Vegan Cuban Pastelitos: Meatless & Guava Con Queso

    What’s Up! Welcome to my channel! In today’s video I am showing you how I make Vegan Pastelitos de “carne” y guayaba y queso. The “carne” one is a meatless filling and the other one is Guava and Cheese. If you like this video please hit the like button and please subscribe if you haven’t already! Recipe listed below.
    Ingredients:
    Picadillo (recipe below)
    Simple Syrup
    • 1/4 cup water
    • 1/4 cup sugar
    Eggless Wash
    • ¼ cup Just eggs
    Puff Pastry
    • 2 packages vegan puff pastry
    Ingredients for Picadillo (meatless filling)
    • 2 tablespoons olive oil
    • 1/2 cup diced onion
    • 1/2 cup diced red pepper
    • 3-4 cloves garlic minced
    • 1 habanero (optional) (I removed most of the seeds)
    • 1 package of meatless crumbles
    • ¼ cup of sofrito
    • 3 ounces tomato sauce
    • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
    • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
    • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
    • 1 teaspoon onion powder
    • 1 teaspoon Mrs. Dash (add any seasonings you like. Make it your own).
    • Salt and pepper to taste (start with 1/4 teaspoon then adjust from there)
    • 1/4 cup Spanish olives cut in half or chopped
    • 2 tablespoons raisins (optional. I did not use raisins in my recipe)
    Instructions:
    1. In a large pan, heat oil over medium heat. Add onions and red peppers and, sauté for 2-3 minutes or until softened. Add garlic and habanero (if using) and sauté for 30 seconds.
    2. Next, add meatless crumbles and cook, about 2 minutes. Reduce the heat down to medium-low
    3. Stir in sofrito, tomato sauce, and seasonings Simmer for 5 minutes until fragrant. Taste and add more seasonings if needed.
    4. Remove from the heat. Stir in olives and raisins (if using).
    Make the simple syrup. In a small saucepan stir sugar and water together. Bring to a boil then reduce heat to low to simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool. Set aside.
    1. Thaw the puff pastry according to package directions. Keep in fridge until ready to use. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
    2. Preheat oven to 400ºF.
    3. Unfold 1 pastry sheet and cut into circles using the rim of a glass cup or a biscuit cutter. (keep 2nd pastry sheet in fridge until ready to use).
    4. Place a tablespoon of the picadillo filling in the center of each dough circle. Cover with another dough circle on top.
    5. Gently seal the edges of the dough circles together using a fork or by pressing down with your fingers. Brush wash on each pastry to get that golden crust. Poke a couple of holes with a toothpick.
    6. If you want flakier pastries put in fridge for 10 minutes then put in oven.
    7. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
    8. Remove the pastries from the oven and lightly brush the pastries with simple syrup. Serve immediately and enjoy!
    GUAVA & CHEESE
    INGREDIENTS
    2 packages vegan puff pastry (can find at most grocery stores)
    1 package vegan cream cheese
    1 package guava paste
    2 TBS sugar (optional)
    Wash (2 Tbs. Just egg or 2 Tbs. plant milk mixed with 1 teaspoon of agave or maple syrup)
    Simple Syrup: In a small saucepan stir sugar and water together. Bring to a boil then reduce heat to low to simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool. Set aside.
    1. Thaw the puff pastry according to package directions. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
    2. Preheat oven to 400ºF.
    3. Cut the guava paste and Mix vegan cream cheese with sugar.
    4. Unfold 1 pastry sheet and cut into rectangles. (make sure pastry is cold) (keep 2nd sheet in refrigerator).
    5. Spread the vegan cream cheese evenly.
    6. Add about 3 slices of guava paste on each rectangle.
    7. Unfold the 2nd pastry sheet and cut into rectangles and place on top of the guava & cheese.
    8. Gently seal the edges of the dough together using a fork or by pressing down with your fingers.
    9. Lightly score the tops of the pastries with a knife to allow steam to escape while baking.
    10. Brush wash on each pastry to get that golden crust. If you want flakier pastry put in fridge for 10 minutes then put in oven. (the colder the pastry the flakier it will come out)
    11. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
    12. Remove the pastries from the oven and lightly brush the pastries with simple syrup. Serve immediately and enjoy!
