If you'd like a (somewhat) shorter game, try the secret missions. Each player is given a mission such as "Control Asia and South America" or "Eliminate the Blue player". Whoever completes their secret mission first, reveals it and wins.

Your troops are all the same except for their representative value. Troop = 1 Troop Cavalry = 5 Troops Canon = 10 Troops Cavalry and Cannons don't have any extra abilities or rules. They are purely to save space.

Growing up we always played where you only get three troops plus your continent or cards you trade in. We also played where you if you attack with three dice and the defender has at least three troops you loose three or kill three depending on how the dice roll goes, but partial wins each side looses one. These rule changes speed up the game slightly. Before these changes we would have games lasting days.
Here's another way of cards by the way if some don't like the chaotic "progressive" sets. It rather scale by a "fixed" value, 4 for 3 infantry cards, 6 for 3 cavalry, 8 for 3 artilery and 10 for all three in the set.

They never increase. - one can only fortify from one territory to an immediately adjacent territory (not through connected territories). - white dice are used instead of blue. - the attacker rolls before the defender. - there is no dragon card to remove.

No. They are just used to save space on the board (if required in any territory).
Same as: a 100 dollar note = ten 10 dollar notes.
yes, you will have more infantry for use elsewhere, sometimes you have to merge troops to place your allotted troops.
