- The old bubble-canopy helicopters used by the U.S. Army. Probably a H-13 Sioux helicopter like the ones used in M*A*S*H for med-evac. Learning to fly a helicopter. Earning your wings.

I flew with Doug ( 2nd FFA cert. Helicopter pilot) Panama City Beach, Fl in1968
What a thrill it was in the old bubble top!
Such a relaxed instructor, he even lets you hit the tail a little bit at 0:59 :)))
Suuuuch a cool chopper, these Bell 47's (in civilian parlance) were featured in countless movies and TV shows I saw as a kid. I love that part when the instructor steps out, "Well, you're ready, why don't take it around!" "Ya, Ya th-think I'm ready, sir???" "Sure!!!" That was verbatim my 152 solo flight!
I never had an instructor who folded his arms while I was flying. You never forget your first solo, I've done it in an airplane, seaplane, glider AND a helicopter.
Love these , made by Bell , Whirlybirds , tv series from the 50 , s 60 s , happy days
quite a flying wing awarded at the end
The way the narrator introduced that massive insignia near the end was funny; it was almost sarcastic.
First the Robinson R22, then the Schweitzer’s: H269 (Early trainer), then the 300’s. That was back in the day I got my Private certificate. ‘04-‘05. Never a better, more enjoyable accomplishment. Miss it still..
i did my instrument training in one of these at rucker....class 71-49....and then on to hueys...
All that time in instrument training and you didn't get qualified in that model.
Yup, that's an H-13. The helicopter's stenciled identification markings visible at 0:37 show that it's an H-13E. Incidentally that dates this movie to before the 1962 change in designation systems.
The Bell 47. The Army called it the H-13 Sioux. Lol I liked the exaggerated wings.
Its a Bell model 47 or H-13 helicopter was used in Korea and was in the TV show M*A*S*H* mobile army surgical hospital. some do fly but very slow for police use today for pursuits with fast cars and motorcycles exceeding 120 mph. many people have them and fly them ocasionally for certian amount of hours. some are on static display but makes that classic chopper sound from the main rotor.
BTW candidate Kingston - your life expectancy is weeks - god luck you've earned your wings! LOLOLOLL What propaganda! Love it!
I remember seeing this. I think it was in a UH-1 Huey training film.
I remember my first solo in a 47 at 13 hrs. The scariest flight of my training. When landing I ran out of foot rudder a bit and the instructor heard my mistake from the ground. I was over torqueing the engine juuuust a bit. After that all flights were a piece of cake.
How on earth did they provide instruction without wearing headsets….? The noise of the flat six screaming away just 18” behind your ears has to be heard to be believed, and then there’s the transmission, the cooling fan and the rotors all adding to the cacophony! Don’t get me wrong, I loved flying the 47 but it’s not a quiet experience!
Till you fly one of these with the Franklin engine, you don't realize how good the pilots in the Korean war were. Under powered at seal level, it took some real skill to pick up two wounded in mountainous terrain and even get off the ground. A good helicopter but due to the engines limitations, not the the easiest machine to fly.
nice how the instructor had his arms folded while the tail is hitting the ground.
Back in the early ‘50s the army didn’t swawk too much it you flew it home and gave your family members rides, according to our first battalion tac officer at North Georgia College who had been a warrant officer pilot and who flew to his home in the Ozarks and did just that. It all ended when such a joyride in a crate that was about five hours past time for an overhaul crashed and the lawsuit cost the army a bundle.
tort reform
My solo flight was in a Huey!
I would re-title this video: US Army H-13 (Bell 47) Helicopter Training Film.
This type helicopter s used by srilankan airforce 50 years ago and still can be seen in air force museum of srilanka
I remember my first helicopter solo...
Dear future WOBC classes, I feel your pain.
So that’s how you got your ppl
No helmets, no hearing protection, short-sleeved shirt, and no gloves.
...and wearing ball caps!
no nomex, velcro seat belts!
No Bath.?????
👌👌👌
If the winning lottery ticket ever blows up against my pant leg, I’m going to buy a 47 and have the army helo pilot husband of my daughter’s best friend in their teen years, teach me to fly it.
