You will find you will use the wench to help others out than you, unless you off-road a lot. Especially if you go to Alaska ot Tuktoyuktuk on the Dempster Hwy.! Great video! Hope to meet up with y’all someday.
At first I thought you were talking about me, hahaha! I can be a wench sometimes! 😉 And that is one of our many future plans, so hope it will come in handy then. We used it several times in Utah (for others and ourselves!) so it's great to know we have it. And definitely hope we'll meet sometime - to put a face to the name!
Ok that is the coolest truck!!! I never knew they made beds like that!! Plus all those bells ands whistles!! Dang I'll trade ya trucks?!?! lol
Thanks! It's a bit on the crazy side but makes full-time truck camping so much easier. It's a major investment but we're thrilled with it!
Great video
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
I'm looking at getting a RAM 5500, and adding a flatbed for a camper. I really like the design of the SHERPTEK. I like that they also offer so many different services for setting up a truck for carrying campers. Thank you for sharing. You have one sharp looking rig.
Hi Walter. Glad you stopped by to check it out. Sherptek in my opinion had the best combination of functionality and style. And with larger truck campers, the "go big or go home" philosophy rings true! If youre serious about this, I'd recommend contacting Sherptek for at least a pricelist. Hope you enjoy your search!
@@TheJoslynJourney I think that the SHERPTEK is one of the best thought out, and designed truck beds out there. And it certainly is very versatile too
Wow! That is an awesome setup!
Thanks, we really love it!
Thanks y'all, nice work
Thanks William!
Great setup! I just recently purchased a 2012 Chalet triple slide. 1300 mile return trip with 2021 3500 Ram DRW Laramie with torklift upper stable loads. Road really well through mountains of Arizona, New Mexico with cross winds at times of 30 mph. Camper was empty. dry weight shows 4200 on sticker. Will weight truck and camper loaded soon. Really enjoy your videos. Safe travels.
Hi William, thanks for watching. I've never seen a Chalet in person - I hear they are quite nice! So glad to hear your 3500 was doing the job. Honestly, our 3500 did fine with our Cascade but we were closer to the upper limits before going full-time hence the reason for the monster rig. Have a great time with your new camper!
Excellent build! 👏👏👏💪😎🇺🇸
Thanks! We are certainly enjoying it!
Very cool set up / thanks for sharing 🤙
Thanks, Eric!
Dope setup!
Thanks Chris, we think so too!
What keeps the camper from moving side to side feeling when you hit a bump or turning etc! I am thinking expensive liquid springs!
That's a great question! When we had our camper on our Ram3500, there was a LOT of swaying. Gary calls me "nervous Nelly", so take my comments with a grain of salt... I *HATED* getting off off-ramps, any small hills etc. - I just thought it felt horribly unstable. Going to the 5500 helped that a TON since the truck is wider which adds a lot more stability. We also beefed it up by replacing the OEM swaybar with a Hellwig Swaybar. It was night and day for me. I hold the "oh sh*t handle" much less now! 😬 The trade-off is that you will have a harsher ride. We have air bags to help but I hear Liquid Springs does a lot. I love the idea of being able to self-level (our air bags allow a *little* but not as much as I'd like for leveling). We also tried getting a quote but they wouldn't work with us because of our upfitting, which was disappointing (we were talking about installing this year and we already have the back end completed by Sherptek). And honestly, I was questioning the cost-value part. It would be cool but guess I'd have to drive one with and without for a better feel.
Looks great, guys. Nice job on the video.
Thank you! And thanks for stopping by!
I'm curious if its possible to have a rig like yours titled as an RV/camper?
I'm honestly not sure. In general, the advantage of our rig is that you can take the camper on and off as needed. I would *assume* if you tried to insure it as one unit, it would not be allowed to come off. But that's just my guess.
What's an approximate cost to put a rig like this together, excluding camper. I just have to say you really did a Great job here, Thanks for sharing
Hi John. Since we purchased everything before all of these material shortages, the numbers I have are likely not valid. The Ram 5500 was a bit over 70K equipped but we had an employee discount which you may not have. The Sherptek bed started around $10K ish pre-COVID and went up from there based upon options (we obviously added a TON of aftermarket items). Our build was $50K ish with all of our bells and whistles). The more you add, the more it costs. Also, the less you put on the more reasonable. Since we're full-timing it, we chose the full-featured option. The best bet for pricing is to ask for a pricelist at sherptek.com/contact to get the best info. Hope this helps!
