Don't know how many Hasselblad & other TLR leaf shutter guys ever screwed up. If shutter speed is shorter than (full) power flash duration, u r UNDER. Many a studio flash had a max power flash duration long by today's "standards". The Metz CT4 ( ?) handle flash, which I never owned, had a "long" duration of 1/300 sec at full power. Hassels Saved by Polaroid backs? Life is EASY these days! When you were provided w/ ISO 100 FILM, the cheapest, to shoot events, life could be nerve racking. Ambient expo f/4 (for depth & lens ) 1/30 sec@ISO100. That's it, no other way. Knocking shutter either way, u r dead ( under expo or ghosting; there were no 1/45 nor 1/20 sec even for some e-shutters in those days) . Oh yes, that damn Leica M always has 1/50. Haha. Flash at f/4 auto, with thyrister circuit for sufficiently fast recycling. Flash was fixed at 24 mm coverage for group shots, never allowed to zoom even when available . 1/30 was committed to the only memory; that lever was touched once in a while to be sure. Then came my first auto-focus camera. The first flash that looked like a fat penguin with feet, with real GN >40 (for meters/ 132 for feet) rated at TRUE industry standard 35mm coverage @100 ISO. It was the first w/ HSS which I swear I never ever used. I lost all 4 reliable auto flashes , 2 of which could be used OC. And that Toshiba from my boy days, all manual single power. Just do the arithmetics on your feet, boy ! Today's modern "smart" flashes are made so complicated & stupid no wonder people are scared. Recently I bought 2 from Ado__. They give u a phony GN197 (ft) ISO 100 @ 200mm coverage. Do u understand that? 200mm? Most people under 40 probably don't. Turns out it's 72 GN (22 for metrers) by flash meter measured for 35mm, ISO 100. The LOWEST I have ever owned. So much real "experience" for now. Man, I'm not that old ! Trust me. Thanks to Muse. I think we could be friends if I were 10 yrs younger. & I'm NOT a "photographer".
