Did you have a favourite game from the Amiga's rather weird and wonderful collection of Christmas demos? And more importantly, what Amiga magazine was the best one? Let me know! A Merry Christmas to you all. :) -Kim
ZERO was the best multiformat magazine. Spiritual successor to YS and precursor of PC Zone. I'll die on that hill. Best Amiga mag? Dunno. I was an Atari ST guy. Probably The One Amiga
I can't remember if it was a Christmas edition, but the best full game I ever got from an Amiga mag was when The One put Trex Warrior from Thallion on the cover disk. Previously had only been released in Germany, it's a great game. Also of note, and also from The One, is Boondar, an unofficial conversion of Bounder. If you like the original, it's more of the same but with Amiga quality sound and graphics.
Nice. I bought myself an Amiga 600 (with expansions and CF disc), Acorn Electron and Toastrack Spectrum, all wrapped under the tree for Christmas day. I'm 55 going on 15 😀
I worked in a place in the 80/90s (1st job) and all the unsold magazines came in and the cover disks extra bits got binned and the front cover got ripped off and sent back to publisher. I kept the cover disks and used them like u
Watched to see what life was like for Amiga-players back then, as a console kid from Sweden born in late 80's that was never my market, but I absolutely will chime in and wish the best for Ian Hetheringtons family and give my respect to the man. Psygnosis via Playstation were legends even we console kids knew, but for the Computer kids of Britain ve must be an even greater legend. All the respect I've got to give to that man, an executive who didn't muck up work for the artists. Wish we had more of him around...
Wonderful video Kim, brought back a lot of memories. As a full game, ‘Interphase’ has always stuck in my mind, given away with Amiga Format in 1991 I believe. Keep up the great work.
I will never forget Xmas Nights.... That was the best Xmas ever... I had my Saturn from last year and this year was the year to make the collection grow. We were meeting my auntie and cousins etc s million miles away like usual. Which made pickin up the freebie from a mall that bit more magical. edit. TAKE ME BACK!!! The innocentd
Some awesome chunks of Christmas nostalgia there. The magazines of the time really were our connection to the outside world of gaming. And for those of that couldn't really afford brand new games, the cover disks gave us opportunities to play demos of new games, and full experiences of older ones.
This brings back a lot of sad memories for me. I remember a lot of these cover disks when the Amiga was still a thing... it's sad because the Amiga magazines declined and moved to CDs and then a bit later the impossible happened and CU Amiga and Amiga Format merged. And then not much later it was all basically over. The PPC migration basically failed. The community splintered and everything became so hostile only the totally insane people were left.
The same ethos of generous demo discs was carried on at their successors. PC Gamer and PC format would continue to have a lot of games and software given away with mags up until the late 90s early 00s. I do miss those days.
I remember that THE ONE mag with Psycho Santa so very well! I played that game to death over the school holidays that year! Thanks for the trip down memory lane Kim
Not sure if you've covered it in another video Kim, but one of my favourite free magazine cover games was Moley Christmas, starting Spectrum legend Monty Mole. This came free with Your Sinclaire if memory serves me correctly. Enjoyed this video, reminds me of the Amiga days - I did get Christmas Lemmings free at the time. Non-christmas related, as well as Kid Gloves that you mentioned (I got that one too), in 1991 Amiga Format gave a disc away with the full games Archipelago and Ilyad. Have a great Christmas!
All we had was Amiga World magazine in the USA. Was pretty professional and covered everything not just games. I never had any Christmas Amiga games coz the selection was so limited but Eye of the Beholder 2 reminds me of the holidays that's when I got it ha. Take care everyone!
I loved cover disks. I didn't have an Amiga back then but a PC but the principle was the same except the PC scene had Shareware which gave you tons of content for free, much more than your average demo. Heck, you even got the occasional full free game. I do wish more devs had made unique demos though - it would have made it fun collecting them instead of it just being the same as the full game but with a timer, or a single level, or just being limited to certain options.
I remember each and every one of em hehe. Forgot just how many Christmas related ones there actually were 😳 Cannon Soccer and Lemmings really stick in the memory but the PD games were Fantastic too! Just seeing Amiga Format there brings back memories you just can't re-create at the magazine stand anymore...
Man I completely forgot that the amiga mags would go all out on Christmas edition and include tonnes of games. Loads more than normal. Pretty sure my dad made it his mission to get them whenever they were available at the newsagents. PS very sad to see that Ian Hethrington has died. Xmas lemmings was a great game. As was most of the psygnosis amiga catalogue.
