You are the second person I have seen mention spraying down the boil to prevent the boil over...as someone who boils 6.5 gal in an 8 gal kettle, it's a life saver!!!
Ha! The pitcher I have was from a Yuengling Oktoberfest in Bethlehem PA the year before I started homebrewing, have used it more than any other tool in my brewery!
Towels! I wash mine separately from regular clothes and I don't use dryer sheets. That way they're more absorbent and don't leave waxy streaks on my equipment. I also love bus tubs like the 15 x 20 Cambro. They catch drips, hold ice and spent grain, and make great sanitizing stations for spoons and other long items.
In the winter time, my hands dry out anyway. Having some long gloves for whenever I am using cleaning products (PWB, TSP etc etc) I find it saves my hands from drying out even further. Good gloves are key. Great video Brian with useful tips. Cheers! -Mike
Dang, those were some useful tips that we'll have to start incorporating (especially that Star San syringe trick). I like to keep a spray bottle of star san PLUS a spray bottle of isopropyl alcohol. The alcohol is probably the most effective and instantaneous sanitizer. Another general tip is get everything done the night before! Crush grain, collect water, put everything together. Then brewday is a breeze!
Pitcher is great idea. I used 2quart pitcher and just recently bought an 1gal pitcher. My pitchers are graduated “ Scientific” found the graduating is accurate. Like your idea of wiping down the pots of hot break will need to use that.
All good tips. I practice most of them. I'll throw out one which may seem obvious, and might could have been combo'd with the pitcher, but you never seem to have enough of: BUCKETS. I have a couple large 6 gallon buckets, several 4 & 2 gallon buckets, and a few 1 gallons as well. Used for mixing sanitizer, catching wort during the brew day, containing parts and fittings on fermenters when disassembling, throwing used brewday items in for later cleaning, blowoff buckets, etc. The list goes on and on. You can never have enough of them. They're all food grade purchased from big box home center.
Good stuff. I love those binder clips here too. I use them to also hang hoses to drip dry. I also whip up small batches of Starsan and keep a spray bottle around for various uses including sanitizing cooking surfaces and utensils.
I liked the starsan tip... I do 2.5 gal batches only because of not wanting to do math for smaller batches. I'll start using 1 gal and still have some leftover for spray bottle. 😁👍
I love my 1 pitcher. Most underrated brew tool. I have the Rubbermaid one that has the graduations on it. The caps from 2L Coke bottles are great to replace the ones on Starsan containers when they crack.
You mentioned grain storage. A great source for air tight, food safe buckets is the local bakery. Mine gets fillings and frostings in 3.5 gallon buckets that they sell for $2 each. Another nice thing about the size is each is perfect for a single brew day. I can order ingredients for 2 or 3 brews at a time to qualify for free shipping and then on brew day, I’ve got everything ready to go And I’m keeping stuff out of the landfill…
Great tips. I smiled at each one because I’ve been using them as well. Also I find the velcro strips for cable and hose management very useful for both brew day and put away and storage of hoses and cables. Thanks for another great video.
Pitchers seem to last forever! I've still got the metal pitcher I bought from Northern Brewer ~10 years ago. It was in great condition until I accidentally got some starsan in the bottom. I'll likely keep it until the handle falls off, but still find a new use for it... I love good storage! I've got clear tacklebox trays for all my little parts. One for brew day and one for everything else. My housemates appreciated it when I got a dish tray and a matching dish dry rack. That way I can dry my equipment somewhere other than in the kitchen rack and free up space for everyone else.
I use butyl rubber gloves to remove the brew bag and “poke” the bottom corners in where the seam is. I found when I lift the bag out of the kettle, the mash will pour out the corners and all over the kitchen stove. Use a round brew bag without corners or buy cheap amazon bags at 1/10th of the price and poke your bag corners in. Just a suggestion if you buy square brew bags.
I like to have small high powered flashlights, I have fenix narrow beam 5 stages of intensity and a very wide beam unit with magnetic sides and bottom. Use them during brewing but mostly checking connections and looking for minor problems in the system .
I have a mash tun keggle. The lower tube comes in then does a 90degree bend. The false bottom is held in place by this tube. If I make a double batch or a big beer, the weight of the mash makes this fall and the tube gets full of wort and grain. I bought four stainless steel pot scrubbers at my local brew shop and put them under the false bottom and now it doesn't collapse. I had also thought about buying a cheap stainless steel socket to help, but the scrubbers were enough.
I wish you’d released this yesterday, wiping down the boil is such a good idea. I did a brew today and that layer of protein is firmly stuck to the kettle. I was looking at it as it was boiling away and thinking that’s going to be a pain to clean. Take care Brian.
