  • Awesome snow out in the Morzine and Avoriaz region of the French Alps on the run up to Christmas 2017.
Shot on a DJI Mavic Pro drone, and a Insta360 One. Both are amazing devices

Going in couple of weeks, what’s Morzine slopes like or is Avoriaz slopes much better?

Well, that depends on a lot of factors really. :-) If you're staying in Morzine you owe it to yourself to explore both sides. As a snowboarder I find Morzine has more traverse runs that can be annoying, especially if you're trying to get to / back from Les Gets. But also some great open and undulating runs that are great to speed down! Avoriaz is what connects Morzine to most of the rest of Portes du Soleil, so if you're looking at exploring more of the domain, e.g. getting across to Switzerland, or the snow park, or the Stash (snow park in the woods) you will have to go to and through Avoriaz. I personally like the runs down from Avoriaz down to Ardent / Lindrets TC, and TK Prodains cable car (the view @ 1:30 in this video is looking down in to the Prodains valley), both are great runs through the woods and pass lots of wonderful places to stop for a vin chaud! If you like some off piste then I can recommend coming down under the Pleney lift in to Morzine, or the run through the woods and down under the Mont Chery lift down in to Les Gets.. both great fun and challenging, especially in fresh powder! They've had so much snow at the start of the season, and since, so you should be set for an amazing time no matter what your skill level. Have a good one!

nice vid. not heard of the Insta till now... does it auto edit out the selfie stick you use ??

pete mings thanks! Yes, it does. Or, more specifically it can't see the selfie stick as it sits underneath the camera, the stitching is good enough it simply appears as if it's not there. All the footage here was "free captured" in to a normal 1080p vid on the Insta360 app on an iPhone. It's amazingly easy and fun to use the camera then reshoot videos like this!

Great video how did you edit this in the app or on the desktop software ?

Thanks Wes. I 'free catptured' all the clips in the Insta360 iPhone app, then edited them together on desktop software (i just find it easier). All recordings are done with just the camera's auto settings... double tap on the camera, and go. Snow is kinda hard to manual adjust for on a camera like this, but with time I could probably have gotten better quality by manually adjusting the camera each time - I kinda like the rawness of it as it is though. As far as I can tell the Insta360 Studio desktop software renders and encodes in better quality, so I'd probably favour using that going forward - for example, it can correct the stitching the two camera images better IMO. That said, there's a lot to be said for "free capture" feature on the phone, it's an amazingly cool experience! Especially having shot footage and not having to worry about framing the shot!

Really liked you film. We’re going again in Feb and hoping the snow gods will be kind. Sparkly trees and empty slopes.

Sounds like you're hooked on the area like me. I've lost count how many times I've been to Morzine. Great village with so many great runs to kick off in to. Feb is normally a great time to go weather-wise.. This vid was in december, and wow did we have it lucky! Perfect conditions, and empty slopes. The year before at this time, iirc, there was literally no snow on some of these runs, but feb should be great. Hope you have a great time - I probably wont get to go this season so I'm jealous! :)
