DOWNHILL SKATERS Vs LOCAL AUTHORITIES - Gold Coast

The Channel 7 news report about the downhill skateboarding community versus the Gold Coast City Council, differing opinions of speedboarding. Linky's first time on prime time TV with Steve Daddow, a good all round report that focuses on the Councils ineptitude, lack of fore-thought, ignorance and archaic response to the growing sport, here on the Gold Coast. Check out the councillor's lame responses, such as "Where are their parents?" amongst her ongoing thoughtless and un-supportive remarks through various media outlets. What is needed is council support, safer places to train and recreationally skate, alternatives to outlaw events and some funding, and a better attitude from some of the dinosaur councillors. Slowly it seems, it is coming :)

Apparently if the road is rural or under 70km/h you can legally skate. I heard this from another rider so I can't verify it's accuracy though.
Connection road in Currumbin valley is awesome, start at the water tank and head towards tallebudera state school ;)

@0aapo we got brakes pre drift or foot brake and you normaly take to the corner where trafic is not coming towards you ( the side that cars come from behind )

From what I've been told (by my old man haha) technically, if the road is undivided you can skate it legally, you don't have to wear a helmet by law and there is no speed restriction. That's for Canberra though. :/

@gcratepayer I agree totally , funny how the Council holds a big Holiday program and then typical of any level of politics changes tack.
Kinda funny when under the Law a Skateboard is considered a wheel recreational toy and it user a Pedestrian, which opens up a whole can of worms because as a Pedestrian you are NOT subject to any speed restriction and may procede any where that is public access.
I do hope common sense will prevail.

I live and skate downhill in portland, OR and we legally have all the same rights as a bicycle...one of the few places in the world where it's legal to downhill skate.

The bottom line is that they can't find a legal way (yet) to tax (MAKE MONEY) on yet another freedom. Son now they want to outlaw it because what they first thought was a phase caught on, and now they want to capitolize on it. Haven't you people yet learned that's how this world works? It's all about money. Morals are only morals until some politician figures out a way to make money with them, then they become laws.

@gcratepayer well the thing is that you don`t have brakes in longboard. but pepole that think like this don`t realize that almost every longboarder is wise enough to use a spotter in corners where they have risks to crash with a car or bicycle etc, and almost every DH longboarder uses a helmet. as instead many young kids riding bicycles (atleast in finland where i live) don`t give a shit about traffic rules, don`t use a helmet and drive like a freakin` lunatics.
