City for me brings me nostalgia because I was so blown away by an open world Batman game, and watching video after video of all the details and fun inclusion I missed.
Harley Quinn, the series where all the heroes and villains are popstars and the carnage amongst the civilians is socially tolerated. You know, like real life.
I think my problem with the Harley is that it kinda treats the audience as newbie simpletons up and including “Wow Batgirl isn’t cool? She should get more love” (but won’t) that and just using Harley to introduce the entire DCU.
I feel that with the DC animated movies, particularly the ones not connected to a greater continuity, they aren't the best at visually representing the styles of the comics they're adapting (New Frontier, Gotham by Gaslight, Killing Joke, et cetera). It's sort of an odd mix of half-faithful and half-modern stylization that never commits to one or the other. However, I do like the way Long Halloween was adapted with an entirely different style that merely took inspiration from the original's tone and direction.
Still I would rather individual animated adaptations than say poor adaptation of a great comic within animated universe I don’t particularly care for like Batman Hush. Honestly I wish Marvel would animate some of their best comics like Kraven’s Last Hunt or My Life as a Weapon.

And speaking of popular, it was a pretty successful reboot, and probably would've been much better in the long term if a lot of the launch wasn't super rushed. Still, New 52 was a LOT of people's jumping-on point, creating a huge number of new comic book readers, for which alone I personally wouldn't possibly rank it below a C.

Remember that time you thought Frank Miller was Frank Darabont and you said, "isn't it funny how the Steven King adaptation guy has so many comic books" and everyone stared at you and then started laughing at you and called you a fraud? Not pleasant memory for me to drag back up my bad.
I'll always be a New 52 defender. It made me read more DC than just Batman and Green Lantern. I have the entire New 52 Batman, Flash, Green Lantern, and Aquaman runs. I'd like to the lot eventually. The fact it is a completed 5 year run makes it even nore appealing to me as something to read and collect.
If the DC characters crossed over with Watchmen, how did they react to the Watchmen's universe being half destroyed and being caused by one of their own and most of those guys covering it up?
The DC characters didn't really get to know shit about the Watchmen universe, and pretty much none of the story took place there. Dr. Manhattan went to the DCU after leaving the Watchmen one cause he saw it was full of hope, but a vision he had convinced him that there was gonna be a World War III over metahuman powers, followed by a confrontation between him and Superman, the outcome of which he couldn't see. So he started pulling strings which resulted in the New 52 universe, where a lot of heroes were younger and a lot of dead ones were alive again, cause Manhattan effectively wiped the Justice Society of America (the precursor of the JLA) from existence and took away 10 years from the continuity. Batman and Flash kinda find out about Manhattan through Reverse Flash fucking around, but not really. In Doomsday Clock, Ozymandias tracks down where Manhattan has gone and wants to bring him back to fix the fallout of Rorschach's journal exposing what he did. He goes to the DCU with Rorschach II, Mime and Marionette, the confrontation with Superman does happen, and I won't spoil it (the story's too long for a YT comment anyway), but I liked it, and Geoff Johns didn't try to change up the Watchmen universe too much anyway. He does leave a plot point in the Watchmen universe which could make for an interesting follow-up, though.
It was confirmed that none of the same Justice League actors from the DCEU are coming back for the DCU, so Bats, Supes, WW, Flash, and Aquaman are being recast. I think the new DCU doesn’t deserve the ill will of The Flash’s ending.
The whole thing just leaves a bad taste in the mouth going forward though and I’m not really looking forward to the Son of Batman movie when we haven’t even gotten a decent live action Dick Grayson yet.
@@li-limandragon9287 Shoot, sorry I didn’t see this 2 months ago. With Gunn himself saying the “Batfamily” will be in the DCU, the only other member that’s pretty much guaranteed to appear alongside Damien is Dick Grayson. The new universe is 95% a clean slate, with only Peacemaker, Waller and Blue Beetle being kept (which isn’t too bad because they’re smaller side characters). The DCEU had its highs and lows, but I am SO much more hopeful for Gunn & Safran’s DCU because Gunn’s earned my trust as a reliably high-quality comic book storyteller. The respect they’ve been paying to the comics’ actual creators is very hopeful to me personally. Sorry you’re not as hopeful for it as I am, but I totally get that too. Either way, the projects will hopefully speak for themselves!
Having Batman and Wonder Woman is a plus but they weren’t introduced into the show in full costume to make the no tights Superman even more ridiculous so D++++++++ for me.
It's wild to me that DC essentially made their universe over a decade ago with the DC animated Batman, Superman and Justice League series. And they don't know how to make one in live action lol.
2:54 As someone rewatching the show in 2023, Smallville doesn't really drop off until Season 9 and at that point, it's so close to ending, you can give it a pass.
I am tired of people clowning on the New 52, sure the majority of titles weren't very good, but it had some banger runs that go over looked too often. Aside from mainline Batman, a lot of the Justice League volumes were great, Justice League Dark and Justice League of America were really fun reads, it introduced the most popular incarnation of the Suicide Squad, Earth-2 was a really cool spin on the silver age heroes, and that 1 volume of Shazam was better than both of the recent movies.

