My great grandfather fought and died at the 3rd battle of Ypres, otherwise known as Paschendale, his body was never found. I went there last year to commemorate 100 years since the end of the war and found his name on a wall at Tynecot cemetery. It was a very humbling and moving experience, this song means so much to me than ever before. Great reaction and thanks for the suggestion Ryan
La Kingpin 👊❤️🙂 Now that was an amazing comment! You humble me with your story! That is an amazing legacy to always honor, cherish and remember! To your great grandfather he is a part of history and his name will live on 🙌💯
Tyne cot is a very impressive cemetery, one of the 100s around there. I go there every year and sometimes 2 or 3 times if needed or if I am near. Did you also see the movie paschendale?

At the Menin Gate in Ypres, from where most of the troops marched towards Passchendale during the First World War, every night at eight for almost a hundred years now, the Last Post is played on bugles for the lost and missing of WWI. Menin Gate is a memorial since 1927 that has all the names engraved in its walls of British and Commonwealth soldiers that were never found and never got burried at one of the dozens of memorial graveyards. Five major battles took place around Ypres. The Third Battles is known as The Battle Of Paschendale and took around five months to finish. 300,000 Brits were killed there of which 30,000 still have no grave. My grandfather was a volunteer who survived all five battles and spent three and a half years in the bloody trenches...
👊❤️my goodness.. my heart goes out to you for knowing this brave history! And for your great grandfather for having endured something so heinous! Thankyou for sharing this most personal piece of history w me 🙌
Never knew they had a song about Paschendale, so cool! I go there (Passendale) and the surrounding area a few times each year for research and veteran duty at the memorials.
Cpt. X 👊❤️😳my goodness! The comment above you (kingpin) his great grandfather was in the war! And above him Ryan was the one who requested I do this song... WOW! I’m blown away at times how small our world can be ...
@@KristinKali Small world, but big war.. 30+ countries involved, 70 million soldiers and the main countries involved lost 8-10 million soldiers and 20 million injured. The battle of paschendale alone had 870k casualties in a few weeks. And that's only one battle of 4 battles that one village had. It's impossible to imagine both the scale and ineffective way of warfare, brutal even how some generals did send soldiers to a certain dead without any logic or reasonable purpose.
I have been listening to them since the early 80's when I bought Number of the Beast and Piece of Mind albums. Their shows back then live were almost as amazing as Pink Floyd. When I saw them with Quiet Riot they had a 20ft tall Eddie puppet behind them it was amazing music and amazing show. Thank for the video and the memories of the old days brought back to me.
Thank you Ryan for all the Maiden suggestions. My favorite band for about 35 years now.😃 Wish I knew why I'm not getting the notifications though. I really enjoy your reactions to Maiden Kristin. 🏆
Just FYI, the words Bruce speaks at the beginning are the first half the poem "Anthem for Doomed Youth" by renowned WW1 poet, Wilfred Owen. It was written in 1917 while Owen was in hospital in Edinburgh suffering from "shell shock" (what we now call PTSD).
The passage at the start is an exert from the poem Anthem for Doomed Youth written by the British officer Wilfred Owen, he served in the trenches in early 1917 (a little before the period of the battle this song is about) was injured and returned to the front in 1918 to be killed in action in the final month of the war, November 1918. He wrote a number of powerful and moving poems during the approximately 18 months of his combat service and convalescence. This song does a great deal of honor to the poet and those brave doomed souls he wrote about, including tragically himself.
Cyberdan, Thankyou for this touching comment... there are men here that their great grandfathers were in the war and this song takes on a new level of meaning in their heart 🙌🙂
I've loved iron maiden since I was 16, I'm 42 now and it still amazes me how good they are,i honesty think they sound better live than in the studio recording half to time
@@KristinKali I grew up in the era(80's) with all these incredible bands and the best music ever made imho and it was truly wondrous. I am happy to see the younger crowd discovering and enjoying it as well.
So, perhaps for context, WW1 on it's European front, was one of the most mindless wastes of human life in history. Big armies dug trenches a 100yds from each other and then spent several years throwing men at each other in an endless wave of pointless death. Paschendale was just one of many futile pointless battles, Bruce captures the irony and bitterness so well. We're so fucking stupid.
Marshall Snyder 👊❤️Hi Marshall, I feel that all war is futile but I’m a nobody and not a politician. There is a young man in the comments above (kingpin) whose great grandfather lost his life ...I just wanted you to know words can hurt others whether intentional or indirectly Thankyou
as a new zealander paschendale is very real for me. always get emotional. on the 12th of October new zealand suffered its darkest day in our history 850 men killed by fire from both sides. stuck on barbed wire and hiding in shell creaters. still brings me to tears. i love my home. thank you for your sacrifice so i can enjoy it.
You've wondered how they do it! Such energy! It´s simple, They have fun! They are good friends! and it shows! BTW! you need more viewers! Your reactions are superb!
Thankyou so much! youtube has changed policies since December 9...(BOOO) so we either have to ask the artist, or have licensing rights to play their music...its a bunch of mumbo jumbo... I think i might be able to get away with playing Iron Maiden Live ...? then deleting the live at a later time... I am not sure... I am still trying to figure it out
If you can do a little bit of research on Paschendale, you'll find it was one of the bloodiest conflicts ever fought in WW1. It was a terrible battle and cost so many lives. There was a painting a man saw once of a battlefield and he said surely it must be over painted, over exaggerated, but once he participated in WW1, he realised it was under-painted. There was so much carnage and so much death and despair in WW1 and this battle in particular. If you haven't done Alexander the Great by Iron Maiden, I'd suggest doing that, as they are great at story telling and giving you a history lesson at the same time.
potterhead321 👊❤️Thankyou Potterhead... what you said is all to familiar in war... and it saddens me the loss of life... that’s why when politicians are quick to go to war... I always wonder are they sending their loved ones or just ours?

As for maiden, I'd recommend rime of the ancient mariner, and the trooper ...and if you ever get over to England and maiden are on, I'll take ya to see em! Don't worry bout fainting :-)
FYI, Adrian is the guitarist with the beard, usually he is standing in the center of the stage. He is one of the main songwriters in Iron Maiden and lots of Maiden's most iconic songs like this one were written by him. He is an absolute legend.
This song is mainly written by Steve Harris, which is patently obvious - the one, only TRUE legend of Iron Maiden. No wimpy, solo-twiddling guitarist could ever come close to touching his genius.
This song never ceases to give me chills, and as the one comment on that video says, it's a criminally underrated song. Do some reading on the battle of Pachendale. It was absolutely tragic. An estimated 520,000 or so casualties over a period of a bit over 3 months.
