NPC's who've seen you do something bad will remember what you've done, because they'll treat you differently. They say 'We don't want anymore trouble from you, ok?' or something similar.
The brutality is crazy to me but how realistic the npcs behaviors were actually made me think these npcs were in literal pain. Especially the part where the npcs were playing poker and the guy on the door was still alive while pushing his legs to get up and away from Arthur.

The way Arthur threw the knife at the the head of the NPC in the beginning and just walked away like it was nothing... That was so brutal and cold. It looks like one of those executions made by Anton Chigurr in No Country for Old Man.