A great video as ever. Thank you for all your video's over the last year. I work in Health and social care and they have given me something to look forward to and enjoy. Really helped get through the endless work the pandemic has created. Thanks and have a wonderful Xmas. Mark
I worked on a Bubble-Bobble-alike back in the 90's for the short-lived Apache software on a game called Super Methane Brother ... It wasn't a Christmas game, however, all the items and collectables would change to Christmas Presents if you set the computer date to December 25th. Happy Christmas!
1992 - we'll give you stuff for free. 2022 - we'll give you half a game for full price, and then try to systematically screw you out of hundreds of pounds during the process of playing it.
That "Man utd can't fly airplanes" cheat code at 12:25 tho...jesus...also on the subject of Cannon Fodder and Sensi..Would have thought they could have done a christmas armistace special
@@nosferadu Another Chris-Stuckmann-like RUclips channel. People who don't know anything about filmmaking, think that RLM know tons about filmmaking, when really they don't. I highly highly recommend watching this video about RUclips "film review" channels like RLM and Chris Stuckmann, debunking all their claims about the star wars prequels in particular, since that's the series of videos that made RLM popular in the first place. It's really truly fascinating, you'll learn a lot about filmmaking and the behind the scenes of the star wars prequels, you'll enjoy it even if you hate those movies (like I've never liked the star wars prequels, and still don't, and I used to be a huge fan of RLM and Chris stuckmann as well, but I can't go back now having watched this video). It's part of an even larger video about the star wars prequels in general, so if you enjoy this, you can go watch that whole video too, it's on the same channel. But for now, just watch this, it's truly well made, and is written by someone who actually went to film school, and also actually did the research on the film that these other RUclips channels neglected to do: ruclips.net/video/2mArj6WvqzE/видео.html They did their big reviews of the star wars prequels years ago, and people still treat them as gospel, despite them being thoroughly and utterly debunked time and time again. They demonstrate a sheer lack of basic filmmaking knowledge, like the 180° rule, which is pretty much the first thing you learn on day 1 of film school. RLM make some fantastic videos, and they're hilarious, but yeah they are like Chris Stuckmann and Jeremy Jahns and the like, they're not real film critics, they're people who want to make films but don't want to put in the time and effort learning even the most basic of filmmaking technique and theory. Their usual videos are pretty damn entertaining, when they're not being serious but just shit-talking some objectively terrible movies. But whenever they try to do a serious review or analysis of something, they get so much basic stuff wrong that can be debunked simply by using the text itself (i.e. actually watching the films, not even watching a behind the scenes making-of documentary or reading a book about the making of it, or anything like that, all you have to do is sit through the films to find tons of examples that debunk their claims). And very few people bother to actually go and check their claims out for themselves, they just take their word as gospel. Even if you end up disagreeing with this analysis of RLM and the other similar channels to them, you'll still enjoy this video a lot. It's just that well made.
Oh this takes me back to that era in history where i didnt realise that i had an Amiga Magazine addiction. Gotta buy every magazine with a free disk. Even if i wasn't interested in much of their content.
I was always slightly jealous of Amiga and ST owners plus PC when it came to demos on mags etc and b spoke Xmas games etc etc. My nephews aquireed a 1200... Canon fodder Xmas demo as cool You weren't kiddin on time to compete. Nrver did!
OMG Rick Dangerous ha ha now there's a blast from the past, loved those games 'waaaAAAAAAAAHHH!!!!!' Best character death animations in gaming ever lol I really miss buying computer magazines and getting disks full of demo's and extra content, it was great fun. Sadly, those days are gone and nowadays everything is online, online, microtransactions and season passes that cost more than the base games and a lot of game reviews now you have find on here and most of them are insincere and incentivised by the games companies themselves. Ahh the good old days.
Did you have a favourite game from the Amiga's rather weird and wonderful collection of Christmas demos? And more importantly, what Amiga magazine was the best one? Let me know! A Merry Christmas to you all. :) -Kim
Amiga Format was my favourite :) although I was a Commodore Format stalwart before the Amiga - I guess my young mind was biased ;)
ZERO was the best multiformat magazine. Spiritual successor to YS and precursor of PC Zone. I'll die on that hill.
Best Amiga mag? Dunno. I was an Atari ST guy. Probably The One Amiga
I loved the Cannon Fodder/Sensible Soccer xmas demo when I was younger. I've got the ROM for it, maybe I'll try it again this xmas.
I loved Amiga Format and The One. And, in Italy, TGM (which is still being published!)
I can't remember if it was a Christmas edition, but the best full game I ever got from an Amiga mag was when The One put Trex Warrior from Thallion on the cover disk. Previously had only been released in Germany, it's a great game.

