Attitude. Skills. Plan.
As a civilian, after watching the officer attempt less lethal first and the criminal continuing to attack, I understand him switching to lethal. He was alone, and there's a nonzero chance things could go worse.
Truth.
Agreed. On pcp, the perp would have the upper hand.
Yes, there are some people so high that they have supernatural powers
Police are civilians.
Facts. Couldn't have said it better.
I’d expect to get shot if I attacked a cop.
@@konstantin8901 then he gets police brutality lol
@Konstantin so we're judging somebody's ability to fight solely by their size now?
@Konstantin What if has a hidden weapon on him?
@Konstantin size of the dog matters less than the size of the fight in that dog. People also carry tools/weapons (guns+knives) that can give them an advantage over their own limitations.

I kind of disagree to be honest. Doesn't matter how big the dude is if he knocks you out and takes your gun dead. I think he responded exactly how he should have after the dude punched him in the face.
I mean he didn't knock him out though. Was a pretty weak punch to be honest. You def need to be able to put a dude down without shooting as a LEO. Also, the officer clearly escalated the encounter right off the bat. Why when you can tell the guy is already pretty agitated say, " Stop going closer to me"..The guy clearly wasn't trying to do anything to the officer at first, he literally was just standing, some people are close talkers. That line set him off. Granted, not a good idea to push a cop, but if the officer had actual fighting skills, little dude would have been on the ground without the taser.
I agree. A head loses against asphalt every time, and you can't afford to lose control of your weapon against a determined attacker. Lawful but awful? Suicide by cop? The officer had the LEAST control over that situation's outcome.
I RARELY agree with police decisions, but this is exactly what I would have done...and I respect him for only shooting twice. Most officers fire as many rounds as they can get away with, clearly wanting to kill the person. This officer just wanted the guy to stop.
With only two changes though...
1. I wouldn't have ever cussed at him because it dilutes your words with no benefit to you in my opinion. It can make the encounter feel more like a bro-dude fistfight to the suspect IMO, whereas just being 100% direct with your words carries a more authoritative professionalism.... which is, if nothing else, just more efficient, as you can't hear whats happening around you quite as well while you're busy talking. (and although cussing normally serves the purpose of relating a higher level of seriousness, the fact that you are an officer firmly dictating an order does the same job-no such words can really add to that). Not a big deal here, just my opinion on how to be a little more perfect.
2. I would have held off on the second shot for a split second to see if he stopped after the first. (although Its very possible I wouldnt have been confident in judging that in the moment and just done the same as this officer did, so I don't blame him one bit for taking two shots the way he did.)
....assuming his department guidelines would have allowed him more than two shots, him only taking two shots shows that he isn't a person who wants to just take anyone's life any chance he gets, and that's all that matters to me here. I see alot of officers who just unload-even after they are turned around and/or on the floor, so I really appreciate seeing an officer respond like this.
Yeah. Jigoro Kano was 5'2" and 90 lbs. Yip man was about 5'4" and 100 lbs. There is no shortage of small men who can kill you in the blink of an eye and you underestimate an opponent because he's slight at your peril.
@@oldschooljeremy8124 You saw the supposed "punch"... that kid was no expert. He wasn't knocking anyone out and the cop should have swung on him, not shot him.
The guy was injured and was released from hospital a few weeks later. He was then arrested, jailed and is being charged with aggravated assault and resisting arrest.
Thanks for the information, the punk really made a very bad decision!
Thanks for the info, sometimes I wade through the whole verbal part, where John repeats himself 3 or 4 times, but this time I just didn't have the patience.
That kid did not die??
I just retired. I agree with this officer a 100 percent. The guy seemed to be on something, intermediate tool- taser failed, the suspect resisted arrest, and had already attempted to take the officer's firearm. The officer feared the outcome of the individual getting his weapon and shot. It's easy for ppl to quarterback, but at the end of day, as a reasonable officer- I would have done the same action, if alone and in fear of losing my life.
Indeed
@@Joe-sg9ll every police officer is courageous. They put their lives on the line every day, for you and everyone else. Real heroes.
thats interesting, i didnt see the part where the guy tried to take the cops firearm. maybe i missed it. are you sure?

