Ishiba is in more of the moderate center right faction of the LDP while the opponent he defeated for leadership, Takaichi, was on the far right faction. Ishiba's victory implies the LDP was afraid of actually losing an election (a real rarity, as you mentioned) and wanting a less controversial figure (from the general electorate's perspective) heading into the next general election.

      Right, alt right, far right...
Those are the words commonly heard in dead end courses like gender studies in the west.

@@DontKnowDontCare6.9 I'm not sure if you're denying that the LDP has been straddling the territory from center to right of the Japanese political spectrum since its inception or if you're literally denying that left and right are words that have meaning.
If it's the former, their main rivals, the Constitutional Democratic Party, are a center-left merger of the Democratic Party of Japan and the Social Democratic Party of Japan and have pacifism and increased welfare spending and higher minimum wage etc. as their agenda. The LDP very much does NOT favor those things. It's very hard to argue the LDP aren't Japan's main center-right party. The LDP isn't as far right as you can go...Hashimoto's outfit the Ishin Party occupies the hard right. The decision to go with Ishiba is LDP betting that they can try to moderate without having Ishin eat their lunch on the right fringe, while if they'd picked Takaichi they'd have been trying to hold their nationalist base at risk of alienating the swing voters.
The LDP is VERY good at adapting to changing circumstances to not lose elections. They've only ever lost twice in their 60 year history, 1993 and 2009, and both times the DPJ (the CDP's predecessor) screwed up so badly the LDP was right back in power the next time up. They've really been bleeding lately so it'll be interesting to see if they can pull it off again next year.

Japan’s governmental body is generally far more right leaning than the polling suggest their constituency largely is. While it hasn’t made international news or anything, Japan has been undergoing a lot of societal change in the past decade, which is probably why the LDP feels the need to present moderate going forward.

Interestingly, in one Story of Seasons game, the Japanese version of Harvest Moon DS Cute, had allowed players to marry someone of the same sex (termed the "Best Friends" system). The feature was removed from the North American version over concern its inclusion would have raised the game's ESRB rating.

Electing a Christian who couldn't beat the Nationalist who was assassinated is going to cause a harsh divide vs pro-western and pro-eastern alignment in Japan. Which is not going to help stability.
Also if we're talking about tomodachi again I think it's important to mention that the marriage function in the game is supposed to be humorous and allow Mii's to have children. If someone puts themselves and their spouse in the game they don't have direct control that their Miis will reflect their relationship instead of proposing to each other's grandparents or a family guy character. Reflecting the reality of the customer's relationships was never a goal they had, regardless of orientation.

Christian by itself doesn't indicate a lot about Ultranationalist vs not in Japan. Taro Aso (Prime Minister 2008-2009), arguably Japan's most right wing and nationalist leader in the last 25 years, was a Christian.
Japanese Christians also don't stick together necessarily, either, as can be seen by former PM Aso absolutely fuming and coping with Ishiba's victory.

@@pattersong6637 I'm not so much commenting on the christians beliefs themselves as much as public perception of them. They are a extremely small minority, less than 3% of the Japanese population, and are culturally associated with western values by the general public. Or to be more simple what I'm saying is regardless of Ishiba's actual policies I think it will increase discourse and division, but not to due to any personal fault of Ishiba's.

Given that Vivian from the TTYD remake went over well in the west (aside from like one twitter post), I think a new Tomodachi Life if same sex marriage is legalized is a safe enough bet. People forgot how incredibly well that game sold especially for its presumed budget, even with a sequel not releasing in some territories it'd still likely be VERY profitable.

The Tomodachi issue isn't about the West. This is specifically about the reaction from Japanese gamers. In the case of TTYD, the script did not change in Japan, it was always like that. The only new aspect was a better, uncensored translation.

The Sims 3 already had this option since 2009 I believe, I would be shocked if same-sex relationships would still be impossible in a new tomodachi life game. Didn't that one RPG game allow for that already somehow?
