She lives exactly like my grandmother. My parents are laughing at such a lifestyle but complain about high costs in the city. Back to nature it is. I'm investing in vintage clothes and some clothing styles from 1800-1900 from now on

I’m quite new to trying to be zero waste, but already I’m using a flask in the morning to save boiling the kettle during the day. I’m composting and trying an eco friendly shampoo bar too. In the transition stage with that at the moment 🤮

Hi Niamh, I reused my old duvet cover for napkins and kitchen towels they are fantastic to dry fruits and vegetables , my old towels, I sew into small squares and use as my dish washing sponges, it doesnt lather as much but it does the job. thanks for the ideas in this videos, I absolutely love it. I do wish that one day shopping in bulk and bring your own bags and bottles are created more around the world, sometimes the goods in the package itself is too much even for me to consume and they go really bad fast too. love you Niamh xo

I am going out of my way to source plastic free alternatives now. I placed my first order from a package free shop and I try my best to buy all my fruit and veg loose with no packaging. A little tip that I can give everyone is this: if you need to buy something new, if you cannot get it second hand, look for eco friendly alternatives. Living in the UK gives us the luxury of being able to source eco friendly products by just doing a bit of a google search. For example, I lost my hairbrush, so instead of just buying one from the shop, I bought a bamboo one online. Just by making small changes like this can really help the planet. Thanks again Niamh - your videos are good for the soul and your channel is seriously one of my favourites!❤️

And just around the corner, there is an Asian shop with the most colourful display of fruit and veg’ outside that I’ve seen outside a market. And no packaging. All right on the doorstep almost. This is in Norwich, England. Fabulous!!!!!!

I always buy used dish towels. They still last many years, when they are thin I cut them up and use them in place of disposable Swiffer floor cloths. They pick up just as much as the disposables. Poke the 4 ends into the head of the Swiffer mop head and it works a treat. I also use old dish towels cut up as rags. Once they are past that life they get burned in the fire pit and put in the garden with the rest of the ashes. Rarely do I ever use paper towels. I am a thrifter from being a teen. Reusing is a lifestyle my friends and I are all very comfortable with. 95% of my wardrobe is thrifted too. Great ideas here. The woodchip method you show works very well in a veg garden. I have used them for years. Cardboard is better wet down first though. Apparently the worms love the glue in the cardboard. U.S. based Tree trimming crews working around the neighborhood are happy to deliver wood chips free to you. Saves them time going to their dump sites. 😉
This is sort of a delicate subject but many women are now using this method. For well worn soft fabrics like heavy flannels and dish towels is the use of a bathroom “personal cloth” system at least for ladies and girls going number 1. Some folks take this even further. It saves on using toilet paper, which most are bleached and/or chemically treated which is not particularly healthy, especially considering the part of the body they are used on and not flushing every time we urinate saves water and the chemicals used to process water. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and getting us to think about the enormity of our waste 👍🏻

Where I work, we have a ton of heat treated wood pallets, which is perfect for me, since that wood is safe to use, and will now become our raised beds for next year. This way we can use even more of our unused back yard for a significantly larger garden. Our leech field takes up most of the back yard, so raised beds is the best option. I'll be able to get some compost mostly free and will probably have to buy some too. Today we saw that one of the local schools for their fundraiser is selling compost and doing something else zero waste, which is amazing to see in the middle of nowhere!

I am saving vinegar bottles so we can bottle our own washing liquid. I always save metal brackets, screws etc...for reuse in other projects. Our lovely teapot lid has just broken again, beyond repair, so I am planting violets in it. I would love to get to the point where nothing that comes onto our property leaves it. It is a fun challenge, and also makes me realise how much I have wasted in the past. I also scrounge other people's used jars, old bricks, Autumn leaves etc...I'm off to the charity shop now to find an old plastic container to go in our bathroom sink as we are in severe drought and trying to save every drop of water for the garden.

You show such great tips on how to reuse things. I have made a few changes here at home in Georgia. My husband thought I had lose it, but once he saw how much money we saved and how our trash was much less he changed his my. That was not using paper goods and using real fabric for our cleaning needs. He ask me why have we not done this earlier. Some things which I can think of right now...
    1. old toothbrush to clean things. it can also be used for painting/art for that spray effect.
    2. old clothes can be donated or if they are torn and can't be worn then they can be used to create doormats etc.
    3. old plastic bottles can be spray painted and/or can be painted with acrylic paints to give them a new life.
    4. eggshells can be used to drive away lizards from the rooms of your house. just hang them or keep them somewhere and see the magic.
    5. old plastic or any other containers which are broken or those which you don't use can be painted and used as planters. especially the paint buckets. they are very strong and won't break.

I use old textiles to create rugs, dolls and cushion covers. Most of my furniture was either given to me, or rescued from skips and then revamped. I reuse jars and tins for storage. As I live in a flat we dont have biodegradble food waste collection, so the local birds, squirrels and foxes benefit. Tfs

I make my own funnels from the tops of plastic bottles. Reuse food containers to store leftovers in refrigerator. Reuse glass jars for food storage. Use the cardboard rolls found inside paper towels to put under saggy chair cushions for more support. It works but you must collect and put under seat for months until they are accumulated . During the pandemic this has worked to save backaches and stop leg spasms. Use all things from nature to decorate inside home. Pressed flowers make beautiful wall hangings. Decorate with dried herbs and roses hanging from a string or cones. Make dried oranges and dried apple garlands and string using thread and tie cotton fabric scraps between each piece of fruit. Hang in window. Use kitchen tea towels for curtains. Hang old beautiful plates on the wall. Just reuse and save money.

I have often wondered if there was a plastic lobby like arms lobby. What else is the reason that governments don’t do enough in making laws or policies for less plastic n packaging. One trip to groceries or online ordering is enough to make me feel guilty n there is nothing I can do about it . I do carry my shopping bags but all the things are already in primary packaging.. my big regret is also that I don’t have compost bins or space living in an apartment. N no place to use it too . A few house plants is all I have .

Amy Sternheim I live in Singapore.. there is hardly anything to call farms here . Though it’s a very green city. Will try to find from building management if they buy manure for building garden/ plants or they want to make a building compost bin system .. but looks unlikely.

Plastics became the norm around 1998 because plastic weighs less so goods were cheaper to ship in plastic instead of glass. But shipping is even less when you buy in bulk and bring your own containers.

Plastics and petroleum are linked. Ultimately same lobby.

Thank you for your wonderful ideas! I am trying to get started with living a cleaner more simple life! Your channel is a pleasure to watch!
My first project is going to be moving all my bagged foods, like rice, cereals, etc into repurposed glass bottles, like from mayo and such!
I’d like to start simplifying my personal cleaning products next. One thing at a time!