As a cop for many years In NYC on the street the taser doesn’t last for long so I always told my guys to use the mace. Even big guys go down or have a hard time. Most times a taser just pisses people off.
@@RoverTheDog1 it's because they don't want to experience it themselves in training because of how long the effects last.
@@RoverTheDog1 I agree and personally carry a good oc spray alongside my firearm.
Yes it really sucks . Good for all the crazies out there now
Can't you keep pulling the trigger provided the probes are still in?
I dislike Mace, but I carry OC whenever I'm out. It works well on most people and will give you time to do something else. Also, I'm not super affected by OC so that's a plus.
High standards are desired, but this was completely justified in my eyes. I love you guys and your expertise however in this case you are expecting too much. The officer was being attacked relentlessly and responded with the only remaining weapon at his disposal. To expect the officer to ju-jitsu this guy, while risking a struggle over his service pistol (or that possibly the perp had a concealed weapon) is a bit far-fetched. I support this officer 100%.
I agree. The officer drew the weapon to stop him. He pulled the trigger because he continued to lunge at him.
I couldn't agree more. This officer just arrived on scene and this guy lunges at him within seconds. You can't convince me this guy wouldn't have tried to grab the officers gun in a tussle and do harm. Not to mention the havoc this perp would cause later on down the road with a civilian or another leo. No regard for anyone. This guy got exactly what he deserved. End of story.
ur an animal if u think thats justified. just a cowardly weak cop who illegally escalates to lethal force
@@ernestoperfekto4055
Lol sure
I agree 100%.
John I rarely disagree with you, but in this case I do. The officer has a family, he wants to go home like everyone else, he gets attacked by an individual, the officer doesn’t know what the aggressive individual has in his pockets (!). There is no legal or ethical reason why the officer should not use his firearm at this point. The fact that the aggressor’s hands are empty, might change momentarily. However I do concur that the officer made a few tactical mistakes. Had the aggressor had a gun, the officer might as well be dead by now. It is not fair nor legally required to expect an officer under attack to respond in kind with a fist fight.
Great, now every big guy is going to shoot anyone they want just for taking a swing at them. All they have to say is, i know she only weighed 100lbs, but i don't know how to fight and she was very aggressive...so i shot her. SMH
@@kayakuprising5914 I thought a while about your argument, and yes you are right that the proportionality is not given in the officer's response. This against the background of recent shootings of people who just showed up at the wrong address in the middle of the night by accident (at least that was their excuse).
However: (1) why attack an officer in the first place?
(2) Our society has a serious drug and DUI problem. About 20% of population a snorting/injecting shitty drugs, an as a result have maniac conduct that is out of control in many cases. Drug consumption related mental health and behavioural control issues. How shall an officer deal with an aggressive manic high on meth who wouldnt listen to any reason? I dont want to be in the POs shoes.
@@m.k.7333 I agree. And as you point out correctly, (and as I mentioned before), the officer committed serious tactical mistakes. That could have ended a lot worse for him. If he had acted correctly our perp (no doubt under the influence of whatever shit) still would be alive.
Now let's put you a citizen in the officers shoes. You would be charged if you did what this officer did. You, as a citizen, would be charged for using deadly force. Police are not above the law and should be charged the same as a civilian. I agree 100% with John.
@@austinmurphy6359 I agree. Depending on the state or province a civilian could end up in really hot waters. The problem is not the police here but the judges, DAs and other responsible decision makers who put out maniac aggressors like this one back on the street the next day on a 1000 dollar bond, and that, ladies and gentlemen, is the next real crime.
I think ASP completely missed on this one. Don’t underestimate someone based on their body size, glad this officer is ok.
Yes!
Nah, need to do better
The light weight officer is a reflection of his lightweight society.
Yea I agree, the way he threw those thin wet slaps that could probably knock a fly off course, was absolutely terrifying. If I were you, I would have wet myself and ran home.
On the other hand, if I were me, I would have laid him out and went home an hour early sans the shots fired paper work. Keeping your job is a nice bonus as well.

Going hands on with a crazy guy that's attacking an officer of the law? Are you crazy? Will you risk him getting to your pistol or knock you out with a lucky punch and kill you? You don't even know if he has a hidden weapon or something on him. Do you want to get into a wrestling match with him and risk your life? Well, good luck to you. The officer did the right thing.

