  • Welcome to another devlog for Dauphin! In this episode I turn what would have been a day off into something much more productive - an experiment to see what it would be like to be a full-time indie game develooper! I walk you through my day, from 6am all the way to 5pm, and show the progress I make on Dauphin along the way. Hope you enjoy!

truth is this is just a cover, it's what most people do. reality isn't so sunshine, organized, or planned.
i suppose if all the stars aligned and kept aligning for you, you might get this everyday but i feel not even Ben has that happen day to day.
they should really do a "worst day ever" version of this to counteract peoples expectations of what actually happens.

      that just isn't reality.
it doesn't matter how perfect you appear to be, the pressure will catch up and the explosion will be that much worse.
there isn't a single person on Earth that lives their life like this everyday, if you foolishly believe that then you haven't been alive long enough to understand this fact. as belief isn't based on facts, it's just that you accepted it as fact, not that you used facts to come to the conclusion that it's true.
rich/poor, talented/untalented, people are people. while life is most certainly better when you have money, it most certainly doesn't stop them from self-destructing. in most cases it actually enables them to self-destruct because everything is so easily available to them.
anyway, there is so much wasted talent because wealth between the classes of people is so vast. it's such a shame that people allow this to stand, i mean we could of most certainly already been living in space had everyone had the same chances afforded to them.

As a graphic designer, I think your inventory is fine as it is. The only thing I'd change is the number of the stackable items from white to black or another dark color. White doesn't contrast well with the light background of the menu, so it becomes quite hard to read effortless.
But if you're still not satisfied with your inventory menu, maybe try to design an universal menu style that can be applied to everything in the game. Try to think what colors and shapes go well with the mood and tone of the game. When you have an universal visual identity, it becomes way easier to design every menu for the GUI.
Awesome devlog as always, you motivate me to have more discipline with my chores and work lol

I have an idea for the next boss: A giant octopus! I even have a move set idea.
normal attack ( most common) = It extends one of it's tentacles and tries to grab you
Special attack ( less common and more powerful) = It spins all it's tentacles rapidly and moves like a shuriken following the player
Projectile attack ( self explanatory ) = The octopus has glowing blue rings appear around it's body before shooting darts of poison around itself

Looking forward for your game! A tip: Inspiration. Not necessarily games. Movies, music, books etc. I can really recommend movies from Studio Ghibli. I know Eric Barone was also very inspired by them and added ghibli easter eggs in his game. Movies like Spirited away and Howl’s moving castle are REALLY inspiring and provokes lots of feelings with the story, characters, hand drawn art, music, and more. Their movies also touch similar subjects like Dauphin. Peace with nature, growing as a person and more. They’re since half a year ago available on netflix.

Like the progress so far, you're sticking to your project and that's great. We all know how difficult that can be at some times.
Small suggestion/idea for the inventory - maybe keep the 'I' key only for the inventory. Make use of 'M' for map and you can make it so that it only shows the map while holding down the key, usually players just glance over the map(?). Also for Notebook, it can be also just 'N' key.
I know that introducing lots of keys can seem overwhelming to future players, but it can help you reduce potential UI clutter and maintain 'clean' aesthetic :)

To everyone landing here after Thomas Brush have send you here. Please do note that DevDuck never has spent 500 dollar on a course, made by.a person that sells "Stop dreaming and start selling your games full time" This is absolutely fraudulent and capitalising on the aspiring young game developers. All he does is rake in money and tell you stuff other people have already talked about. All you need to do is to work hard on your games and buy a marketing book. Never ever fall in to the trap that money will come to you when you make an indie game. It might... but you won't be learning that from that Brush course. Because face it... Why on earth would he teach you these things.. and earn even less money in an already oversaturated market. Instead please find good coding practices by fe. Sebastian Lague, or game grind or on udemy. Do not fall for this guru who got himself filmed by a drone on his bike and in his house to show his financial freedom. This is pure guru material. If it sounds too good to be true... it probably is not.

Dude. You play video games and work and still manage to be this productive on your channel? Man. I have envy, admiration and so many questions. My literal only "musts" are studying and my game development / channel. But even then I still slack off (specially now, before covid I was a happy productive robot). I'm either mega productive at times, or doing nothing for weeks. I wish I had a steady flow of consistency and discipline. Its my aim but my mind makes it more scary/hard than it needs to be. Anyways, sorry for the venting. Doing it in a sea of comments makes it hidden and safe for me to do it xD. Thanks for the video; it will solidify my aim.

@@DevDuck It would be awesome if plants suddenly came alive when corrupted, and became enemies. When they're cleansed they could root back into the ground and maybe shed some corruption gel or another item?
Another idea would be to try and get the crabs to corrupt all of the plant life there which could summon the horror crab? The fisherman in their hut could hint at it in their dialogue...

  • @justswayo

Ok you're probably overwhelmed with ideas but I had to get this out:
For the notebook, depending on how many times you cleansed an enemy type, you would learn more. For example, 5 kills of one enemy type: Learn that the enemy is weak to fire.
You could also make a feature were instead of cleaning an enemy and you get more knowledge on it, there is a feature were you can observe the enemy, I have a ton of ideas for how to do so but you can do what ever you can come up with. (of course)
Final Idea: After cleaning an enemy, I saw someone saw that the corruption goop should be a item you can pick up. Maybe with the observation ability and that idea you can craft your own good goop. Maybe one goop should be one were enemies attack fellow corrupted enemies and another that heals you.
I'm sorry I put you up to this.