Great tips, thanks! Another one I came across recently is to use magnets to suspend a bag of hops in a fermenter, one in the bag, and one outside the fermenter so that when you're ready to dry hop, you just remove or slide the magnet on the outside to immerse the hops. Haven't tried it myself yet, but probably will next brew.
Saw a variation on that recently. Cut off the bottom of a PET bottle and fix to the inside of the FV with bar magnets. Put the hops in the cut off PET bottle and when dry hopping simple swivel the outside magnet to release the hops. Means the hops potentially get better contact with the beer as they are not confined to a hop bag. Works best in a plastic see through FV so you know it's worked!
Awesome tips, I would add to use RO or Distilled water when making the starsan mixer, it will stay good longer than needed. I used to use tap water and then I would get a white residue on the bottom of spray bottles and on items if left for a few days. After using RO water now, it stays clear and fresh longer than it takes to use it all.
Definitely agree about 1 gallon pitcher of star san. Holds my long SS spoon I use to stir after I get down to pitching temps to get the trub cone to form. Usually also pour off a smaller portion into a small glass to put my thermometer in too as I don’t have a thermowell or weldless thermometer in my kettle. Suprised you didn’t include a pulley in your list for lifting baskets/bags.
Great tips just started on the clamps a few brews ago, they are like a third or fourth hand! Love the gallon pitcher suggestion I will look for that for my next brew day!
Good stuff Brian as always! I'll add hanging hoses to dry, and I like to keep a 5 gallon bucket of starsan... makes it easy to dunk hoses, dump a gallon or so in your fermenter etc. Its nice to have a large amount on hand during brew day.
Good tips for sure. I’ve been using the spray bottle of Starsan for a long time but have always only kept it for a week. Glad to know it will last longer. I use clips on my sight gauges to mark wort level in my boil kettle. I can mark it when I do my calculations and know exactly how much to collect and what my post-boil volume should be. . I also mark the level needed to cover the boil coil using a red clip. It’s an easy visual when brewing a small batch so I keep the coil covered.
I have a spare keg that I keep sanitizer in. I have a bad back, so using co2 to move liquids around helps me a lot. I saw a tip in the comments about using RO/distilled to make up starsan with, will do that next time I need to mix up a batch. That may be a while mind you...
This might not be much of a hack, but I put together a 3" capped PVC pipe to clean and sanitize long items... things like racking canes or in my case, barrel bulldog and bottling equipment. It is 3' long and only needs one gallon to completely immerse. You can also cap (screw) the other end and shake it vigorously.
Great tips Brian! I had to laugh, I've been using the exact same plastic pitcher for years and it's served me well. I still need a 5 gallon+ batch of Star San to use for purging my corny keg with CO2 when preparing closed loop transfers from my Spike conicals. But the spray bottle comes in real handy for most other sanitation jobs for sure. I enjoy all of your videos - the EasyDens is phenomenal! That was a great tip!
Awesome glad you enjoyed.. one money saving tip I use on the purging of the kegs is I will use the spray bottle to sanitize the keg and then use a very mild solution of stars and water that I push out of the keg. I mean probably about a 25% dosing solution compared to a normal full 5 gallons. To me you don't have to have a full strength solution as long as you're pushing it out immediately and it's not sitting in the keg. I've done that for years and never had any sanitization issues. 👍🍻
Great stuff! For those of us without peg boards or drawers to store various fittings, I have found the DeWalt TSTAK tool organizers with removable compartments to be perfect. I keep all my TC stuff in one and all my other various fittings in another.
Turkey baster. Multiple uses in and outside of brewing. Ummm... I've got a separate one for the "other stuff". Although they are incredibly easy to clean and sterilise.
@@ShortCircuitedBrewers Glad to hear that Brian. I was getting a bit concerned as well. BTY I am also super busy and haven't made a video in a couple moths either so I shouldn't talk. Cheers!

Good practical list of handy items. Are the white towels that you use made from microfiche material? I usually have one with distilled water and one with sanitiser (ethanol or starsan) I may invest in some clamps. I normally use wires or cable ties. Cheers Brian From downunder

Hi Brian, hope all is well. Are you still brewing? Have you moved to a different platform? I am sure I speak for all home brewers when I say, we miss you and your videos. Cheers.
You need to hang them up to dry first. Something like this: amzn.to/3vc20O6 once dry I use something like this amzn.to/41SQiEp I generally go to one of the big box stores and get one for about $5. 👍🍻
When sparge grains, have a magnet on the inside as well as the outside, to see the level of word. The grain basket often block the view so it is hard to see the level.
Hope all is well. You're missed bud, from waaay over in the west of Ireland.
