1:30 I notice in almost every video of this railroad that the guy at the railroad crossing rotates his arm before moving way. Does this mean anything?

Great question! That’s our crossing guard. The waving of the arm like that signals to the engineer that the crossing is clear and safe to proceed ahead. That is also why he is looking up the line (in the direction the train is going).

What happens if the crossing is not clear? What does the train do?

It has happened to me before. It is very RARE that the flooded mine crossing is not clear but if the engineer doesn’t get the signal to proceed through the crossing then we have to stop that train. Even if the gates are open, if we don’t get that signal we’re supposed to stop.

@@SirDufferson Thanks I have always wanted to know! Also what would be the most common reason that the train would have to stop at the crossing, and how long does it take for the train to make a full stop. because I notice that the train is going around 10-15 mph when passing the crossing!

It actually doesn’t take long to stop the train there because the train is going up a steep grade.
