She was gorgeous in Wizard of Oz---so hard to believe she was in her 50's then. As a child I Was enthralled with that entrance of hers in the bubble! She was so beautiful in that role.
Thank you. My name is Glenda. She was all the goodness I wanted to be. When I was 18 yrs. old I realized, I had no really good role models in my life, I was very proud of who I was because of the kindness she portrayed and the role modeled she played in my life because of that role. I came from a very troubled family and because of her charecter, I wanted to be just like her. Just a little example of how movies can influence a young persons life.
In middle school I got the part as Glinda my all time favorite character in OZ and while didn't have a beautiful pink gown (like NO other gown) mine was a red, full, glitzy, full ball gown. But when it came to telling Dorothy Iniw to get home, i could not remember a single line w out lots of prompts from Dorothy and her friends. And ages later my son played OZ .
Yall don't even understand..........I have been OBSESSED with Wizard of Oz since I wasn't even 2 yet. Dead ass. I'm 35, and to this day, when I have a bad day or feel like a depressed piece of sh*t? I watch Wizard of Oz. When I was 4, I made a "yellow brick road" out of all my moms post-its. I can sing every song word for word. And the Scarecrow is my other husband. THANK YOU for this lil tidbit. Made my day.
I’m 37 and a Wizard of Oz fanatic too! I feel the same way, watching the movie can fix any mood I’m in.. When I started working from home at the beginning of the pandemic I took the money that I would normally be spending on driving to/from work and expanded my collection of Oz memorabilia. I’m running out of space so I am setting aside some stuff that I’m going to sell, trade, or give away. Send me a message and I’ll let you know what it is available!
@@kellymichelly LOL heck, I'm just happy to have a new Oz friend that is my age ;) Yes, FB please, under the same name as here and then look for the profile picture with the girl in a dirt bike helmet covered in mud lol
The picture of her in the glittering gown with the pearls in her hair that is up on the screen when you say "When the stock market hit" is just so beautiful, my favorite. The photo of her in the bonnet that's on the screen when you said she went to London is also gorgeous very Gibson Girl-esq
I love Billie! She’s gorgeous! What a great actress and I wonder if she smoked, cause she sure aged well! Does anyone know? I know that many actresses did smoke during those years.
I'm glad you did this video on Billie Burke. I have only known her as Glenda the good witch. I did see her in one other movie, and unless I am mistaken, I think it was an early Red Skelton movie. She had a short part in one scene, and that was it. I never knew anything else about her other than ,when I was a child, I thought she was the most beautiful woman I'd ever seen. Then, saw no more. But , she had to be in her late 50's or perhaps 60 when she did " wizard of Oz " and I think that because of her , I am , and have always been attracted to older women. Damn, I just had a breakthrough.
Thank you for the information. I love old films and I'm interested in the actors, especially from the golden age of Hollywood. Old British films are my favourite. Cast a dark shadow with Margaret Lockwood and Dirk Bogarde is one of my favourites, you can watch it on RUclips 👍♥️✝️🇬🇧
OMG, the mayor of munchkin land was at my bf Kelly westfall parents wedding and that is because he was Mr. Or Mrs. Westfall grandparent and my mom and dad were at this very wedding and got to meet him. A bunch of the other"munchkins" were also at the wedding and my mom said everyone was really drunk. This wedding would have been in the mid 70s
Riverside Children's Theater, Riverside, CA put on OZ every 5 years. And for a long time they were able to hire at least 2 of the actors who played the Munchkins. My son played OZ
My grandmother moved to Hollywood in abt 1924, and eventually married my grandfather. He was very handsome and loved photography and films,. So he was employed during the entire depression as a film cutter or Editor, he worked at Paramount and some other studio. My grandmother would get bit parts usually just background parts of walking on a street or looking elegant in a cafe eating fake food. This went on through the 1930's to the 1940s, so my mom grew up in Hollywood,. My grandmother became a manager for an Apt complex in Beverly Hills that was owned by Errol Flynn, we used to have 3;autographed photos from Errol Flynn to my mom. I think we have one left. My mom didn't like acting although did get auditioned once by Edwin Mayor, And looking at the 1940 US census has my grandmother a manager of some Apts living in Beverly Hills, Calif..
I've always been intrigued by the hair styles, with masses of hair that women had. NEVER liked short hair, wear mine twisted up, and women stop me in stores to admire it ( my ONLY beauty ) and ask how. Even though it's only shoulder length.!!
Drew Barrymore is probably the only descendent left of old Hollywood. I wonder if shes ever thought of that. John Barrymore was her i believe grt grt grd father. Or grt

If you really want to know the "real" Ziegfeld look into a number of very thorough books on him but I also recommend that you go back to his 1st real "find" of Anna Held. She was his beginning of the Follies. Her daughter wrote an excellent biography on her Mom taken from her Mom's diaries. As they say "Not all that glitters is gold." Anna had a really horrific husband in Ziegfeld.
@@LeeStJohn-ym4dfYou are an entertainment scholar? Wow ... that's amazing books like that someone thought to write back then. Interesting. A time when life was much harder and harsher ... women had only finally won the right to vote not long after all the flu pandemics ... sufferagets having proved their worth. 🚑🏥 At a time it had been much harder to leave abusive conditions and environments.
