You don't put a driver in the lead that believes he is in the fight for the drivers championship, realistic or not, and expect them to take team orders easily. I don't even know if I can blame Lando for making it so public because most of the radio messages were coming from the engineer and Lando just being quiet and he's done quite well with the questions afterward from what I've seen. • @ThePancaked1
      @ThePancaked1 2 месяца назад +1

      I think ruthlessness has nothing to do with it. If anything he's too shortsighted. He has lost races by extending leads out of pure greed and an odd engineer dynamic, and done questionable overtakes because he doesn't want to wait a corner, like two of the dives on Verstappen in the race where they collided. I think Max would have given more space if Norris hadn't pissed him off with the failed overtakes. The exact thing that happened to Max here in Hungary will happen to Norris if he doesn't get his head straight. Tumbling down the order because he's seeing red. It's obvious which of the drivers has the championship mentality and it's unfortunately not their fastest driver. Being a champion is not about being ruthless 10% of the time, it's about remaining coolheaded 90% of the time. George is a good example because doesn't fumble because he's not tough enough, it's because he loses focus and get frustrated.

Every point counts for him right now to stay in possible contention, and with Red Bull finally showing some severe weaknesses as McLaren is getting more solid, he should be going for it WITH the team behind him! They just as easily could've told this to Piastri that this is the case and that it's part of being in F1! Other teams force driver swaps when they have a driver with a shot at the title, there's zero surprises to that happening. If Stella wants to maintain this team first and all costs attitude, they're going to be losing drivers and finding a difficult time getting good ones.

It appears from what Oscar said post race, that the driver who was ahead at the first lap would get priority. But then McLaren undercut Piastri twice and put Lando in the awkward position of needing to give back the lead to Oscar. Lando ultimately did the right thing but the blame lies with McLaren in how they ordered the late pit stops and not being more forceful on the radio with Lando late on. If Lando had thought it through he would have easily let Oscar through early on and then attacked him as he clearly had the pace but yet again it’s another issue Lando has to sort because he’s not making smart race decisions and too many mistakes in high pressure situations. Max, Lewis and Fernando very rarely if at all make those errors when in positions to win.
      Also his attitude in the cool down room where Lewis praised how fast their car was only for Lando to take it the wrong way with a sarcastic and frankly disrespectful manner shows how much growing up he’s got to do.
      His engineer was right to tell him that he will need his teammate to help him win a title wasn’t blackmail or gaslighting but just stating the obvious to him.

More importantly, there was already a team agreement on the strategy that the lead would be given back in case the scenario played out.
    If he changed position right away, Lando would still have more than twenty laps to fairly prove he was faster than Oscar and wouldn’t have put Oscar in an awkward position. It was pretty clear no matter how Mclaren try to spin this is that they lost control of the situation in the last few laps. The back and forth between Lando and his race engineer just shows that. If they really want to either ask Lando finish first or second, just order them directly through team orders. Get someone that is their equivalent of James Vowles back in Mercedes to show the pitwall is serious about whatever decision they want. Don't go through the yapping of tire wear of both drivers pushing too much or whatnot. It's silly that it even got to a point where Mclaren were basically guilt tripping Lando to give the position back.
    Regardless of whether or not Oscar or Lando should have won, what remains is that Mclaren needs to be clearer with what it wants to do. You can't tell Oscar not to worry about Lando and then have him see his maiden win slip away. You can't have a situation where you undercut a driver with your teammate who is clearly preferred and then beg for that teammate to give the place back. And you can't leave out an issue lap after lap because that just allows tensions to boil over.

Had they done so, Lando would have really had to prove himself on track, likely having to now overtake both Hamilton and Verstappen, instead of being handed the lead via pit stop. They had plenty of advantage over Hamilton and Verstappen to just follow the norm - Give the leading driver (Piastri) preference on the best pit stop strategy. Stop him first, whatever is most advantageous, and then if they meet on track after that, let them race. They stole any chance for Piastri to feel like he truly won the race by deciding the finishing order before the second set of pit stops, and then they made it worse by giving Norris the preferential pit strategy so that he would have to give up the position voluntarily on track. Now both Piastri and Norris will be questioning what the finishing order might have been had they pitted Piastri first and let them race to the finish.

That implies there was an overall team plan already in place before the race that was discussed about how long the drivers would be allowed to fight amongst themselves before the team locked them into place. And Lando pitted on Lap 45. So, based on that earlier message to Lando, his opportunity to fight for the win was done when he pitted.

      @@aethyr6776 I agree. All signs point to McLaren having an internal agreement that the drivers race until a point before being locked. It prevents them from getting too "racy" and crashing on the last few laps and throwing everything away. Lando had pole but he messed up the start and never caught Oscar before his 40ish lap deadline, so he lost the team race. Oscar didn't help by going wide a couple of times and never catching up properly at the end. McLaren didn't help by undercutting Oscar to help Lando to cover Lewis. No one at McLaren really comes away from this looking good.

    Sorry but strategy didn’t give Lando a 6 second lead on older tires, Piastri making mistakes and not being the better driver that day did. Telling your main driver to be slower so your teammate has the chance to pass you and take all the glory is just dumb. Even on the radio at the end it felt like Piastri knew he didn’t deserve the win.

    At this point in the championship those extra 7 points could make the difference in the fight between Max and Lando. The 1-2 was effectively guaranteed, the strategy was played out and you still had a 1-2 and Oscar wasn't catching up. The interest of the team also includes getting Lando a fight for the drivers championship too.

    After pitting Lando first, and then Lando showing a pace advantage and driving away from Oscar, Lando should have just said F-it, I am taking this win. The team screwed up the pit stop strategy, let them handle it with Oscar. If he wants to become a world champion, he needs a bit of ruthlessness.

      It was hardly that. Stella: "A driver without the right amount of team player CANNOT race in Payaya." Does Norris want to be fired like Ocon or not? Norris was given an undercu on Hamilton NOT on Piastri, therefore he was required to promptly reinvert with Piastri. It's very simple. instead he dithered and did not do so promptly.

Lando was burning his tires trying to create a gap to make a statement that he was faster because he didn't want to give back the position that was gifted to him. After the switch, Oscar immediately created a 2-second gap for him because Lando's tires were already cooked. Also, do you know what clear air means? Or dirty air? Whether you believe Lando was being selfish or immature it did have the effect of getting everyone's minds off of their previous screw-ups, thus avoiding an overly nervous choke situation, it also allowed the pair to extend their lead over Lewis.
    Also, his actions cause the McLaren team to evolve beyond just getting their cars home by being a catalyst for growth and change. No one knows if he would have drove across the finish line without a position swap but now at least they have addressed the "What if we have to consolidate the best points haul in order to win a drivers championship" strategy.
