    Unpopular option: if you intentionally seek out the parents and loved ones of a missing child just to harass and torture them, you deserve jail time.
    The horrific pain that they cause somebody should not go unpunished, especially when they absolutely meant to mess with them. I understand often it’s kids “joking around” but they still need punished. Have them do community service or something... Most of these mean people can’t be tracked down but some have been and nothing happens to them. It’s bizarre.

    • @RByrne
      @RByrne 3 года назад +14

      I absolutely agree with you. Seems like they could make it an extension of a harassment charge, like Aggravated Harassment or something. It's hard enough to mourn the loss of a loved one and that just makes it that much tougher.

    I remember when this happened. I am also Canadian, and they did so much to bring this up in the media all the time. His photo was always on the news, was on posters, milk cartons and envelopes of bills. It’s hard to believe it’s been 30 years. I know cases like this made me a very cautious mother ... until my son was in Grade 5 he was never allowed to walk home alone or stay in the house alone. As a mom, my heart goes out to the Dunahees - it’s not their fault that they let their child go play like any other normal child should be allowed to. It’s solely the fault of the monster who took Michael. I hope that some day we’ll find out what happened to Michael. ❤️❤️❤️

      Amen unlike Maddie McCann, Michael's parents did nothing wrong especially in the 80s. In the 80s it wasn't uncommon for kids when they were older to even go to the park and stores by ourselves.

    • @LillibitOfHere
      @LillibitOfHere 3 года назад +17

      I walked 4 or 5 blocks to and from school every day more or less on my own when I was in third grade in the late 80s. There was about 10 kids that would congratulate into a group on our way to school. I was fine and always felt safe. I have a daughter who will be going into 3rd grade next year. She’s not allowed to play in the front yard without an adult. Times change.

    • @Author.Noelle.Alexandria
      @Author.Noelle.Alexandria 3 года назад +15

      @@LillibitOfHere I just looked it up, and it was about 3/4 mile from my house to my first elementary school, and well over a mile to my second. My brother and I both walked to school starting in first grade. It was normal. In pre-Covid times, it was common for kids in my neighborhood NOW to walk to the local elementary school about 3/4 mile from here, something I marginally envied since my daughter's school is several miles away. Until last March, it was normal in this neighborhood for little kids to be outside by themselves since the adults all watched each other's kids. Hell, the neighbors' toddler would sometimes sneak out of their house and into mine to play with my dogs! They had a house fire on Halloween 2019, so have been i a rental while the repairs have been done ever since.
      Thing is, there are fewer abductions than there used to be. We just hear about them more which makes them seem more common now than they were. What's changed about the times is that kids are literally safer now. What hasn't is that kids are still most likely to be abducted by people their families know and trust.

    • @AngelMary

      I remember when she went missing. It was so sad. I was 15 but I was so tiny & still looked like I was about 12 or 13 (& did until I was in my early 20's) & my grandmother wouldn't let me go anywhere alone or even with my girlfriends. I had to have my grandfather with me or a few of my guy friends. I don't know why but it made sense to her. 🤷
      My entire childhood was consumed w/ missing children cases because she was so afraid I was going to get kidnapped. I wasn't allowed to have my name on anything like all the other girls did my age because then a kidnapper could use it & pretend like he knew me. I was always watched like a hawk & wasn't even allowed to play outside in our yard in the middle of the woods in the middle of nowhere by myself. I mean no one could even see our house let alone see me playing on my swing set. It wasn't until I was about 9 & the boy who lived down the street from us that I rode the bus with started coming over to play that I was allowed outside.
      My point is I'm sure kids have always been abducted at the same rate as they were in the 80's & 90's but thanks to TV, milk cartons, & flyers my generation had it drilled into our heads that the boogie man could be around any corner, never take candy from strangers or even from older kids because it might be laced with drugs, and basically just terrified for our lives that we might me next. It was "Stranger Danger" on steroids. I have 2 boys & I let them know not to wonder off & why & & not to go with strangers & why but I didn't scare them like we were thinking there my be a stranger in the closet, under the bed, or right outside my window at night just waiting to snatch me & run off with me to do unspeakable things. I know they meant well but it just scared the crap outta me & gave me life long trust issues, lol
      Sorry for my little rant. I just remembered how weird it was.

    I remember when he (Michael) went missing. It was heartbreaking. Everyone here in Victoria was praying he would be found safe. I used to walk past that park every day, and felt sad, sick, every time I did. And even now, every time I drive past the park he went missing from I STILL see his little face on Missing posters that were posted literally, everywhere. Michael's Mom and Dad have since divorced, which in my head, if Michael ever came back, how would he find them... irrational thinking I guess... Victoria was a small city...a large town. Quiet, peaceful... And on an island... to leave, you had to get on a ferry, and BC Ferries was on high alert for Michael as well.

    I can't fathom leaving a 4 year old alone in a public place, because besides the fact of child abductors, 4 year olds don't have the cognitive abilities to be left unattended outside. Just strange that she would brush aside a bad gut feeling and let him go. Why not just have him wait for his dad? I was 6 in 91 and I asked my mom if she would do this and she said "hell no!".1991 really wasn't much different from today as far as stranger danger. I know a lot of people suspect the parents but I think she just made a bad decision.

    • @CBeatty59
      @CBeatty59 3 года назад +2

      I was thinking the same thing. Nobody left a 4-year-old alone in a playground in the 60s, much less then 90s. Ridiculous! All so she could attend HER game?? Sorry, when you have kids, they come first, always. Should have waited for the father, and he should have watched his son like a hawk.

      @@michelleprieur1 A lot depends on where you lived and how protective parents were in your community. Anyway, I stand by what I said and others here agree with me. The fact that there were so many people present on the field may actually have helped Michael's abductors, as the mass of people moving to and fro would have made it difficult to notice a small child being led away.

    This case really tugged at me. Prayers for that family, hopefully they will get answers. As someone that works in Law Enforcement I want that for them. They seem like good people that had their world turned upside down. I played flag football when younger, it was fun and totally innocent. Grew up in rural central Illinois can remember my dad who coached little league letting me play at the playground from a young age. This kinda reminds me of the Morgan Nicks case, also decades later unsolved.
