Thanks Kristen for keeping this music alive. Perfect tempo and impeccably played. Please accept my highest compliment, and I say this with equal parts admiration and jealousy, you make it look easy. I've been playing ragtime for 40 years, largely for my own amazement, because I am a hack. At no time have I made any of Scott's pieces look easy. Frog's Legs took me 3- 4 months to just to get to " sorta okay". A request: more James Scott, please. Maybe something lesser-known and quirky like Dixie Dimples. Or how about one of Joe Lamb's posthumously published numbers, like Toadstool Rag. The Joplin catalogue has been played to death.
This is brilliant, as usual. Kristen really gets ragtime. You don't need piano or forte with ragtime. The melodies are wonderful, the rhythms compelling and the harmonies delicious. Ragtime isn't about light and shade, it's about playing what is there. If you don't agree, listen to Scott Joplin's original recordings. Well done, Kristen, I wish I could play like that.
Scope Emmon Yeah nice try but you deleted your comment saying that you cut yourself over people saying this song is by James Scott. You probably didn't know who James Scott was and thought this was by Scott Joplin so you got mad. There's no need to be embarrassed.
Fantastic! I got into ragtime through a local amusement park that I had a season ticket for which had it continually playing in one area. It was a few years later at uni that I learned about Scott Joplin, put a name to every song I'd heard and knew by heart, and about the art of ragtime. Your speed and flow are flawless. Thanks so much for sharing this and, above all, for bringing this to life again for a new generation that can see what a wow this is.
I started watch these videos about an hour ago, with the intention of just listening to one, but after the first one I was hooked, What an amazing talent, so young and with a smart aleck attitude. That attitude adds to the enjoyment. I would go so far as to say she is to the piano what Chet Atkins, was to the guitar. A great find.
I have this very tune for a 1907 Regina Music Box. It is wonderful to hear how accomplished you are as a performer with obvious great performing abilities to bring to life a tune from over 100 years ago. When I hear it play on my Regina Music Box I can hear your performance in my mind as the Regina plays. Keep up the good work, you have great ability and it is expressed well in the music of the past, the era in which music was more complex and it took skill to perform it for others. You definitively have what it takes to play the music the right way!!
You've got it girl!! You play it like it was meant to be played. It has come alive. There is more to playing ragtime than hitting the right notes precisely, and even getting the dynamics right (which even the concert pianists don't quite get - like William Bolcom). But there is still more to it - and you've got THAT... and that is why ragtime was the precursor of hot jazz...
"People come and ask me, and say what is soul? And I tell them, forget it, if you gotta be told. And if you ain't got it, you can't get it." (Heard on "Banana Splits Adventure Hour," ca. 1965). I think she's got it!!!
Hey Kristen, I've been subscribed for a little while now. Amazing playing, actually really inspirational. You may have convinced me to upgrade my keyboards finally!
Very enjoyable. The complexity is amazing how you can combine the various rhythms and melodies at the same time. I either play lead or rhythm and neither the two shall meet.
I have heard ragtime derided as N--- music. I only discovered it after seeing "The Sting." It takes skill and genuine talent to play, neither of which I have after six years of piano lessons. The same goes for "boogie woogie," which I also couldn't play to save my life.
Really amazingly played rhythmically and very stylish. Technically I am not mentioning because I also play classic piano and ragtime and knows how difficult it is . To Kristen Mosca i have a question directly . Do you use the legato pedal any time? It is sounding like that but i cant see it.
I'm Learning This Piece From Ear Right Now,A Nice Thing To Branch Out To Different Composers,And James Scott Is The Second Ragtime Player Of These Three Ragtime Composer,So It's Nice To Learn About New Things.
If anyone remembers the megadrive game 'toejam and earl' in the 1990s ..well I played it with the sound turned off and this style of music as a soundtrack ...it worked quite well to be honest
Do you retain all these pieces or do you have to play them regularly? How many songs are in your repertoire and how do you schedule your repertoire practice? I'm having trouble keeping 60 easier songs going lol.
Very good. I have listened to this quite a few times. Your interpretation is great. When i looked at your Facebook username I thought it was kristenmarscapone like the cheese 🙃
first off, i love piano. thank youfor training to play this wonderful instrument. plus, i too learned a coupleof rag time pieces. and i enjoy them. ill have to share entertainer- i still remember it. one request: can you play a rag piece at a steady 88-100 bpm. i notice many people like to play at 120-140bpm. i think its great to show how someone can be fast and accurate. but it is also unnerving. i like to hear piano for its soothing tones. i dont like it when i get anxious from listening to piano.
In C# no less! You're good Kristen! You have strong hands, a good reach, and accurate technique. I play piano too, and I've played a little ragtime in my day, so I know what's involved in what you're doing. It's not easy, and it requires a lot of practice. I love to watch your videos! Thanks for posting!
EXCELLENT. I immensely enjoyed seeing Ragtime being played on RUclips. Kristen you're a joy to watch. I would love to see you play Leola or perhaps Sugar Cane. Keep up the great playing.
Kristen Mosca you are an angel. You align talent and beauty. You are in the appropriate city (Las Vegas) to make a big splash eventually. I like your stuff. It would be great to see you perform at the Montréal Jazz festival where I live.
Just found your channel and wasted no time before subscribing to it! Is James Scott’s “Grace and Beauty” in your repertoire? I hope to hear your version of it one day. Your interpretations are phenomenal, you have a marvelous feeling for Ragtime in its pure, original form.