I kinda disagree with John on his opinion on DT … no matter how much you practice you are bound to find someone better than you… would you know at any given point if someone has a better skill than you? I think best case scenario is always to patrol with a partner.
I don’t blame the officer for the shooting… it was either that or risk getting ko and have the perp take ur gun and kill u and everybody there…

Ever since he got that perm his common sense went out the door.
@Blake Johnson I'm guessing it's an abbreviation for "draw time"; as in how long it takes to draw your gun.
@user-gj5tm7jp6j oh yeah draw time makes sense
@@limbcollector22 I think he means defense or detainment tactics or something like that. Hand to hand combat basically. I agree with John that officer should have put a knee in the shoulder, but after that I disagree. A tweeked out angry man rushing you is a deadly threat. Not everyone is Bruce Lee and no one is ever going to win 100% of their street fights. If that aggressor got the upper hand, then the next thing he would go for is the officer's pistol. Then it's game over.
If a guy is going to attack a police officer, he is definitely a danger to society.
We cannot make such a blanket statement, not all situations will be the same but I hope for the most of them what you say is true.
What kind of person attacks an officer?
@@thedukeofbellington8898 a person looking for a lawsuit, a person with low iq, a person who has an anti-police stand…😅
@@factchecker6674. I tend to think that the person who does such a thing is deranged.
@@thedukeofbellington8898 In a lot of states you are legally allowed to "resist" an illegal arrest or illegal instruction. An extreme example is if a cop stops you and tells you you are under arrest for being too ugly and making him feel repulsed at having to look at you, you have the right to resist (by physical force if necessary).
Or you can resist an illegal instruction. Extreme example, if an officer orders you to strip naked right there on the sidewalk so he can perform a cavity search because he "smells weed" on you, you can resist (by force if necessary).
There are also certain circumstances you are justified in attacking an officer, but my two examples should be enough to show that there actually is a time to rightfully attack an officer.
Usually spot-on, but this guy was out for blood. The officer responded correctly when things went south.
The guy pushed him, taser, pepper, ring his bell with a baton ok. Trying to retrieve the taser, falling on his butt, not a good look
Screaming like a zombie acting like a zombie is a good way to get shot haha.. defintly justified. I don't see much mental health problems as this guy can purposely choose to be calm and normal to attacking the officer. 😊
I don’t see anything wrong with the officer’s actions
The intent was there, but he had no ability. That's why it wasn't justified. It's like shooting a chihuahua because it came charging at you.
@@Quorented True. This was a premeditated calculated sneak attack.
Respect for that officer for getting out his taser first and quickly. This guy had a death wish.
Why in the world did this cause an “out-cry”? This shooting was totally justified!
You arent allowed to use lethal force against a non lethal threat. If you as a civilian did this you would be in prison.

There's no way AZ law is so ridiculous as to require you to risk getting your ass beat without drawing your gun.
@@redtalks4274 Non-lethal didn’t work on this guy. He continued to be a threat. Obviously, the perception from the officer is that this guy was a lethal threat. Who am I to argue with that? He had literally a split second to decide.
@000 what ifs are irrelevant in law & in court tho. None of that matters. The only thing that matters is what is happening in the moment, & the perps current actions.
@@000-z8n cop should really just thrown some hands back
The taser was his last warning, unless the cop wanted to be that guy with a headline of "Ripped cop beats tiny twig man with baton into submission" on every newspaper or media outlet. It's sad but the guy clearly didn't understand, getting shocked to the ground after attacking the officer then proceeding to attack them again after knowing he will respond with greater force, is the dumbest choice to make. It was provoked, responded to, provoked, and finalized.
More than justified.
Bus station junkie was so high, he probably wouldn't have cared about a baton.
Bruh even with how big you are, one good punch and you’re out cold and he has your gun.
He wasn't a big muscular guy, but he sure was vicious.

