Same, i love the Lenovo brand (definitely the most reliable of brands i've used) and am getting this one for a great spec/price on e-bay

Am looking to get a refurbished thinkpad x1 , trying to decide gen 8 or gen 9.

Very similar, the Gen 9 has an 11th gen Intel processor wich is slightly better than the 10th gen of the Gen8 and the Gen9 has a nano sim slot instead of the wxtension ethernet port wich could be very convenient for connectivity. The prices are a bit higher for the Gen9 but they both hold up very well

The Gen9 CPU is 10nm tech which should be more energy efficient and better battery life. Other than this the biggest difference would be the fingerprint scanner being integrated into the power button which I personally think is neat

Is it worth hetting the i5 model of this now?

i5's have the same amount of threads as i7's the only difference is that clocks a tiny bit lower. I would be more concerned about RAM amount, its better to look for 16 Gb models. So - yes if you have a good one for a decent price it's definitely worth it.
