Andy, you might be interested to know that the exact same problem would happen on the Nintendo Game Boy from 1989. Eventually someone found that the solution (since obviously you can't get a new LCD for them) is to literally run a soldering iron along those lines to essentially "re-flow" the wires in the ribbon cable and re-establish the electrical connection. You can see someone doing this in a RUclips video with ID "l4PArFarm_k" . I did this on one of my Game Boys years ago and it was a permanent fix (at least, the issue has never since reoccurred). I don't know if the wires are as easily "accessible" on the 857D panel but if my 857D ever has this problem I will definitely be trying that same technique! haha
The issue is the adhesive strip on the film with the flex cable. Its poor design which unglues with heat from setting in hot cars. The same thing used to happen with text display style pagers. The fix is simple. Cut automotive trim tape to cover the black strip which is facing the foam. It pushes the flex strip down for a tight fit and keeps the contacts from pulling away from the glass. Ive had to replace several on my radios. Living in the southwestern US temperatures in the summer can exceed 110 outside, with temperatures inside closed vehicles getting up to 185 degrees. The displays on the FT-857s I have typically last about 3 - 4 years. Its hard to explain the fix but once you understand whats going on, the fix is like a face palm.
Keep making vids like this. Oh instead of using a knife edge, use a pencil erasure, you’ll see what I mean about the flex ribbon.

I have tried wooden sticks, ceramic screwdriver, heating, cooling pressure. The only thing that brings the pixels back is a conducive object small enough to bridge the gap. I believe the conductive trace that is exposed is being etched away. Maybe from chemicals in the foam rubber. Unfortunately I do not have a microscope powerful enough to look at these traces. At some point yaesu will stop making replacements for the 857 like they just did for the 897. Id love to find a solution that does not require replacement but just a repair.

What happens is the adhesive in high heat becomes gummy, then once exposed to air, crystalizes. The only repair would be to remove the adhesive without damaging the flex cable and the very small graphite pad. Unfortunately trying to clean the flex cable destroys the graphite pads. I found that out the hard way. Then you would have to find a way to literally recreate the the adhesive track which would respond to heat/pressure treatment to reseat the flex cable back to the glass and the contacts there.
Yaesu could have actually repaired the issue easily by just adding a proper thickness silicone gasket around the display. Its basically what I am doing. Question Andy, are you good on QRZ? If so shoot me your email address to mine. I am solid on QRZ. 73 de Scotty.
Aha, after chatting in one or another forum / group or what have you, I found your video.
From all the "fixes" I have seen online, a few people here have bits and pieces in my estimation.
1) The sealant becomes conductive over time. This is showing up in a lot of electronics now. It takes time to degrade. Cleaning helps.
2) Due to heat and stress as you say, the connections start to pull away and a light reheat may work. Iron or air...
3) Like my Fluke meter, pressure, so as the one fellow said, putting new, better tape on will help maintain the connections.
On the other hand, who knows what other updates the new one brings.
I have a few questions:
1) Where are you located?
2) How busy are you with repairs?
I ask because while I can usually track issues down, I'm not 100% sure I can do the work anymore, at least on such small SM components.
1) The resistor that acts as a fuse for the TXREQ on the ACC jack is blown.
2) Something went that is preventing any power out on UHF. All other bands are fine. I haven't even started tracking that down. It just recently started.
3) I'm just starting to get zebra stripes now... well, the radio is.

Having worked in the paging industry we replace many Motorola Bravo numerical pager screens. What we had was a special heat bonding tool to refasten the new display to the logic board. Most LCD screens that use a flex are assembled the same way with a heated head that applies a set even pressure and heat to the display to bond the flex to the glass. IF you could create a head that supplied the proper heat and pressure, the display might come back to life.
Heat is the major culprit of the de bonding of the flex from the crystal. Personally I have the same radio, Not the D version. The radio has MARS / CAP mod in it to allow it to work on the European 70cm band as well as the MARS network. It’s also great for listening to SW bands, the only thing that peed me off about that is that there are a constant barrage of Chinese stations out there spewing their propaganda. Gone are many of the classic SW stations, most going to the internet to reach their audience. Gone is the skill of tuning in to the stations as they change frequencies during the various hours of the day.
I have two of these radios on the shelf. Both had lcd problems, one will not work on 40M LSB. I paid Yaesu $250 to get one lcd repaired. This was many years ago.
Seems like way too much money for a radio that is probably not even worth $400.
I was so upset about it, that I really contemplated designing a replacement control head for the unit. I have designed many microprocessor based units in the past.
Color lcd touch screen are so cheap, and ARM32 processors so fast and powerful, that it seems someone would have already done this.
Anyway, why not a CAT module to control the radio in lieu of a radio with a bad screen?
AND !!! You mean know one knows where Yaesu bought these displays from? Not even a ham who used to work for Yaesu?
This trouble was on my Yaesu vr-500. I am solve that. Take a soldering station and with air 140-158C warm strip contacts and after faster doing like you with knife.

Hi, I am facing the same problem (fortunately only in one stripe still), on the 897's display. Do you have any idea, or suggestion, where I can purchase the display for that radio? I am looking literally everywhere in the internet, with no luck. I've been told, that maybe I can find it in the US, in shops that sell damaged radios for spare parts. I got mine straight from Yaesu USA from their parts department. Dont buy just one, I try to buy 2 or 3 when I have to order them. Hope this helps.

I was just notified by Yaesu that they no longer sell the 897 replacement lcds. This is real bad news.

Yes. I have replaced ones that quit working. You will need good tools. Be careful not to handle the lcd too much.
Hi, I have a 857D the screen works fine but I do have some issues with 6m and 2m sensitivity on ssb and sensitivity issues on FM in general, what might be an estimate to have that issue sorted ?

A friend of mine has one. If he sends just the head and you change the electronic assembly and rebuild the vfo encoder, he will retain all his memory settings, correct?

The memory is stored in the radio. Even the lcd color is stored in the radio.

I give a 90 day warranty on all my repairs. You pay for shipping the defective part back to me. I cover repair and shipping back to you. FYI I have been replacing these lcd for 6 years and have had one that failed, the lcd went black, in all that time. I replaced it right away and Yaesu exchanged the bad part to me.

You should avoid the older ones. I bought one new 9 years ago in May 2013;
it’s been in a mobile the whole time. We have winters and hot summers. Haven’t had an issue yet. They made the 857d for about 17 years starting 20 years ago with the non-D version. Based on my experience, I’d say don’t buy one of the older ones with the original displays.
I have had my 857d since 2012 and just now only having issues with it... Its hard to explain but basically on a 12v auto system it said I have 40V and only displayed 7.00000 MHz and became unresponsive. I have not looked into it to see what its issue is yet. Since I generally just use it for digital modes and local repeaters, I bought a FT5DR for the local repeaters and still shopping for another HF radio.