Small, skinny guys likes to carry knives around. The officer reacted quick. That was good.
@@hansemannluchter643 Not only that... having a street brawl as a cop isn't wise period. #1 you don't know what kind of skills a small guy has #2 the guy could do a grappling move and grab hold to the officers gun... just not wise.
Unfortunately the meth in this area is high-quality
You could tell Cop was shocked at the perp's quick response. It really threw him off balance.
Holy shit, you two are on the wrong side of this situation. After he was tazed both hands disappeared underneath and to his waistline at this time he could have retrieved ANYTHING. Watching this the first time I thought he had a knife in his hand after he got up and he was punching the officer. All it takes is 1 lucky punch and you are OUT and your service weapon is then used on you. His use of force seemed reasonable to me.
I'm glad to see a lot of people agree that this assesment is way off. His use of force was reasonable, he stopped when the threat was out of the fight, and he went less than lethal from the start. Even getting him out of the public area was smart and calm too.
I was going to mention the same thing. Closed jacket, then hands at waistline after the taser on the ground. That officer had no way of knowing what was coming at him so fast.
To get tazed and get back up would make me worry that he is on something too and drugs can make people do anything. This was justified.
Sorry guys, anyone that is willing to physically engage another person that armed with a fireman ,especially a LEO, has decided their own life is disposable to them. If he didn't want to get shot, he would not have continued the physical assault. Could the officer been better able to defend him self with open hands, yes. But like you have said before, the suspect is the one that put the quarter in the jukebox
The last thing you want is using your hand, You will never know what he can pull out of his pocket in middle of the fight
Absolutely..
As long as they dont have the whole firetruck but you still wanna be careful with fireman wielding people. You never know what they will do with that fireman. That helmet is hard and it might knock you out.
I'm a gun-guy. I love the 2nd Amendment and I carry a gun for a living in Armed Executive Protection. But I also am a life-long Martial Artist and I'm very proficient in defending myself hand-to-hand. And I'm sorry but way too many gun-guys (Law Enforcement Officers included) rely way too much on a firearm for their well-being. In my opinion you should be able to defend yourself with your hands, feet, etc. as well as defend yourself with a firearm.
@@Drealmers.... Ummm, no. The FIREARM should be the last option.
When you go to hand to hand combat with a suspect you're giving the suspect a chance to grab your weapon and the suspect could have easily hit the officer in the eye making it hard for him to see. Just because the officer is bigger than the suspect it doesn't mean that the suspect can't harm the officer as the suspect could have been on drugs. It's easy to say what you would have done until you are put into that situation. Things don't always go the way that you think that they should go.
100% agreed ...it's easy to comment by watching videos with do's and don't's...until you're in the situation or officer's shoe
That dude was fast AF and, in a fight, speed trumps size.
If he got after the officers gun, it would of been a very different situation for the officer and anyone at that bus station. It would of been a bigger risk to go hand to hand and find out if he's a better fighter than his opponent. You can never look at someone and know whether they're a better fighter... i've learned that many times working as club security for 5+ years. Some of the more wild street fighters i've met are string beans and small guys.
I'll be 70 in a month or so, and I fought a lot in my younger days against both big and small. Back then, I was a Nidan in Shudokan Karate, with a background in Judo and Aikido - and I was really, really good. The big guys always went with the intimidation routine, flexing and being a maniac - they were the easy ones to take down because they were predictable, relatively speaking; it was the smaller, wiry guys who tended to have ego issues, and were usually a little more of a squirrel than the big guys - so I had to work harder with them. The point of all this banter is that at 70yo, I'm done with going toe-to-toe with anyone - and I'll either take your eyes and blind you, or end up shooting you, 'cause my cardio has gone to crap ever since I gave up running when I got out of the Marine Corps, so I'm not going to be doing that.

@@gamer_eliaz9519 In your same view, the dude is severely mentally ill if he is just going to randomly attack a police officer. If he manages to knock the officer out he has access to the tools that the officer has on him, firearm, taser, etc. He's already tried to grab the gun once, he wants to do more than just fight an officer, he's a massive threat to the general public around him.
Also only takes one punch when over concrete for someone to get knocked out and hit their head on the concrete killing them or turning them into a vegetable

