  • The highway from Darwin to Perth in the Kimberley region in Western Australia was closed for 24 hours when the road flooded in January 2017. This compilation is of some of those big rigs that were waiting to cross when the river dropped (as well as some other footage of earlier in the wet season).

As an American Trucker at 60, I am getting to see what you have to do to try to take care of the needs of the people in the cities that are not connected by trains.
3 full trailers as the normal are unique all unto itself. Congrats to all that you do. Job well done. You don't see Swift type of nonsense down under. Real truckers that mean what they do.

Fuel tanks are approximately 400 to 450 litres each. 4 of them gives a range of Brisbane to Melbourne return with half fuel left or approximately 3800 kms

Jake D nope! those trucks are specially made of Australia with stronger chasis , more drive axels, more engine horsepower , better water proofing , better gears, right hand drive and the most important thing they have huge fuel tanks because they won't sea a fuel station in few thousand km so it is better to have more!

trucks can go through deeper water. The family in a smaller 4 x 4 can't. Also we have a law that "if it's flooded don't risk it. What looks very slow moving on top is extremely fast underneath. The population is so sparse that if you break down you die. Simple unlike normal times when help may come. Phone service absolutely non existent. There are roads that are so long and lonely you can drive for a couple of days without coming across another vehicle. These videos are made using the highway system. Off highways you are on your own.

I drive a car and it happens to be a 4wd Toyota.

Missing from this video is thsee professional truckies testing the water depth beforehand - which is done on foot or knowing that stretch of road and knowing first hand the depth of the flood. If I had my time again, I'd progress to being a road train driver.
