Kinda amusing the framedrops are an issue with the original game. It's quite common for emulator devs and people porting games try to 'fix' a problem with their emulator / port only to realise its working as intended and the original game had it. The game looks great though well done.
Metal Slug 2, which uses the same engine, checks the framerate at odd intervals (I believe), which is why 2's slowdown is unplayable. There's a Turbo hack that fixes it but X runs on a early build of 3's engine which negates much of the slowdown.