Yep, I remember many of those disks, quickly ended up as blanks ready for a good pirate copy full priced game :-D
I worked in a place in the 80/90s (1st job) and all the unsold magazines came in and the cover disks extra bits got binned and the front cover got ripped off and sent back to publisher.

Hey, I'd like to wish a Merry Christmas to the guy who did that Donkey Kong Amiga port.
'Hiding all the good booze from your annoying relatives"
cut to Orson Welles.
You keep producing so much quality content, love your documentaries!
Wonderful video Kim, brought back a lot of memories. As a full game, ‘Interphase’ has always stuck in my mind, given away with Amiga Format in 1991 I believe. Keep up the great work.
6:31 I would say that the demo joins Cannon Fodder, Sensible Soccer and that house reminds me of megalomania.
i remember my mate having the sensible soccer/cannon fodder cross over.. great time.. ahhhh
Christmas Fire and Ice was the nostalgic one for me. My Gran got me an Amiga 500 for Christmas with a magazine to go with it.
Thanks Kim! Brings back some fun festive memories. Can't believe I missed SWOS with the exploding ball though! Would've loved that!
I will never forget Xmas Nights....
That was the best Xmas ever... I had my Saturn from last year and this year was the year to make the collection grow. We were meeting my auntie and cousins etc s million miles away like usual. Which made pickin up the freebie from a mall that bit more magical.

The first time I got a CD with an Amiga magazine I knew it was time to stop. It was like they put all their eggs into a basket that didn't exist.
Ah, Shockway Rider on the Speccy 11:43
I was one of the developers of it... nice to see it again. Merry Christmas everybody!
Have a fantastic Christmas Kim and thank you for another great year in informational video which has kept us entertained in 2021.
14:25 Dear God! That's a hell of a cover.😅
I remember that THE ONE mag with Psycho Santa so very well! I played that game to death over the school holidays that year!

0:18 "Got it all, my wife". Imagine how sinister Xmas lunch would be at his place...
My brother and I always play Lemmings at Christmas, over a few beers.
Merry Christmas, Kim.

Remember loads of these. Great vid cheers Kimbo and merry Christmas 🙂
Playing X-mas lemmings is a tradition for me.
Special Forces also brings back memories of a specific X-mas
Mike Diskett also won the company competition for most appropriate name for a game developer.
nominative determinism at its finest
Why is Larry Bundy JR in a game at 01:17?
Ah I loved Canon Fodder and subsequently Sensible Software and their masterpiece Sensible Soccer. Good times. Happy Christmas mate!
A very enjoyable part of the Christmas experience! I do miss those days! 💾
An excellent video as always.
Merry Christmas Kim! Have a great 2022 🎄🎅🍺🎮
Complete nostalgia overload!
Merry Christmas, Kim :)
i am so happy to have found this gem of a channel!
there are not many interesting documentaries around about those times of computer gaming!
Absolutely superb video, Kim!!!!!!!
Have a wonderful Christmas, Kim x
No way would Nintendo let an unauthorised "Donkey Kong" go unpunished, these days. In 2021, they're as much about litigation as they are about games.
don't fuk with japanese copyright lawyers
it's not just nintendo lol
Nice one Kim. Enjoyed the nostalgia mate :)
What an incredibly nostalgic video, amazing work as always. Merry Christmas, and thanks for another year of amazing videos.
Psycho Santa may not be "The Night Santa Went Crazy", but it looks good.
A great video as ever. Thank you for all your video's over the last year. I work in Health and social care and they have given me something to look forward to and enjoy. Really helped get through the endless work the pandemic has created. Thanks and have a wonderful Xmas. Mark
shame they have sacked so many of your colleagues for refusing a medical procedure.. it cant make things any easier
Always love a Kim vid ❤️
Merry Christmas Kim and thanks for a great year of entertainment.
Ah I was an Amiga action buyer and then saw the light of the One, always fun and good value. Merry Christmas mate
I’ve never heard of ‘cannon soccer’ .. two of my favs hilariously shoved together… absolutely amazing
I worked on a Bubble-Bobble-alike back in the 90's for the short-lived Apache software on a game called Super Methane Brother ... It wasn't a Christmas game, however, all the items and collectables would change to Christmas Presents if you set the computer date to December 25th. Happy Christmas!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Kim. Nice way to tie a bow on these offerings as they are :)
KJ and Amiga Christmas cover discs what's not to like? Merry Christmas to you!
1992 - we'll give you stuff for free. 2022 - we'll give you half a game for full price, and then try to systematically screw you out of hundreds of pounds during the process of playing it.
2022 we'll charge you £500 for a console so you can buy 'upgraded' titles you already own
So many fond memories from an era long gone but not forgotten lol
Most of these I had - all of them I miss.
Was Psycho Santa the game that had a heavy metal version of a Christmas song (maybe jingle bells?) looping continuously through it?
That "Man utd can't fly airplanes" cheat code at 12:25 tho...jesus...also on the subject of Cannon Fodder and Sensi..Would have thought they could have done a christmas armistace special
I was useless at Fire and Ice, only just got past the ice levels.
RLM and Kim within an hour of each other. This is the stuff.
Who is RLM?