Having watched ASP for years, I am astonished and disappointed with both John and Mike, and how they (in "lock-step") threw this Officer "Under the Bus".
2 people who put "The Fear of God" into my heart, (and inflicted a lot of bruises on my body!) were both "small & scrawny"; one being the middle linebacker for my High School Football team, and the other, my Martial Arts instructor from years past.
Neither LOOKED as if they could fight their way out of the proverbial "wet paper sack", and both would make you PAY DEARLY for that assumption, whether on the gridiron, or in the dojo! "Small" and/or "Unarmed" does NOT mean "harmless", and to me, this guy more than proved his INTENT to HARM THE OFFICER on not just one, but rather via TWO separate assaults!
Sadly disappointed in John & Mike, and THANKFUL that this Officer got to go home to his family and friends, rather than taking a chance on being able to successfully go "Hands-to-Hands" with an opponent that (seemingly, in John & Mike's opinion) could have "easily" been defeated!! (I'm pushing 70 and I have even MORE RESPECT now, for the TENACITY & FIGHT in 2 "tiny" individuals that kicked a lot of butts (mine included), and "shut a lot of mouths" while respectively not even being 5'4" in height nor weighing more than 120 pounds!!! - Yeah, ... "easily' defeatable by a larger opponent !!)
Btw, fwiw, last year my 20 yo "Gym Rat" of a son, and I, worked out with a guy who was 75, maybe 5'3" on a good day, and looked as if he'd go flying backwards if he got "hit" with so much as a sneeze. One Sunday morning while chatting with him at Church, he told us that he had a gym at his house, and he invited my son and I to show up at 6 am and workout with him.
Turns out that it wasn't a "gym", it was a "TORTURE CHAMBER", and we later discovered (via his previous "victims") that this "Little Pipsqueak" took kid-like glee and delight in inviting people over that, "Didn't know about Harry", and how he'd put almost anyone to shame when it came to his aerobic stamina, and incredible strength! (though his legs had good "definition" his "puny" arms looked "flabby" and had virtually no discernable "tone" to them, so "Go Figure"!!) Point being, "small" doesn't "guarantee" that those far younger and/or bigger than you, will be able to defeat you; in some cases the "whimp" may well end up "Cleaning the Clock' of the larger opponent, and to the extent that it could cost someone their life or inflict serious injuries! In our case, our lives weren't "On the Line" and though my son and I got a good "Butt Whippin", it was all in fun, as we took it in stride and "Tipped our Respective Hats" to "Diminutive & Scrawny Harry", the "Little Old Man" with the "puny arms", who regularly embarrassed guys who were less than half his age!!
You missed the point. Don’t stand so close, and be able to outfight your opponent, or go home and leave the job to skilled protectors who know how to use more than deadly force. The guy was on the ground and the officer didn’t know how to control him. Now, I don’t care about the attacker one bit but I worry about this officer and other police officers who aren’t trained well enough. The streets are tough. Be tougher.
You’ve watched ASP for years? Well then that obviously makes you an expert
I am really disapointed in ASP's pronouncement. That scrawny guy would have torn John and Mike's head off.
How do mental health workers , a lot of them tiny females, handle aggressive patients without shooting them

My brother shared a cell with someone who killed a dude outside a bar with one punch. It's easier to die than some people realize. I don't blame the officer for seeing this mans pure aggression even after being tased and fearing for his life.
Yup, I feel like this scenario isn't being talked about enough.

@@Andretti2Tone It isn't necessarily the punch itself that has killed people. It's being knocked out and slamming one's skull against the pavement. Technically and legally, it will be the aggressor's punch that will land him in prison; not the pavement.
If you're too scared to take a punch you shouldn't carry a gun. It makes you a threat to the public.
@@rodneyhobbs6507 that's pretty dumb to say honestly. So a cop should just take a punch and then what?
There's plenty of videos on youtube where officers exercise poor judgment. This was about as good as a reaction as one could except. If he was able to do a pat down first you guys would be spot on, in my humble opinion. Without knowing if this guy has a weapon or a desire to meet his maker, the officer did what was practical. The officer cant be fighting for wrist control and then find out the suspect has a gun when its pointing in his face.
If someone was attacking me and probably trying to take my firearm, I would probably do the same thing. Very strange take from the ASP crew.

Love how fast the officer was to save his life!!! Savage!!!
I enjoy the channel and I appreciate the law enforcement support your channel provides. That being said, I do fundamentally disagree with the assessment of the officers obligation to “go one on one” with this perpetrator. I’ve been in LE for 16 years and been involved in Officer related shootings. Our academy teaches and our state’s general philosophy is that whenever a physical alteration ensues with an officer, there is always a gun involved. Many training videos show incidences where officers were knocked unconscious or rendered disabled quickly in altercations and then their own firearm used against them. To say that an officer must attempt to fight someone first to see if they may or may not lose before finding out they may be defeated and have their gun used on them is the exact same as telling an officer they have to get shot at and see if the vest stops the bullet before they can fire back. Love your channel and good content none the less.
You can escalate and have choice of lethal or non-lethal from my understanding. This cop tried non lethal which didn't work so he switched to lethal. Good riddance
This is obviously correct. A gun is indeed always involved. And jon gets this wrong fairly often. I hope police who watch this channel don’t listen to him and keep themselves safe.
If you want to test your manhood with a perp, make sure you at least have a backup, AND have already done a thorough search of him for weapons. Ice picks and razors are easy to hide. Maybe one day Jon or his buddy will find this out the hard way and then stop giving bad advice.
Rule number one, don't attempt physical harm upon an officer!
That is a terrible blanket statement. Not defending this mans actions but there are certainly cases where people needed to defend themselves from police officers. They're human too and make mistakes and do wrong as well. As much as the media would like you to believe otherwise.