Over priced...you can have a custom shop make this for half what they charge.
@@mrrod3004 you get what you pay for. It's obvious they put alot of research into the design and all the other options. Sure billy joe bob can weld together a flatbed, but those mounting tracks are pricey and good quality. I have no affiliation with either of the youtube channel or the Sherptek company, I just hate keyboard warriors the pipe in about the price with out any real research into the product. Toss in todays prices for materials and lack there of... good luck getting anything made. I can tell you the tiedown system/hitch/air bags alone will set you back 3500 in just parts. Just my 2 cents worth
@@AZJMiller get what you pay for is an extremy outdated an unreliable saying. I havw the same cnc machine and bits ect. and charge alot less for the same equality and precision engineering. You got alot to learn bud..I built this exact bed for less the half there price. And would sell it for 5k$. A 2500 gmc is 80k up north and 60k here, not getting what your paying for. thats the dumbest fkin saying there is..air bags are cheap af I install them all the time...I run a offroad shop lol. This companies a complete rip off for old timers who have no idea what's things cost. Taking advantage of old people...
@@mrrod3004 Then please advertise where you are, so regular folks can give your shop business. Thanks.
Wow...that's a heck of a rig! Can you also maybe do a break down of the overall cost to make the sherptek upgrades that you added?
Hi Johnny B. Thanks for watching! I do have a full feature breakdown on our website at www.joslynjourney.com/e47/ but not price by feature. The rig was a little over $50k but that was in 2020. Go to sherptek.com/contact and ask for the latest pricelist. It's better to get the info directly and there may be more options now as well! They will also be able to give you an idea on timing since I heard they were booked pretty far out. Hope this helps!
I put Kelderman full air on my 2021 front and rear. I can raise and lower each coener from inside the cascade.
Hi Land. What do you use balancing all 4 sides for? And why did you choose to put the controls in your camper? We originally thought we would be able to lean slightly when dumping but it wasnt really necessary. We tend to lower the airbags when we are parked to reduce the sway in the camper (when camper stays on the truck overnight). So curious about your setup...
@@TheJoslynJourney I have a full Kelderman air suspension installed. All the leaf springs in the back and coils in the front were removed. In the back is a 4 link suspension with 2 air bags per side. Up front it has a single air bag per side. Empty it rides like a half ton, very comfortable. I also had twin compressors and dual air tanks installed with there 3M controller. The controller is blue tooth so I can control it from inside the cascade. I cam also run air tools. I have 3 pre set ride heights. Low, for loading/unloading, medium is normal ride height, and high if I have to go over something. Hitting 1 button will change these heights. I can also raise or lower the front and rear independently or each corner to level the camper. Not a cheap system but extremely rugged and heavy duty.
Wow...thanks for clarifying. Thats one beefy system!
What is your over all hight?
How many inches did the flatbed add over the standard dodge bed height?
Thanks
Hi Jeff. We're 11'6" right now. I think the bed added around 6".
Great video! Thanks! Would you mind posting the prices for the truck and bed? Which truck camper are you hauling?
Hi Joseph. Since we purchased everything before all of these material shortages, the numbers I have are likely not valid. The Ram 5500 was a bit over 70K equipped but we had an employee discount which you may not have. The Sherptek bed started around $10K ish pre-COVID and went up from there based upon options (we obviously added a lot more aftermarket items). The more you add, the more it costs. Luckily Sherptek is great to contact - just ask for a pricelist at sherptek.com/contact to get the best info. Oh, and our camper is a Host Cascade. Hope this helps!
@@TheJoslynJourney Thanks for the info. Prices are not as bad as I would have guessed. I have a 2017 Cascade and 2016 Ram 3500 with all the bells and whistles. I've made so many mods/upgrades to the Ram that it's hard for me to commit to getting a new truck. How is the ride in the 5500 when unloaded?
I hear ya! I wouldn't want to have to re-do all of the mods we've done on our camper and truck now either. But, barring something catastrophic, we're hoping to be set for many years *fingers crossed*.
Oh yeah. The ride. I will say it's pretty rough unloaded. But the airbags Sherptek installed do make it better. We'll bump those up fairly high to make the ride more reasonable. That's also why we got the higher-end seats - more cush for my tush, ha! It's definitely rougher than the Ram3500 we had before but not enough to steer us away.
