore Casto Ford didn’t put dual exhaust on the Turbo Coupes until 87. Even then it was only for the 5-speed.
