    You have no idea. When this came out this blew the minds of Hiphop listeners.
    He was on the West Coast and became the biggest artist in all of Hiphop. In a New York dominated art form.
    This album sold 300k units in the first week. Back then most big artist did 50k in sales the first week out.

    When it comes to iCe Cube you gotta remember he was one of the most powerful and forceful vocalist in Hiphop now and then.
    What he needs in terms of production is strong production on the level Dr Dre and the Bomb squad.
    Only a few producers can give Cube a music track. If you don't bring it on the music, Cube's voice will overpower and drown your sound. It's a testament to his legendary status.

    On Ice Cube's youtube, he did a 30th Anniversary listening party for this album. He talks about the making of the album and all the stuff he was going through at the time. You should watch it.

    You should have listened to the albums in order... you can't compare death certificate cube to Amerikkkas most cube... But now you can't help it because you listened out of order... you're gonna love it still tho...it's Cube.
    This was the first time hearing solo cube. Left NWA, now striking out on his own... finding his own voice... my fav cube album

    The beat didnt hit you because it is a dated sound. Dont get me wrong this was my 1990 summer album at age 18 but I can see why your generation would look at the beats sideways. It was done by the bomb squad who are known for public enemies music and their sound would incorporate 15 to 20 to more samples at a time. In 1990 that was the sound. Just looping one beat and rapping over it back then was kinda lazy. So yeah when you hear this the beat wont hit you hard. Also, back then rap wasn't mainstream and club bangers was a rarity if that so hip hop was more so head bobbin music. It was about the lyrics which is why hooks weren't a big deal in hip hop til Naughty by Nature came along with "opp" in 1991.

      Yeah it was pretty dated sounding but it's definitely a classic album.

      I was born after the album was released and at first i didn't get that much into the beats but after a while i came to love the sound of the album and its era. It's an acquired taste i guess?

    • @newclothes8165
      @newclothes8165 4 года назад +3

      @@cloudyriver Its an acquired taste for those who grew up after its release but I see it as a master piece as I love sampling. The sampling laws of the early 90's killed this type of style of production. Dr, Dre was a huge fan of this style and you can hear it in songs like "F the police". i miss it because it shows the producer's creativity. Now you cant make songs like this because all royalties would go to the original artist. Check out Public Enemies "Fear of s black planet" where the average song had 10 to 20 different samples. Its great.

    When he says Word but who the fk is Herb is because back in the day you could say Word or Word to Herb. By the way, no one knows who Herb is. It was just a longer way to say Word.