Probably an "Adderall head" : )
As a fighter and bouncer I gotta say, after the tazer took the man down the officer had a split second to gain physical control if he had the skills, but he missed his window or wasn't skilled enough
When the suspect got up after being tased and closed distance throwing strikes at an armed officer... that's a wrap
A friend of mine who went from being a major city copy to small town cop got wrecked by a much smaller man who was high on PCP. Took four large cops to finally tackle the guy and get cuffs on him. Size is not always the deciding factor in the escalation of force, and if backup hadn't arrived, he would of had no option but to use deadly force as he was on his back fighting to control the perp. In the end, he was off work for almost a year with a serious back injury; the perp got a few months in jail.
If the guy would take the officer’s gun and kill him, the video would be about “why the officer hesitated to use his gun?”.
Great job I'm glad this officer didn't get hurt
why risk your life in a street fight, John???? Shame bro..
1000% legit escalation of force, taser did it's job until it didn't, attacked again, used reason force to stop the threat. Apparently, the closed fist is not part of their training, and as you both know "empty hand combat" can most certainly be deadly force.
What's the problem here....???
HA HA HA!!!👍
You guys got it wrong here. I was a business owner in a neighborhood that turned into a "Meth" area. These crazy drugged up skinny guys don't feel pain and have super strength. It takes a gang of officers just to get them into cuffs. I wish there was a way to get the media to mention this as most people have never experienced it and just don't know.
I have to admit, this one feels like you lost your way. I have immense respect for you and the knowledge you bring to this topic. With that said, I just can't bring myself to see it your way here. The aggression this perp demonstrated and how quick he flipped the switch makes it evident that the officer would have been in a fight for his life. And during that fight, as you've pointed out so many times before, those tools aren't the officer's tools, they belong to both of them during that fight. The officer made the right call. If that perp had relieved the officer of his tools, there's no telling what he would have done to the individuals in the store. I'd love to hear more about how you came to your conclusion on this one! It would be interesting to hear what lead you to your take on this.
It’s obvious they have never been in a real fight as cops..well obviously John hasn’t but maybe neither has Mike, which is not really surprising as most cops never have to actually fight a suspect..a suspect physically resisting or trying to escape is not the same as one who is attacking..it’s obvious neither have ever been in a fight for their life.
I’m as suspicious as anyone these days of police.. because I think the whole defund the police movement has led to a lot of bad seeds slipping through the cracks…so I’m way more cautious around LE than I used to be..but with that said this guy was justified. On first impressions the headlines might look bad but in reality he did what he felt like he needed to to and it wasn’t to apprehend the guy..it was to protect himself. Had the guy ran away then he would still be alive..he chose to escalate the situation.
Basically that police officer can't fight to save his life. He definitely should be in the office filing paperwork
I presume you'd say the same thing in an armed civilian's defense then
Lost his way?? 🤣 grow up , John is human not a god step down dude 😂
@@MrAuto727 you’ve not been in many fights. The perp was fast and strong, punching above his weight.