@@TheJoslynJourney Yeah, it's too bad a 450/0 isn't enough truck for those huge Hosts/EagleCaps because those 450's sure hit the sweet spot on smoother ride plus impressive carrying capacity otherwise. Does the 550 have the turning radius the 450 has?
Have you considered super singles and liquid suspension?
Hi Rigo... we would LOVE to have both super singles and liquid suspension on our rig. Unfortunately, I think the costs to upgrade these are way out of our price range. The super singles would require fender flares and a new bumper in addition to the upgrade. If we installed the liquid suspension, we heard at the rally that we'd have to lose one of fuel tanks. So, unless something dramatic happens, we will be sticking to our current configuration.
@@TheJoslynJourney I really like your setup. However, if you could get the super singles and liquid suspension, would you go with Elevation Off Grid or with Sherptek?
@@rigoelenes833 I think both companies would be a great choice. It simply comes down to options, cost, and their lead times.
I’m interested in the Crossfire balancer you installed. I have a 3500 dually and am curious if I will still be able to use center hub cap when this unit is installed?
Hi Stephen, thanks for asking. Yes, you will still be able to use the center hub cap - it connects between the wheel and the lug nut.
Does it bolt onto the lug or must I attach it to the wheel? Not sure I understand how it attaches. Also, what PSI option package did you go with (80psi, 100psi or 105psi)?
@@stephendolak9293 Yes it bolts on underneath the lug nut. We chose the 100psi option. Hope this helps!
I am planning to upgrade my truck wondering why you selected the 5500 over the 4500 ram? thanks
Hi James. We did it because of the payload. There wasn't a huge difference in cost and payload was our biggest concern. Oh, and as Gary loves to say: Go big or go home. 🙄
My dream rig ! One question- why RAM over Ford and what’s the ride like (loaded and unloaded) and did you consider liquid spring suspension? (Not sure they do 550?)
Hi Dave! We absolutely love it - it's our dream rig as well! Well, Ram simply because Gary was a Mopar guy through and through. We had owned a 1500 and 3500 dually before, so we're used to the setup. It's a decent ride loaded but can be really rough unloaded. We were in the Porcupine mountains and they had some rough roads that I equated to a wooden rollercoaster (unloaded). We've talked about alternate suspension upgrades but still wondering whether we may try super singles so we will wait to do anything until we get it west a bit more. Hope this helps!
American made!
Yep, Sherptek is in Oregon! The Ram is built in Mexico though...
Did you purchase the aluminum backstop or the steel, looks like steel in the pics
Hi Alma. Are you referring to the front seal plates that are just behind the spare tire? These are to help seal up the flank side area from the weather. Everything is aluminum (didn't think there even was a steel option).
@@TheJoslynJourney I’m ordering a bumper from backstop and they asked if I wanted aluminum or steel, just wondering which one you guys purchased
@@almabranch2401 Oh, I didn't realize you were asking about the Buckstop front hitch. We got the Classic 2 in aluminum, painted black.
@@TheJoslynJourney Thanx so much your such a great help🎣
Is your truck a 60inch cad to axel or 84
Hi Alma. It's a 60. And in our opinion that's way long enough. Can fit in 1.5 spaces length-wise.
@@TheJoslynJourney I’m just getting ready to order and that’s what I was thinking, I like the way you got your spare tire in there, how long is you flat deck?
According to the invoice I have, it's 9.5' long x 94" wide.
@@TheJoslynJourney does your host have a balance mark on it so when your designing your flatbed you can get the balance figured
@@almabranch2401 no. Sherptek worked with host to get cad drawings with cg info so we didn't do that ourselves.
For what you get it's a joke. 10k for a very simple design. You could buy a regular flat bed for 2k and have the side made exactly the same and all features matching as this for probably less then 1k. I would never pay more then 5k for this and that's even high.
Appreciate the comments but I guess I view flatbeds similar to RVs - there are many variations (and costs) to fit differing needs. What worked for us is obviously not your cup of tea, and I can respect that.
@@TheJoslynJourney na, you missed the point. Same materials similar design more then half the cost. You didn't get what ya paid for in my opinion for what I got here. I had the same bed made and modled off this for my articfox. I Paid half and have more option then his and I went with all aluminum and diamond plate. Just blows my mind people don't shop around, I mean I make close to 50k a week and I won't spend money inless it's justified. This hurt my feelings seeing someone pay that for a bed.
