Dual Mode TBM Margherita: ready to bore Cefalù Tunnel

Work begins on the Cefalù twin-tube tunnel on the Cefalù - Castelbuono railway section, in Sicily. A work worth over 370 million euro contracted by RFI to Toto Costruzioni Generali. To excavate and line the 13,4 km of the tunnel, Toto will use a 10-metre diameter TBM, weighting 1650 tonnes and with total installed power of 5.6 MW. To cope with the complex geology of the Madonie, the TBM has been designed with a dual mode, and use the EPB (Earth Pressure Balance) mode to excavate in the most subsiding soils.
