Brewing Stories - An Oral History of West London Brewery Workers

- This film is an oral history of the people who worked in the three main Thames side breweries in West London. These breweries were major employers - their smoke and smells dominating this part of London for hundreds of years.
The three breweries are the Griffin Brewery (Fuller's) in Chiswick, the Ram Brewery (Young's) in Wandsworth and the Stag Brewery (Watney's) in Mortlake. They employed hundreds of people, many for their whole working lives, with generations working for the same brewery or moving employment between the three. All are essentially factories along the River Thames. The three were competing businesses and together they dominated this stretch of river running from Wandsworth to Mortlake.
The film was made by volunteers as part of a community oral history project supported by digital:works and funded by National Lottery Heritage Fund and Unite the Union.

I don't think a company can have higher praise than their workforce saying that "once I get there, everything will be alright..." Well done. Great documentary.
A sign of a good company when everyone feel happy. Every other company should look at this.

This was great! You can really see the difference between people then and now in terms of work ethic, contentment and ambition. It seems better then from that angle. Health, safety and equality perhaps not so much!
Great to see old brewing friends from Youngs and Fullers talking about the good old days. I can well remember the UK peak brewing year of 1979, exciting times not realising everything was about to go downhill.
Excellent documentary. I really miss enjoying a three-pint lunch of my favourite Fuller's ESB. Things were different back in the 1970s.

I've just finished watching this gem of a documentary after watching all the others on this wonderful channel and I could actually feel the love and respect from the people being interviewed.
It's such a shame that in modern times, this has become a rare feeling between us whilst at work.
Living quite close to Fuller's in Chiswick, it was so nice to see the history.

This brought back so many memories. Mum and dad were licensees so I spent my childhood around barrels and bottles. Really good documentary from you as always.
i used to sell vehicle parts to the garage at Young's in the early eighty's. The workers always had a quart bottle handy they could go to a tap for beer any time they wanted. I remember driving into the yard to find it packed with all the drays nothing was moving ,I found that the reason for the hold up was two ducks from the menagerie had decided to tryst right by the exit barrier and now had a large crowd of spectators waiting for the ducks to get back to the farm. Although I only sold to the brewery when I mentioned that I wanted to buy some large four pint cans to present to a football team in the Nederlands whilst on a trip I was given some by Young's no charge great programme

I lived in Putney as a kid the brewery in Lacey Road and the hippodrome in Felsham road was our playground, so sad when they pulled it down.
I live in Putney and found that the Hippodrome was on the corner of Felsham and Weimar, where there is now a housing estate. Where was the brewery on Lacy Road? I couldn't find anything on that.

I remember fullers of Chiswick from the late 70s, but I don't remember the smell of hops you had to go to park royal for that.
