I can't for the life of me fathom why you're not the brightest star in the BookTube firmament. Your knowledge, charisma and endearing style warrants you ought to be. But when it comes to unduly unsung book-folk, I feel the same way about Iain Pears, William Hazlitt, Edward Gibbon and (Jacobean playwright) Thomas Middleton, so you're in good company. Every single one of your book recommendations (or rather inspiring mini-lectures) in every single video is a gem - whether they prompt a reread or a new bookish encounter. Thank you so much!

Oh, what a fantastic book haul. Starting with "Cold Comfort Farm", it's so brilliant and so funny (an efficient young modern woman finding herself in the middle of a Breugel and setting about sorting everyone out) that we just accept and love it, but when it was first published in the 1930s it was such a bombshell that a lot of people (Evelyn Waugh for instance) simply didn't believe it could be a first novel, and Stella Gibbons herself felt it overshadowed all she wrote later. Skipping to Daphne du Maurier, I would love you to do an entire video about her work, because her range and her ability to terrify was astounding. "Frenchman's Creek" was very well written, but "Rebecca" was amazing (and re the comment about the television version starring Charles Dance, Diana Rigg, etc. - there was an earlier television version starring Jeremy Brett as Maxim and Joanna David as the girl which was so riveting I cannot understand why no tape or dvd of it was ever made available). But it is du Maurier's short stories that are truly incredible - "The Birds", made into a film by Hitchcock, but also "Don't Look Now"! Who in Heaven's name would have thought she could have written that - yet everything but the first death, of the little girl, is in that short story. I absolutely love your videos, and thank you so much for them.

Hi Tristan, I only recently discovered your channel. I love your passion for books and your intelligent, sensitive reviews. Here in Australia, we call charity shops “op shops” (opportunity shops), where I’ve bought many brilliant books, including most of Daphne Du Maurier, who I discovered about 30 years ago. I still have them as I loved her work - the novels and Not After Midnight, a book of short stories, one of which is called Don’t Look Now - this story chilled me to the bone. I’d love to see you do a Daphne du Maurier video. Thank you, Theresa

Again, you're talking about some of my favorite books. Never Let Me Go (and Remains of the Day) are incredible. Frenchman's Creek sounds fascinating. I recently read The King's General by her, set just decades before the Restoration, so FC would be a nice follow-up.

I have given up going into charity shops; too many books piling up to be read.
Now, once a week I go into a proper book shop and buy 1 book, and damn-well read it, it makes me appreciate them more.

Would've liked to have heard more about which charity shop, photo of it maybe, and what took you in there. I often shop in charity places myself. Much admire you reading the first para of the books, which can be key to whether or not I buy. Also liking the focus on classics, also love a good cover. Do love a good haul though... watch several booktubers, hope to catch you again 🙂🤔

Fun to imagine exactly what was the "something nasty in the wood shed," might have been, as well as I remember we never find out. I loved Cold Comfort Farm and I loved Frenchman's Creek. I read The Warden last October and I'll read Barchester Towers next October, i'll read another Gaskell also in October. Never Let Me Go is my favorite by him, Buried Giants, my least favorite by him. Oops, I forgot Klara and the Sun, that's my most favorite, what a great writer.

However, Daphne du Maurier is one of my favorite authors and she does tell the story well. I have Cold Comfort Farm, so I need to get to that one and I plan on reading Barchester Towers this fall. Yes, I love the classics and your channel! Thanks!

I have read a few Ishiguro's works. I was both attracted and displeased with them. I cannot quite point out what it was that displeased me, probably my own emotions that were hard to bear, because those books touch a little bit too deep. That would make me reaction a pro rather than a con, would it not... However I would very much like to hear your deep review of this one. And I am most curious, how did you react, when you actually realised, what "donor" mean... I remember how I reacted and I believe that feeling will stay with me forever.

Barchester Towers is my favorite in the series so far. Never Let me Go is a great read, but I haven't read Remains of Day yet. I have the adaptation with Anthony Hopkins, though. It often happens to me that I come across the adaptation first, but the past few years I have tried not to do that as much, because, depending on the adaptation, it can make me less inclined to read the book if I have watched the adaptation first. I just went to Barnes and Noble, a chain bookstore in America, where I bought Dostoyevsky's Demons in an edition that only that bookstore sells. I had to choose between that one and a certain edition of MacBeth, because I'm trying to stick to a budget and I was more interested in Demons at the moment.
