    The external shots of the side impact test appear to be for the prior generation, the CX-9.

      Yes, I had to use the CX-9 footage because there is no available footage of the CX-90 in this test. The data and analysis is based on the CX-90 though.

    "This small overlap design strategy stretches out the time that the car has to decelerate, and thus reduces the crash forces exerted on the occupants" THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!! I have been squawking about this for years on these car crash videos - especially on the IIHS crash page. SO many cars perform like the VW Atlas you featured - coming to a hard stop at the barrier like at 1:00. I will often watch those videos and harp on about the poor structural design beneath the fender, causing far too much deformation through that driver's wheel area and causing hard impact of the A-pillar and firewall area with the barrier. This causes rotation, with the change in direction forcing the driver's head to slide between the steering wheel airbag and the side curtain airbag and impact the A-pillar or dash panel, significantly increasing the probability of traumatic brain injury or even death. I IMPLORE you to please edit the search hashtags in your videos - specifically this one - to add MANY more so that they will show up in more people's searches. People need to understand this, and it will wake more manufacturers up to this problem. They have so many thousands of decisions to make designing a car and bringing it to production and somehow this one facet of structural design to allow deflection instead of full deformation is missed by so many of them. About a year ago I even gave Mazda a hard time for the all-new CX-50 behaving like the Atlas did (most recent comment: ruclips.net/video/XtAPnfE53qQ/видео.htmlsi=b9iXmMg5I7EG3efb ). When I saw that I was blown away and commented in a few places hoping someone would wake up to this. The CX-50 is a brand-new model and I was so disappointed.

    The Rivian r1t earned a good in the updated moderate overlap test

    • @crashcore_cc
      @crashcore_cc  5 месяцев назад

      It was a nice surprise, as the R1S only got a Marginal in this test. The rating only applies to 2024 versions of the R1T, which likely means that Rivian made recent improvements in order to earn the Good. Hopefully, they are able to make these improvements on the R1S soon too.

      @@crashcore_ccdo you know what improvements were made on the 2024 R1T? I couldn’t find any info. I have a 2022 and want to see if the new rating applies to my car as well.

    • @crashcore_cc
      @crashcore_cc  5 месяцев назад

      Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any details from Rivian about what they changed. According to the IIHS, the Good rating only applies to 2024 models of the R1T. When comparing it to the R1S’ Marginal performance, it looks like the R1T’s seatbelts worked better (less forward motion and stayed better positioned). It’s possible they made software and/or hardware changes to the R1T’s seatbelts/ pretensioners for 2024.

    Trying to decide on the Mazda CX-9 or CX-90 vs a Honda Pilot for our next car. Family of four with two young children. Second row safety is a huge concern for us.

    • @crashcore_cc
      @crashcore_cc  5 месяцев назад +12

      The CX-90 is safer than both the Pilot and the CX-9. For rear seat safety, the Pilot scored a Marginal and the CX-9 a Poor. The CX-90 earned a perfect score in this test.

      @@crashcore_cc Thanks so much for this information! If we were to go look at a Honda Pilot, would you recommend the 2024 Pilot versus a 2022-2023 Pilot? Definitely leaning more towards the Mazda based on safety ratings, though.

    • @crashcore_cc
      @crashcore_cc  4 месяца назад +3

      I would definitely go with the Mazda in this case. If you happen to choose the Pilot, I would only go with the 2023 or 2024 models. The Pilot was redesigned for 2023 and is a big improvement (though not perfect) over the older version.

    Could you do competing vehicles like the Lexus TX for example? We're cross shopping some vehicles and the Lexus TX and CX-90 are on the list.

    • @crashcore_cc
      @crashcore_cc  2 месяца назад +4

      The Lexus TX (using Grand Highlander evaluation) has a concerning amount of intrusion in the small-overlap test for a brand new vehicle. It also hasn't been tested in the updated moderate overlap test yet, but I'm not optimistic because this test has tripped up other Toyota / Lexus models. I would personally go with the CX-90.

      There’s only one comparable EV - the Kia EV9 and it hasn’t undergone these crash tests yet.
