  • Anne Bradstreet was born in Northampton, England, in 1612 and set sail for the New World in 1630. Her poems published in 1650 as The Tenth Muse is considered the first book of original poetry written in colonial America.
Mother of eight children, there is no certain knowledge of her burial place.
Her death occurred on September 16, 1672.
A frontier is no friendly place for literary creation; yet within a year after landing in Massachusetts colonial New England, Anne Bradstreet, America’s first English poet was writing, and the fruits of her pen from the next forty odd years remain for us today.
Most of her Puritan rhymes were verse, elegies, anagrams and paraphrases of scripture; her purpose in writing exemplifies the Puritan ideals in literature: to justify “God’s way to man”.
Her works evidence her piety, filial duty, feminism, and interest in and wide reading of history, natural science and literature.