I used to be a rock and roll guy in my younger years, but ragtime is my "new music". Scott Joplin is my homeboy.
I find a lot of 12 bar blues reminds me of ragtime.
Same here. I just bought my first Roland

This was one of the most popular Rags of the Ragtime era It is so nice to hear a ragtime Masterpiece played as it was written !!

This is absolute talent...The genuine article. Ms. Mosca, your pieces are a pleasure to listen to.
Thanks for adding to the very small amount of performances of this piece on RUclips! I loved it! My favorite James Scott piece :)
I saw your video too good job on that piece. I just finished maple leaf rag.
Scope Emmon Um this piece was by James Scott...... so I don't see why you would be bent over him saying James Scott
Scope Emmon Yeah nice try but you deleted your comment saying that you cut yourself over people saying this song is by James Scott. You probably didn't know who James Scott was and thought this was by Scott Joplin so you got mad. There's no need to be embarrassed.
Scope Emmon Well yeah basically because this rag was written by James Scott and it even says in the title

I can't watch her anymore- she's too good. My piano burns to the ground tonight....
goesfastandfar Maybe you’re going too fast and too far. Keep practicing slowly at first on your own piano, I’m sure you’ll get there! Lol.
it's stuff like this that makes me either want to quit playing piano, or practice even harder. :P
Dont y'all ever quit! Piano is the finest instrument in my opinion.
Yeah, just practice.
Just remember, she was a beginner at one point.

You're a ragtime goddess Kristen, never stop sharing your passion with us!

Hey Kristen, I've been subscribed for a little while now. Amazing playing, actually really inspirational. You may have convinced me to upgrade my keyboards finally!
Jody1985beta it’s you that makes the music not the keyboard it won’t make much of a difference if you upgrade your keyboard
You're so accurate! This one is a joy to hear and see.
Hey, I just started playing the piano, I was wondering if you had any tips on how I could improve?
Stop watching videos - Start playing the piano..
She's good. She's the last of the few that realizes that ragtime has a bounce and a punch to it. it's not romantic music.
but it could be !!!! ... LOL !!!
I've decided I want to start learning some Ragtime pieces myself. Would love to see some more from you, Black and white rag maybe?
You are FANTASTIC!!! Amazed I never heard you before. A true discovery for a jaded RUclipsr. :)
Arguably, Joplin's music was lost in time but revived in the early 1970s when it was in the soundtrack of "The Sting".
Wow, Jo Anne Castle would be proud of you ( I would think)
That's a name I haven't heard in many years
Joe Ann is 80 now. I first saw her play on the Spike Jones show when she was a teenager.
Okay...I'm bingeing on Kristen's music videos. Can't help myself.
I'm in love with ragtime and with this girl 😍

Frog Legs March? Is their also a Sauteed Snails March?
It's "Frog Legs RAG". Rags were named by picking any random word or two and adding 'Rag' to it.