Wrong. you can't shoot a man for simply hitting you: proportional force.
A friend of mine was a newish cop in our town. At the time I was brown belt in Ju Jitsu and a stickfighter. He pulled me over for a rolling stop one day and we chatted for a bit. He knew I worked out and I found out he had no hand to hand or weapons training. He was married with a baby on the way and I chewed him up pretty good. I impressed upon him that his family expects him to come home and he was irresponsible for relying on a badge. Last I heard he was several years into martial arts and was on a multi-agency narcotics task force with a great record. Many of these videos show a real lack of technique - which is irresponsible for a cop and their bosses too. It should be mandatory to train continually to benefit both the cop as well as the public and even the safety of the criminal.
As a Paramedic of 34 years I have to say, as. Medic you better have adequate DT skills as well. I have had to employ that more than once to jump into a fight in order to keep a police officer from getting his a** whipped so there’s that !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😊
100% Justified. Could of knocked the cop out, taken his gun and used it on him or even worse, went back into that place and shot the other civilians. The cop did a really good job.
Can't act on speculation.
Two words: excited delirium. My suspect took two taser hits, multiple baton strikes, and four officers to bring down.
For one thing, the officer doesn't know if the guy is armed or not, and I'm pretty sure the officer was concerned about this guy getting a hold of his equalizer.
Mr. Psycho was acting with total premeditation, malice aforethought. He was extremely squirrelly, bizarre, unpredictable, and quick. The cop had no way to know whether he had a knife or throat-slasher razor on him in preparation for his wild behavior. If the bad guy gave him time to make a more complete evaluation, yeah maybe you guys would be right. But he was moving so fast that your armchair philosophizing wasn't available to the Man in the Arena. And there was no way for him to know whether a punch would even connect, the psycho was moving so weird and so fast.
The cop's first tool failed, so it was judicious of him to protect himself with his fallback option. Upon presentation Mr. Psycho could have put his hands up, but he didn't. The burden of responsibility is therefore on Mr. Psycho, not the cop who has every right of self defense in the face of a flailing buzzsaw attack. And, considering this was a set-up, the cop didn't have the luxury of looking around to see whether this guy had pre-arranged an accomplice to come support his attack from behind. I vote to give the cop a medal, a raise, and a promotion.
I think you guys got this one wrong..... Would love to see a follow up video addressing it again
that’s not gonna happen the only comment they replied to was correcting a guy who said he died 😂
I used to defend LEOs in use of force cases among other things, so I often came in contact with defensive tactics instructors. One of the common themes was that most officers don't practice the stuff often enough to be able to use it spontaneously. Departments also do not afford officers paid time to conduct such training, which in large part seems to contribute to the lack of training.
So lack of training is on the department as much as it's on the officer. I don't think he should be fired for this.
Is that becuase your his lawyer?
Wouldn’t have happened in Jersey where I live. This cop had no grappling skills or even attempted to use physical force to protect himself. Smh cops here would’ve knocked his ass out and put him in a jiu jitsu hold. Cops here are pretty tough… the majority are only equipped with a gun, flashlight, and cuffs. No sprays, tasers, barons, etc. they go hands on. My step father was the lieutenant in our counties K9 dept. He used to say to me, “ If I need a baton, mace, or taser, my fists and my grappling skills are sufficient enough to handle the problem. If my hands aren’t enough, you’re getting bit by my dog, or getting a couple .40’s center mass!”
Having worked for the sheriff's office here as a Detention officer I would agree bad call using his firearm, we in the jails did not have firearms at our disposal, we used hands on or taser or pepper spray, we were taught defensive training to even back away and find cover. The first thing we were taught is that if an inmate was getting too close call for back-up and back away or assist the inmate to the floor as back-up arrives. Then we could go to pepper spray or the taser unless the inmate was in handcuffs, then it is completely hands on! The inmates also knew we are considered as law enforcement officers with the authority to arrest and file charges through the county attorney's office!! The inmate doing this would be charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer as you said by state statue! however before letting an inmate get close you attempt to talk through the problem, it worked 99% of the time, treat the person with respect and they will usually return the respect! Of course I lost count of how many inmates I had to assist to the floor because they were aggressive and threatening staff, inmates or officers!
I have to retract my statement, the officer was hit, punched and pushed, when the taser proved to not do it's desired effect the officer had no choice but to go for his gun!! The jail environment is quite different we have almost instant backup, tasers, pepper spray, bean bag shotguns, and possibly a K-9 to assist us!
Given all of these taser misfires, why not default to OC fog?