6:15 I notice the footballers getting gunned down were playing for Argentina...the wounds of '86 were still raw!
Merry Christmas Kim!
Looks like Seek and Destroy 4:20 inspired Red Zone on the Mega Drive
Oof, those Alien Breed cheats...
I loved Xmas Lemmings, and the Fire and Ice disc too :)
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
Oh this takes me back to that era in history where i didnt realise that i had an Amiga Magazine addiction.
Gotta buy every magazine with a free disk. Even if i wasn't interested in much of their content.
Happy Christmas Kim
Been missing you! Happy cringo, my friend!
Wow. So many locked in nostalgia memories released here
Merry Christmas, Kim! Great video as always. ^_^
I remember these. Thanks for the memories.
Both myself and my older Brother, used to play the Sensible Soccer Hand grenade game to death. Using the explosions for tactical purposes.
Great Content , really enjoy the Channel , Hope you have had a good christmas
Merry Christmas to you and happy new year.
I bought Amiga Format in the late 80s and drooled uncontrollably. I had to get an A500
Nice 👍 I also recommend the video Echa Ekranu 👍
Merry xmas Kim ^^^
Wow i had no idea they did Xmas versions of Lemmings and Cannon Fodder! Thanks for this, Kim. Have a nice Xmas!
3:44 What’s the game on the left with the three guys in various colors? I vaguely remember playing it back in the day and it was great!
As soon as I saw that Santa with a double barrelled machine gun it brought back memories. I am sure it was from one Amiga December 1994.
1.38 and the magazine came up!
i used to enjoy going in john menzies ect with a big strong magnet and erasing the cover disk's and cassettes.......... hated those computers
ATR xmas demo always got a lot of play from me :)
Feliz Natal.
Merry Christmas.
Feliz Navidad Pedro 👍
I have very fond memories of the xmas cannon fodder disk. 😊
Christmas Lemmings was incredible
Meğer ever had those games we didnt had an amiga magazine in mu country but i loved mu amiga.
Psycho Santa, I've got some great memories of that game. For some reason. Played it in an emulator recently, the sound is hilarious-ly awful
Santa with a gun is an iconic image that's burned into my brain!
I'd forgotten about it until I saw it on this video! Nostalgia!! I remember getting that very issue. Have a great Christmas 🌲
I was always slightly jealous of Amiga and ST owners plus PC when it came to demos on mags etc and b spoke Xmas games etc etc.
My nephews aquireed a 1200... Canon fodder Xmas demo as cool
You weren't kiddin on time to compete. Nrver did!
Is that Andrew eldritch on the left in Hollywood hustler 😂🤣👌
Fair enough!
happy xmas
Maybe in 2022 you could do a look on Horrorsoft ...love your videos
fun vid, cheers man
Cheers Kim :)
Does someone know the name of the game at 0:37?
Santa's Xmas Caper
It's not Christmas until it's Kimsmas.
Hollywood Hustler starring Lucien Sanchez?
I went between Format, power and One

i miss the lemmings :(
6:29 - peppered by gun nests? How can you not mention that building is from Mega-Lo-Mania? For shame.
That Bulldog Blighty one is still pretty much the only good football game that has ever existed.
You don't seem to like Amiga Action much. I wonder why ? XD
Amiiiiiiiiiiiiiiga!
Ho ho humbug!