I watched all of it and everything after season 1 is great but I understand why you didn't bother considering season 1 has a lot of dull moments
The Bruce Timm Animated works do an evil Superman like 6 times, and twice within the same show.
Lawrence didn't beep out the swearing like you wanted, FIRED!
5:05 wise words Mason
They should really do all the rankin bass Christmas specials now
How do you not mention Mark Hamill when talking about batman animated universe?!?
Remember that time you thought Frank Miller was Frank Darabont and you said, "isn't it funny how the Steven King adaptation guy has so many comic books" and everyone stared at you and then started laughing at you and called you a fraud?
Not pleasant memory for me to drag back up my bad.
You guys have got to check out My Adventures With Superman. A complete delight.
I can’t believe they purposefully left off Doom Patrol just to spite me. Curses!
Awesome. I can't believe James didn't place the *Super Friends* on his list, but lol.
yes the penguin and the riddler are kinda in love on gotham and they're arguably the best characters on the show
jerome was too berfore their swapped him out with jeremiah
god, if they had kept the fact that joker 2 was a musical, that would be one of the greatest movie moments in history
The art and action is pretty damn cool too. Better than Ultimate Marvel imo.
I need a mannequin Christmas movie ranking now
You guys forgot to include my headcanon in the S tier
Just a couple of absolute rankers
The “comics are better than ever” line was a just bit of cheeky humor, right?
Right?
Of course Maso doesn't like Joker. No one's suffered like him because of that movie
Smallville Season 11 comic book definitely bumps it up to an A Tier
Having Batman and Wonder Woman is a plus but they weren’t introduced into the show in full costume to make the no tights Superman even more ridiculous so D++++++++ for me.
I choose to believe that Young Justice is on that final "everything else" S tier entry
Animated justice league and original teen titans are peak DC.
Y'all didn't mention Peacemaker at all, but since the scale only went up to S there wouldn't have been a place for it anyway.
Good video👍 delightful as always
Ranking the exceptional Lego Batman on the same tier as the uneven and flawed Snyderverse? I rate this ranking universe a "C".
James Gunn has said multiple times that DCU starts with Creature Commandos. So, no Flash, no blue beetle, def no aquaman
It's wild to me that DC essentially made their universe over a decade ago with the DC animated Batman, Superman and Justice League series. And they don't know how to make one in live action lol.
I'm now ready for the Watchmen of the Caribbean crossover
5:51 WAIT WHAT🤯 For years I’ve been associating Lynda Carter’s wonder woman with Michael Keaton’s Batman and Christopher Reeve’s superman
2:54 As someone rewatching the show in 2023, Smallville doesn't really drop off until Season 9 and at that point, it's so close to ending, you can give it a pass.
"What if superman, but nice?". My Adventures with Superman.
I hated Ledger's Joker. Always have. I just had to get that out there, I've been holding it in for years
That's a very courageous thing to say. I don't share your opinion, but I salute you for saying it. o7
More great DC universes include the Teen Titans og animated series and the Legion of Superheroes animated series.
Confusing Rebirth with the New 52 and the DCAU and DCAMU really bothered me and I know that’s incredibly stupid of me but it’s true.
To be fair New 52 directly leads into Rebirth.
The Batpod is an escape pod, Maso! Hence the name!
I have not watched, read or played a lot of these universes.
i think most people don’t know joker is gonna be a musical because i didn’t until you said just now
My favorite universes are the DCAU, the Arkham games, Kingdom Come, and Young Justice for seasons 1 and 2
19:53 you say that, and smallville did exactly that. without that, dc tv shows and live action super hero shows would not be around
S is for stuff : love it
Rodney is S tier. How dare you not include him.
Hell yeah 😅👍
