I espalier a fig as our warmest spot is next to a fence (in New Zealand). It takes a bit of pruning each year (mainly in winter but also a little bit in summer to keep the shape flat) but the production has been very good. We grow it on two horizontal wires which also support grapes.
@14:23 I would trim off that canopy for cuttings and plant the trunk with the small roots into a nice sized pot for the roots to start growing and a new canopy to start forming.
Not on this subject, but Travis, do you recommend buying one of the in ground worm/composters (like the one you have in your raised bed)? Thanks for any insight you can provide. Love love love your channel! Merry Christmas.
I went fig crazy and mulberry crazy and I fear I might be headed into a thornless blackberry situation too. My California Brown Turkey trees make delicious peach flavored figs but they split bad in the humidity for weeks after a hard rain and ripen way too late in Louisiana. Then I saw a cheap 4 pack of "Celeste" and have no idea what I received. The leaves look like Magnolia Figs which is the worst possible variety for Louisiana because they rot in the humidity. So I may have to remove them next year when I (hopefully) see fruits. They may be VDB/Beer`s Black too because they have two types of leaves common with those when young. Do Celeste trees ever have giant leaves with very long thin fingers and shield shaped leaves on the same tree?
Ok, I need some expert advice. I found a 3/16” diameter fig “tree” sprout growing in a sidewalk crack about 7yrs ago. I rescued it, planted it in my yard and it’s been so happy that the trunk is 10”-12” in diameter. Topped it about 5yrs ago and every years I cut all horizontal branches back to anout 3’ from the trunk with no vertical shoots above 5’ from the ground. As soon as it comes out of dormancy, it literally reaches for the sky at 10’-12’ or longer shoots from the shortened branches which also shoot out horizontally. I also have lots of suckers at the base. I remove the suckers, trim all inside branches, and tip all new shoots. The only fruit I get is small starts but nothing useful. The tipped branches just fork and continue to grow as does new suckers! Help!!! What do I do? Should I cut the trunk at ground level and let it “bush”. No videos show a tree! All show a fig “bush”?!
Game changer for pruning larger limbs cleanly has been The Milwaukee 2719-21 M18™ FUEL™ HACKZALL. You can purchase saw blades specifically for pruning.
This past summer was new to me for the farmers market. I'm struggling to keep carrots crisp for more than an hour with/without tops, washed or not washed. So I end up keeping them in a water bath... not the most convenient. Any suggestions, thoughts?
I moved a 1 year old tree in zone 9 (south GA) after Helene. It kept growing without any issues. The leaves fell off, but they were already doing that and new leaves have grown back already.
Now come to Alabama and work on my 20 year old fig that has never been pruned. There's about 137.7 trunks that have to be taken out srarting this year and I'm afraid that I'll kill it if I take too many.
Good morning, sir. hope all is well. Just came across your wonderful video. But I was just wondering if you would be able and capable in donating just a couple of your wonderful and delicious, sweeter figs cutting to a disabled army veteran who lives in Florida. If is within your heart. let me know your comments. Best regards. Have a wonderful Merry Christmas and a blessed new years.

I need to reinstall mine in another bed. I do like them though. Fun for kids too.

I cringed when I saw that chain in the dirt,,, but,,, pruning works,,, sooo,,, good informative video ✅✅✅
Lol so did I, but they sell chain and bar combos everyday
Some mild shovel work could have alleviated most of it. But understood why that route was taken.
I would have used a recipricating saw with a longer blade for sure!

It's tough to do in the summer. When we grew veggies to sell, I only did winter carrots.
Thanks for ur share
Do you put anything on the cuts? To help heal over better?
I don't.
When can I move to a new location ? a one year old fig tree. Zone 9

If it has that many, it has a very robust root structure. You could chainsaw it flush to the ground and it would grow back next spring.

I wonder if you will have to climb a ladder when in the future it gets to tall
Maybe years down the road. But I usually "top" all my trees when they get so tall I can't reach the top with loppers.
Now it's time to sharpen the blade on your chainsaw 😂
