This blows my mind, man. Basically, the times we live in and the technology that's exploded are sometimes overwhelmingly poignant, revealing, wonderful. When these two guys were chatting with each other, they happened to be a couple people who were instrumental to my growing awareness of the world. I was a student at Loyola-Marymount, Los Angeles, and Gerald Wilson, besides being such a great bandleader, had an afternoon slot as DJ at one of LA's two jazz radio stations. It felt like I was learning as much from him as from any of my college professors. Gerald would play ALL KINDS of records on the air, and he'd play Jarrett. One day he played a cut or two from Facing You (one of the most beautiful and important solo piano records ever, ever, ever), mentioning that the record wasn't available yet in the states, which it wasn't. But before that, he had mentioned that a quartet was playing that week at the Lighthouse jazz club, with Bill Evans alum Paul Motian and Ornette Coleman alums Dewey Redman and Charlie Haden, and I said, "I gotta go to that!" But I'd never yet heard of the guy on piano, whose quartet it was - Jarrett. When I went and heard them, my life changed utterly. In the past half century, there's never been a bigger impact on my musical awareness. I just get a huge kick out of seeing these two guys chatting in a studio, across town from where I was at the time, fifty years later. I loved Gerald, and Paul, Dewey, Charlie and Keith, and a bit of the gratitude I feel to them can be shared by you for posting this obscure little tidbit.
Thanks for sharing this, I appreciate it. This is why I have saved these old tapes and worked to digitize them, especially Gerald and Jazz Capsule. Now, they blow my mind too.
Keep 'em coming John! If I'm not mistaken, did you at some point send/deliver a cache of Jazz Capsule reel-to-reel tapes to our family? I feel like I recall that you did. If so, I will speak to my sisters so that we can digitize them without delay!
Anthony, so glad you found this. I know I sent Gerald the tapes, not sure what they were. If you would like I could help you digitize them. My email: johnhunt740@yahoo.com I have posted another show, Hampton Hawes on Jazz Capsule. I'm going to pull up Count Basie and Freddie Greene next. Later, John

This is great - thanks for sharing!
Has there ever been an interviewer who could formulate a concise series of questions for the length of the interview?