Can you define the deadly threat that the smaller guy posed?
@@ActiveSelfProtectionThe guy does not always have to be a deadly threat to use lethal force. As you pointed out yourself, lethal force is justified in the state of Arizona against an individual who is actively committing aggravated assault against any other individual. Terrifyingly dangerous & critical analysis by you two super heroes. This is exactly why officers are quitting because people expect them to act like perfect robots in every single situation. They are human. They are not perfect. They need to get home to their loved ones and once you attack an armed officer you have taken your life into your own hands. Anyone can overpower an officer with that drug induced rage and take his gun.
The way I see it, the only thing the officer did wrong was failing to subdue the perp after he was tased. After that, the situation was moving fast enough and this guy was aggressive enough, that the use of the gun was justified. He could have kept fighting bare handed, but I feel like that puts him in more risk of getting injured, of more risk of having to fight for his own gun and of escalating the danger of the situation out of proportion. Adding to that, he was in an open parking lot, a place that is objectively not very safe. He was called in by that perp, then attacked by him, who's to say there weren't any other accomplices in the area. IF he had complete confidence in his striking, then yes, go for it, but not everybody does, not even law enforcement
Sorry I disagree. Officer did his job very well. Attacking an officer deserves consequences not a long soft talk.
My little brother looked like a smaller version of sean O'Malley but packed more punching power that dudes twice his size. I watched him knock out one bouncer and knock another one down like it was nothing one night. If in a situation like this then do what you have to do and go home to your family.
I agree that the way the officer handled the perp when he was on the ground after tazing him leaves a lot to be desired. Once the perp rolled his back and kicked I believe the officer did well. He attempted to create space and control the attack. Size has nothing to do with being able to defend or win a physical altercation. Once the perp was up and attacking I likely would have done exactly what the officer did.
F around and found out.
If you cant hold your own in a fist fight you shouldnt own a fire arm. Going straight to shooting someone for every little thing is pathetic.
Anyone can get lucky once and land that fist that drops the officer. Perp was in berzerker mode and would've killed that officer if he had attained his firearm. IMHO this was handled perfectly.
The criminal, could have had super human strength, and could have been a trained fighter...
The way it looked was like that guy was on something and would of probably took the cops gun and shot him with it. Not sure if punching him would of really worked usually being tazed is enough to calm someone down at least a little bit. And that guy dropped and got right back up on the attack. I'd like to think the officer could of took him down but Idk size doesn't always matter in a fist fight.
He also kicked with a shoe on... There have been several cases where sneakers/boots/shoes were considered a deadly weapon and can certainly kill... Even if someone isn't huge. Legs are way stronger especially with shoes on.

Some of the hardest felons I have fought have been smaller in stature, they may be high on meth or they may have better hand skills than you. In real world situation where this individual may knock you out and take your firearm is a real possibility. I have had an incident where a subject I was fighting grabbed my firearm and tried to pull it out of the holster. I used my baton to stop the threat. You have to do whatever it takes to protect especially when you are by yourself.
Like 3 years ago we had an incident here that made local news.. A 5.5 ft skinny dude knocked out two relatively well built officers. He started throwing punches like crazy, he instantly hit one of the officers in the nose what disoriented him, the second one got the perp on the ground but then slipped out of his hold and punched him in the neck, and then he hit him with a knee to the head, then he turned his attention back to the first officer and kicked him many times as well, then he roughed up both of the officers with more kicks while they were on the ground and escaped. Some of the most dangerous people I’ve encountered in my career as an LEO are the “Scrawny” ones. They are fast, unpredictable and in this case- his mind was made up on what he wanted to do. Police work isn’t sport- there’s no 50/50 expectation of having to perform a BJJ or wrestling match on the sidewalk with people. Your “knee on the back” would’ve been fruitless -his legs flailing about was the problem. He would’ve spun out (as he did on the video) and been on you just as he was on this officer. The officer disengaged, reset, created space and the guy closed in and the officer stopped the attack. The “lesson” here is there are consequences to your decisions. Don’t fuck around and be surprised when you find out.
Tell it like it is
That was my thoughts when I heard these two specialists in self-defenses . I have a lot of experience in Sport (Kickboxing, Judo (black belt). Your are right some "Scrawny" guys are really dangerous. exactly
I think John missed one important detail here. He never mentioned it. When the cop walks backward, he trips and falls over. Scrawny guy is moving fast. He is completely vulnerable in that millisecond. That's why he went for the lethal. In his mind, he had a millisecond of life endangerment. I know John is reciting the legal standard here, but as an observer, I think this is enough to be justified. I'd give the cop a little more credit after seeing him be in a vulnerable state.
@@EricBussman Not a huge deal here. But I think we have to be careful about stating facts, with no evidence except your own thoughts and feelings.
